LANTERNS Casting Details Reveal Surprising Plans to Explore Hal Jordan's DCU Past — GeekTyrant

DC Studios is making some interesting moves with Lanterns , and the latest casting breakdowns are shedding light on what they are looking to do, especially when it comes to Hal Jordan's backstory. While most fans assumed the spotlight would fall squarely on John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), who will be the DCU's primary Green Lantern, what caught everyone off guard was the decision to cast a 59-year-old Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and a 54-year-old Guy Gardner. That choice implies that these characters have lived full lives in this continuity before we even meet them. And now, thanks to a new report from Nexus Point News, it sounds like Lanterns is going to explore that history. The series has already cast younger and older versions of John Stewart's parents, as well as a child version of John and his brother, which suggests at least one flashback-heavy episode. The same treatment is now being given to Hal. The show is currently casting Hal's parents, Martin and Jessica Jordan, and a child version of Hal himself. According to the report: 'Martin is described as handsome, confident, charming, but hides a deep sadness. Similar to the comics, he's a pilot and hero to young Hal, who he has a very close relationship to. The series is also confirmed to depict the death of Martin Jordan and the influence it has on Hal as a child.' That tragic event has long been a foundational piece of Hal's character in the comics, and it sounds like the show is leaning into it. The site also adds: 'Jessica is described as being emotionless after the death of her husband and she is being cast for a funeral scene. In addition, a child version of Hal is being cast for multiple scenes. He's described as defiant, spirited, brave, and a rule breaker who follows in his father's footsteps.' It's not confirmed if we'll actually see Hal as a young Green Lantern on Oa, but all signs point to both Stewart and Jordan getting well-developed origin arcs in the show. The presence of younger actors and flashback scenarios opens the door to a deeper character dive than we might've expected for a series that was pitched as 'True Detective in space.' There's still plenty of mystery around where Lanterns is headed. Some fans are already speculating Hal Jordan could be killed off or even take a villainous turn as Parallax in the series, but we'll just have to wait and see. Lanterns will follow John Stewart and Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops investigating a murder mystery rooted in Earth. Showrunner Chris Mundy ( True Detective: Night Country ) is joined by Watchmen 's Damon Lindelof and comic writer Tom King ( Supergirl ) on scripting duties. The cast also includes and Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, along with Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones. Lanterns is currently set to premiere in 2026 on HBO and Max.

Review – Absolute Green Lantern #4: The Judgement of Hal Jordan

Absolute Green Lantern #4 cover, via DC Comics. Ray: Of all the Absolute books, this is the one that feels the most like a horror movie – with the mysterious Abin Sur descending on a small town, encasing it in a dome, and seemingly picking off people one by one as part of his 'judgement'. When Guy Gardner was quickly claimed by Abin Sur's mysterious green light, it was a shocker – but nothing compared to what happened last issue, as John Stewart's desperate gambit failed and he was claimed by the light. We know what's happening in the future – as Jo Mullein winds up in command of the first Green Lantern ring on Earth, while Hal winds up possessed by a strange shadow entity calling itself the Darkstar. But we didn't know how we get there. As this issue opens, the town is becoming more and more empty, as the few survivors become increasingly desperate. And so Jo decides to try something no one has – talk to their captor one on one. Haunted. Via DC Comics. One thing Ewing does really well – this is one of the first cases I've seen where an alien actually talks like an alien. Abin Sur's dialogue is often inscrutable, as he describes concepts that we have no way to understand. That works really well at setting a claustrophobic tone – and one that gets only more confusing when he explains that no one is actually dead with a few exceptions, and they're going through some sort of judgement. Is this strange alien specter not actually the villain here? It makes sense – but I'm no closer to understanding his motives than I was before, and I love it. The end of the issue, however, does give us a much more clear-cut villain as we're introduced to one of Hal Jordan's most famous rogues with a very different appearance. This continues to be one of the most intriguing books in the Absolute line, packed with mysteries and scares in the best Al Ewing fashion. To find reviews of all the DC issues, visit DC This Week. Watch: Nicholas Hoult recalls meeting David Corenswet at 'Superman' audition

1 of 4 | Nicholas Hoult arrives on the red carpet at the premiere of Universal Pictures' "Renfield" in 2023. He discussed "Superman" on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" Wednesday. File Photo by John Angelillo/UPI | License Photo June 26 (UPI) -- Nicholas Hoult says he thought David Corenswet would be the "perfect" Superman when they met during auditions for the part. The Mad Max: Fury Road actor, 35, also auditioned for the iconic role but was ultimately cast as Lex Luthor. He discussed what it was like meeting Corenswet, 31, on Jimmy Kimmel Live Wednesday. "I walked around the corner and there was like, lots of shadows on the studio lot and then one ray of sunshine, and David had taken a seat into this ray of sunshine and was sitting there, like charging up from the sun, like Superman does, getting his power," Hoult told Diego Luna, who is guest hosting Kimmel this week. Hoult immediately noticed that Corenswet was taller than he is. "Look at his hair, look at his jawline. And then he started speaking. I shook his hand, and I was like, 'His hands are a bit bigger than me,' and then he spoke and I was like, 'Oh, his voice is a little bit deeper too'... and in that moment, whilst we were shaking hands, I was like, 'I'd be happy if this guy was Superman.' I was like, 'You're perfect for it. Really, genuinely.'" The admiration was mutual. "I've admired Nick as an actor for a long time and to get to meet him, in this context, both dressed as Clark Kent... It was wonderful," Corenswet said. "And then the day that I found out that he had agreed to play Lex Luthor, I thought, 'This may be the best thing that happens to this film because a superhero is only as interesting as their villain.'" DC Entertainment's upcoming Superman film is directed by Guardians of the Galaxy's James Gunn and stars Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Nathan Fillion (Green Lantern), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl) and Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific). Superman lands in theaters July 11.

Review – Green Lantern #24: Prison Blues

Green Lantern #24 cover, via DC Comics. Ray: This book continues to be wildly entertaining – even as it's essentially turned into two books in one as it heads towards the 'Starbreaker Supremacy' crossover event. This issue finds Hal Jordan on Earth, as he and Carol Ferris grow closer now that she's embraced being a superhero too. This is a similar story to the one being told with Superman and Lois over in Josh Williamson's book, but they have more than enough unique elements. Where this one excels is the banter – but there's also a really interesting action plot here, as a Coast City prison has undergone an odd transformation into a happy Stepford-like location – all thanks to a mysterious axolotl that might be tied to the emotional spectrum. There are some things even more creepy than a place where everyone is miserable, and a place where everyone is happy no matter what might just hit that sweet spot. Lockdown. Via DC Comics. Meanwhile, things are distinctly less sunny for the space crew, as Kyle Rayner leads his crew of Superboy, Odyssey, and new recruit Dan Garrett. But they're not in control of their ship anymore – it seems to be pulled toward a strange destination, one that's branded with the symbol of the Green Lantern Corps. This storyline has had an odd creepy edge to it, as this motley crew follows the trail of bizarre anomalies tied to the Starbreaker mythos and discovers some strange and horrific things. And that includes Manhunters this issue – the most infamous and destructive enemies in the history of the Green Lantern Corps. But there's a big twist in the final page of the issue, bringing in a character who I never expected to make their debut in the main comics but will be VERY welcome to Green Lantern fans. This is another book that shows DC's commitment right now to embracing its history in every way. To find reviews of all the DC issues, visit DC This Week. Review – Green Lantern Dark #5: Castle of the Bat

Green Lantern Dark #5 cover, via DC Comics. Ray: This continues to be one of the most intriguing new Elseworlds in a while, not just for its characters and worldbuilding but for its stunning art style. 'Something Is Killing the Children' artist Werther Dell'Edera is very comfortable with working with cosmic horrors, so it's not a surprise that he manages to bring some truly terrifying creatures to life. This issue begins with a depiction of an ancient worm from beyond time and space that's coming for Earth – and it feels like something out of Lovecraftian myth in the best way. This is all the doing of the Witch Queen Demona, the main villain of the series – who is in thrall to the beast and is trying to feed him enough human energy to welcome him to Earth. And she's not just your standard mad sorcerer – she's the heir to Morgana Le Fay, as well as the daughter of one of the most unlikely heroes still hanging around the Tangent Universe. The world eater. Via DC Comics. That would be the Batwraith (not Batman anymore, interestingly), a cursed knight who betrayed Camelot and is now inhabiting a suit of armor. He's one of many characters who shares their dark story this issue, as the survivors led by Green Lantern make their way towards Demona's twisted and predatory town. An odd little found family has formed out of this group, and even Green Lantern herself is starting to warm up. This is the first time we see how the original Green Lantern wound up passing on her power and her curse to the new heroine – and what it does to the person. There's a very optimistic message at the end about how all burdens need to be carried, but not all need to be carried alone. With one issue left, I believe, this is setting up a compelling final showdown, and one where the world feels genuinely filled with haunted horrors around every corner.
