Pukekura Park The Purr-Fect Setting For Ross The Cat Video With Help From NPDC Creative Communities Funding

A host of Taranaki tamariki bring two of Ngāmotu New Plymouth's stand-out stars to life in a new short film based on the best-selling local children's book, Ross the Cat, thanks to funding from the NPDC-managed Creative Communities Scheme. The children read the story of Ross and his favourite hang-out, Pukekura Park, highlighting the many attractions at the world-class and multiple Green Flag awarded park, which Ross roams almost every day. "Never work with children and animals – isn't that the saying? Well, following the success of my book Ross the Cat, I decided to create a real-life action version involving local children to narrate the story and of course, including the real-life Ross. The video was professionally shot to showcase the story and Pukekura Park at its best. It is a celebration of young talent in the district, a high-profile feline ambassador and the iconic Pukekura Park,' said author Helen Griffiths. "Creative Communities supported the project that combined community storytelling with children's involvement in the arts. Their enthusiasm and excitement were obvious, and the project culminated in a red-carpet premiere at the Len Lye Cinema, giving the children a taste of film star glamour – no doubt the first of many appearances for some.' The video production received $2,755 from the Creative Communities Scheme. Applications for Creative Communities funding are open until 18 August. Find out more at FAST FACTS The Creative Communities Scheme is a partnership between the government's Creative New Zealand arts agency and councils to promote community involvement, diversity and young people participating in the arts. Each year the NPDC Creative Communities Scheme distributes around $50,000 on behalf of Creative New Zealand to local artists and arts groups. Artists and arts groups can apply for up to $2,500 each round, but larger amounts can be granted for major projects. Last year the scheme helped about 40 artists and arts groups.

Wexford primary school pupils travel to France as efforts continue to protect the environment

The rural school has been recognised for promoting environmental awareness and action. Students took on a number of eco-friendly initiatives over the past school year, including organising beach clean – ups at Ballyhealy Beach and hosting workshops on pollution and coastal erosion, demonstrating a commitment to the local environment. 'We want to make a difference,' said sixth-class student Lily Murphy. 'The beach is a big part of our community, and we're proud to help keep it clean for wildlife and future generations.' And the effort didn't end there. Recently, a group of 22 students and five teachers travelled to France as part of an Erasmus+ programme funded by Leargas. The visit allowed students to share their experiences and exchange ideas with their French peers, who are tackling similar issues. 'This was an incredible opportunity for our students to see that environmental problems are global and that solutions come from teamwork and shared learning,' said Claire Casey, who helped lead the project. In addition to becoming a European Blue School, only the fourth school on the island of Ireland to achieve this prestigious status the school was previously recognised as Wexford's cleanest school by Wexford County Council and has received it's eight Green Flag with marine biodiversity being this year's theme. Principal Micheál Martin said: 'Becoming a Blue School places Kilmore National on the European stage. It's a testament to our students' hard work and their passion for protecting our coasts.' Back at home, the school's Green Schools Committee continues to work with parents, local environmental groups, and Wexford County Council to raise awareness about marine litter and biodiversity.

Betws Park community garden wins Green Flag Community Award

The Friends of Betws Park has earned the Green Flag Community Award from environmental charity Keep Wales Tidy for its work transforming a disused area in Betws Park into a thriving green space. The volunteer group has turned what was once a set of derelict tennis courts into a raised vegetable garden, nature area and wildflower meadow for the community to enjoy. Creating the area has been a source of pride for the volunteers, who find joy in seeing the 'happy young faces of the school pupils and college students, along with members of the community, who are able to stroll through the garden on a visit to the park.'
