Jimmy Swaggart: Pioneer televangelist dies aged 90
Jimmy Swaggart - a pioneer of televangelism in the US - has died aged 90. Last month, the American Pentecostal preacher suffered a cardiac arrest at his home in Louisiana and was taken to a local hospital. His death was announced on Tuesday on his public Facebook page, though no cause of death was given. At one point, Mr Swaggart was the most famous TV evangelist in the US - preaching the word of God to millions of followers at home and abroad. But his vast audience dwindled when he was caught on camera with a prostitute in 1988. Mr Swaggart was serving as a co-pastor of the Family Worship Centre in Baton Rouge when he died. He was born in 1935 - and "after a dramatic salvation experience at the age of eight, felt the call of God on his life." According to his website: "He spent hours reading the Bible, praying, and, after a certain revival meeting, decided to ask God for the talent to play the piano." Mr Swaggart's first album, Some Golden Daybreak, was released in 1958. Since then, 17 million recordings have been sold. The Grammy-nominated pastor took up evangelistic work full-time in 1954 and was ordained by the Assemblies of God in 1961. He preached the gospel on TV for longer than any other American evangelist, according to his ministry's website. The Campmeeting Hour, Mr Swaggart's first radio programme, aired in 1969 - and within five years, the show was broadcasting on 700 radio stations in the US. His career in TV started in 1973 with the 30-minute weekly programme, The Jimmy Swaggart Evangelistic Association Presents Jimmy Swaggart, also known as the Jimmy Swaggart telecast. In 2010, Mr Swaggart launched the SonLife Broadcasting Network (SBN), a 24-hour Christian channel. Prostitute scandals He was defrocked by the Assemblies of God in 1988 after pictures surfaced of him with a prostitute. The pictures were handed in by rival TV evangelist Marvin Gorman, who was also defrocked after Mr Swaggart accused him of "immoral dalliances" in 1986. Following the scandal, Mr Swaggart delivered his famous "I have sinned" speech in front of a congregation of 7,000 in Baton Rouge, where he sobbed and asked for his wife's forgiveness, while falling short of detailing what his sin was. Mr Swaggart carried on as an independent Pentecostal preacher - but in 1991, he was found by police in California in the company of another prostitute after being stopped for a traffic violation.

Public viewing Sunday for Cavin Yarbrough, Dallas-born R&B legend and half of iconic duo Yarbrough & Peoples
A public viewing will be held Sunday to honor Cavin Yarbrough, a Dallas native, Grammy-nominated musician and one-half of the R&B duo Yarbrough & Peoples, best known for their 1980s No. 1 hit "Don't Stop the Music." Yarbrough died last week at age 72 from complications related to heart disease. The public lying in state to honor Yarbrough's life and legacy will take place from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Hall of State, State Fair of Texas, 3939 Grand Ave., Dallas. Tributes from loved ones Alisa Peoples, his wife and longtime music partner, described Yarbrough as "the love of my life" and said he is now her "guardian angel." She told CBS News Texas that his death was sudden and unexpected, noting that he had been vibrant the day before and was even making plans for her upcoming birthday. The song topped the Billboard R&B chart, launching the pair into national fame and becoming a defining track of early '80s funk and R&B. Musical roots and early career Yarbrough's musical roots ran deep. He was a classically trained pianist who first crossed paths with Peoples during childhood piano lessons. Their shared passion for music eventually led to a professional partnership. With the support of Gap Band frontman Charlie Wilson, they signed with Total Experience Records. 1980s R&B chart success The duo enjoyed a string of R&B hits throughout the 1980s, including: "Don't Waste Your Time" (1984) "Heartbeats" (1983) "Guilty" (1986) "I Wouldn't Lie" (1986) Life after the spotlight In 1987, a year after leaving the label, Yarbrough and Peoples married and returned to their hometown of Dallas. There, they launched a production company and became music directors at their church, continuing to inspire others through mentorship and community engagement. 30-year-old rock band to headline The Big E Arena on fair's opening night
Southern Rock jam band Gov't Mule will open The Big E's largest stage with a headlining performance on the first night of the fair's 2025 run. Gov't Mule will bring their 'Back in the Saddle Tour' to West Springfield on Friday, Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets and VIP packages to the concert will be made available for public sale starting Friday, June 20, at 10 a.m. through The Big E's website. Tickets bought ahead of the show date include admission to The Big E on the date of the concert.
