Crews tackle three field fires in one day

Fire crews from 19 stations tackled three large field fires in one day across a county. Essex Fire Service said on Friday it attended blazes in Grays, Rayleigh and Witham. Two people have been arrested on suspicion of arson over the fire near Amersham Court, Rayleigh, and remained in custody, Essex Police said. At the time of the incident some roads were temporarily closed in the area and smoke was seen blowing over the A129 and A1245. At 09:53 BST the service was called to reports that 37 acres (15 hectares) of standing crop was alight in Stifford Clays, Grays. At 15:38 it was called to a seven-acre (three hectares) fire on Amersham Court, Rayleigh, where one outbuilding was damaged. Crews were later called to Conrad Road, Witham, at 17:21, to put out a 74-acre (30 hectares) field fire. All three fires were put out, the fire service confirmed. Group manager Marc Diggory said crews in Rayleigh "worked hard to extinguish the fire and stop it from spreading to nearby properties". He confirmed it spread to one outbuilding but no-one was injured. Essex Police said its investigation was "in the early stages". It appealed for anyone with information, CCTV or dashcam footage to come forward. The recent warm weather had increased the risk of wildfires, the fire service said. It asked that people reduce the risk of further incidents by stubbing out cigarettes and disposing of them properly. It also asked people to avoid lighting campfires or barbecues in the countryside. "If you do, make sure they are fully extinguished before you dispose of them," the service said. "Never leave barbecues or bonfires unattended and discard your rubbish, especially glass bottles, responsibly." Follow Essex news on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram and X. Orsett animal sanctuary stuck with a skip full of rubbish

A woman says she has been left with a skip full of rubbish after the company that delivered it to her animal sanctuary went Wood usually rotates skips at her animal sanctuary in Orsett, near Grays, Essex, but one she had delivered in March is still sitting BBC reported earlier this year that more than 200 skips were sitting uncollected across south Essex after Bobs Skips ceased BBC has attempted to contact the business on several occasions but has not had a response. Ms Wood said she still needed skips, so she had to call another company."So now I've got two skips on the land," she told BBC said she had "a bit of a panic attack" when she heard the firm had gone she did not need her skip collected for a few months, and she thought the business would have a new owner by then. "It's full, it's got mixed house household waste in it, it's got lots and lots of empty cans of dog food and cat food in it," she said."I've got a tarpaulin over it to stop foxes getting in and ripping everything up and chucking it all over the place, and it's becoming a little bit of a headache now."I have just been unable to find any information as to who I should phone to get it off my land." Ms Wood has asked her new provider if it could take the skip, but it said it could not."They said they're not allowed to because it's not their property," she the 70-year-old is worried that allowing a third party to take it off her hands could land her in trouble if its owner ever returned to collect it. The Environment Agency said: "We have suspended an environmental permit to manage waste at an address in Harvey Road, in Basildon."Specialist officers are investigating a potential breach of the permit, which was in place to ensure no activity posed a risk to the environment."The Bobs Skips website now redirects visitors to a company called Essex Waste and Demolition Solutions, based in told the BBC it bought the domain recently due to its high rankings in online search engines.
