Four fit players not in this week's squad: Essendon's injury crisis worsens yet again

Loading Essendon will have only four fit players left on their playing list who will not be selected in their squad to take on Greater Western Sydney on Thursday night. Alwyn Davey jnr, and teenagers Kayle Gerreyn, Rhys Unwin and Jayden Nguyen are the only available players not chosen for the Bombers, who lost a further four players to injury in their horror loss to Richmond on Saturday night. A total of 17 players are unavailable for selection, including veteran Todd Goldstein, who has been managed due to a five-day break. Eight of those 17 have been ruled out for the season. The Bombers have been forced to make another six changes, due to the injury crisis which has seen the team reach the point where they are probably the most-depleted side, in terms of sheer number of players, since West Coast were forced to bring in top-up players from state leagues in 2022 due to COVID-19 and other injuries. The Bombers have recalled the seasoned quartet of Dylan Shiel, Archie Perkins, Jade Gresham and Matt Guelfi from the VFL for the GWS game, and have taken the decision to sit out star young forward Nate Caddy and veteran Goldstein, in part because of the five-day break and the need to protect both players, especially the sore Caddy. The Bombers also lost Elijah Tsatas to a hamstring from the widely mocked Tigers game, the teams producing the lowest combined score at the MCG since 1989, despite no adverse weather. They have promoted their 13th debutant of the year, key position player Liam McMahon, originally drafted by Collingwood (2020) and who was one of four players picked up in the mid-year draft by the depleted Dons. Essendon are investigating the injury toll, as a matter of course, and reviewing their conditioning to avoid further carnage, with the injuries a mix of contact or accidents, such as four torn anterior cruciate ligaments – the most demoralising of which was that suffered by Nic Martin on Saturday – and soft tissue issues like those of Kyle Langford (quadriceps), Darcy Parish (calf), Zach Reid (hamstring) and now Ben Hobbs (groin).

West Coast Eagles star Harley Reid fined a whopping $6250 for latest indiscretion against Port Adelaide

West Coast star Harley Reid will have to delve into his savings to pay for his lack of discipline against Port Adelaide on Sunday after being charged for tripping and being fined more money than he was paid to play. The AFL Match Review Officer fined Reid $6250 for tripping Travis Boak during the third quarter. Had it been his first offence, Reid would have been offered a $2000 fine, but because the star Eagle has a lengthy rap sheet, that figure has blown out to $6250. It is the largest fine the Match Review Officer is able to give a player. As a second year player, Reid receives a base payment plus $4000 per game. After taking out tax, his fine is more than he will receive in his pay for the last week. He was also fined $3750 for engaging in rough conduct against Greater Western Sydney last week. Reid has now been cited 13 times throughout his 37-game career. He was suspended for two matches last season and has been fined $26,250, including $15,000 this season. The No.1 draft pick missed out on being paid $4000 for the two games he was suspended last season. That indiscretion also made him ineligible for the AFL Rising Star award which came with large financial bonuses. Reid already receives significant amounts of money through endorsements and is expected to sign a life changing contract when his current deal expires at the end of next season. Clubs throughout Australia are preparing to make huge offers to lure him away from the Eagles. Reid was one of West Coast's best players against the Power and received one vote in the AFL Coaches Association's Champion Player of the Year Award after collecting 27 disposals, six clearances and kicking one goal. But the Victorian also gave away six free kicks, often argued with umpires and was involved in a heated confrontation with Jason Horne-Francis, prompting criticism during the match from Brownlow medallist Mark Ricciuto. 'He's got bucketloads of talent but he's spending so much time worrying about other things other than communicating with his own players or focusing on what he should be doing or how can he help his teammates,' Ricciuto said. 'It's taxing being a midfielder. he's not fit enough to be a gun mid yet. He's going to work on that in the next couple of years. he should channel a bit more effort into the football side of things.' Reid is the first AFL midfielder since teammate Elliot Yeo to concede 50 free kicks in one season. Yeo gave away 53 free kicks from 25 games in 2018. Reid has conceded 52 in 17 matches and still has six matches remaining.

LIVE UPDATES: West Coast Eagles hunt second win as Greater Western Sydney come to Perth

West Coast has made steady progress across the last two months but it's time the young Eagles learnt how to win as Greater Western Sydney come to town. Malakai Champion becomes the eighth debutant as he takes the sub vest while the Eagles will shape up the same as against Collingwood across the ground. The Giants are without Coleman medallist Jesse Hogan and star midfielder Lachie Whitfield, meaning there are no All-Australians on the field tonight. Follow all the action in our live blog. The Giants claimed an 81-point victory in round four when Jesse Hogan peeled off an equal career-high nine goals. However, Hogan will miss tonight's clash alongside Lachie Whitfield who is injured. West Coast look the same across the field tonight with debutant Malakai Champion set to fly from the bench. The Eagles have been able to avoid big smashings lately but they still have just one win. It's a chilly Friday night in Perth but things are about to heat up at Optus Stadium when West Coast host Greater Western Sydney. The Eagles have named an eighth debutant this season with NGA product Malakai Champion to play as the sub after veteran wingman Jayden Hunt was dropped. Now the big question is will the Eagles be able to ride the Orange Tsumani to success or will they wipe out in another defeat? We'll soon find out with bouncedown at 6.20pm.
