Ireland come from behind to down Czech Republic in Euro Hockey II opener

Ireland put in a big third quarter performance to come from behind and beat Czech Republic 5-3 in their EuroHockey Championship II opener in Portugal. A brace of goals each from Johnny McKee and Lee Cole, with Matthew Nelson nabbing the other, gave Ireland the victory after the Czechs had led by two goals twice in the match. After a bright start, Czech Republic scored goals in the first and second quarter before Johnny McKee got Ireland off the mark after great build-up play by Daragh Walsh. Czech Republic restored their two-goal advantage early in the third quarter but Ireland responded well as McKee scored his second shortly afterwards. McKee was busy as he earned Ireland a penalty which Lee Cole scored to draw the sides level, and the Green Machine were ahead for the first time when Matthew Nelson flicked home Sean Murray's pass. Another Lee Cole penalty pushed the gap to two with Ireland looking more likely to add a sixth than concede a fourth in the closing moments. Ireland will be back in action against Italy on Tuesday before concluding their Pool A campaign the following day against hosts Portugal, with the top two sides earning a place in Friday's semi-finals.

On Old Boys' day, a new breed of Raiders are creating their own legacy

Loading In front of a packed home crowd, Canberra celebrated Old Boys' day. In years to come, the locals may well gather to celebrate the feats of this generation of Raiders. The Green Machine posted an eighth consecutive win, a 40-16 victory against a plucky Parramatta, to remain at the top of the NRL ladder. After coming back from a half-time deficit, Ricky Stuart's men ran away with it to win their 13th game from their last 14 starts. The minor premiership is theirs to lose. It appeared Canberra would do it in a canter after racing out to a 12-0 lead after eight minutes, and the final scoreline suggests it was just that. However, the Eels scored three tries in the opening stanza to threaten a monumental upset. The visitors produced some slick football in front of a stunned crowd that included the axed Dylan Brown. However, they again faded badly against a Raiders outfit that piled on three tries in the final eight minutes. Jed Stuart and Owen Pattie finished with doubles, the main beneficiaries after the hosts finished with 64 per cent possession in the second half. A victory is the result of dozens of pivotal moments. Whether it was Kaeo Weekes somehow holding up Josh Addo-Carr over the tryline or Corey Horsburgh freeing his right arm and getting away an audacious flick pass, the Raiders produced the majority of them. Once they gained momentum for a second time, there was no stopping them. There were moments when Ethan Strange resembled the great Laurie Daley, as the current mob paid homage to previous generations of the Green Machine. When the pivot pounced on a kick ahead at the death from Jed Stuart, GIO Stadium erupted.

Darts player who Michael van Gerwen called 'pub' standard responds to apology

Michael van Gerwen branded Pero Ljubic a 'pub player' after beating him in the first round of the Polish Darts Masters before issuing an apology to the Croatian Michael van Gerwen has issued an apology to the darts rival he branded a 'pub player'. After narrowly winning 6-4 against Pero Ljubic in an underwhelming performance at the Polish Darts Masters, the triple world champion did not mince words when commenting on the Croatian's ability. Van Gerwen, who recently split from wife Daphne, was well short of his best, but Ljubic, 47, couldn't take advantage as he exited the tournament at the first hurdle. The Green Machine derided both his own performance and the state of Ljubic's game. ‌ "It wasn't a good game at all. Pero needs to be happy that he won one leg. Pero is not a good player. Pero is a pub player, we all know that," said Van Gerwen, who was defeated in the quarter-finals by Rob Cross. ‌ "I'm not harsh. He is a lovely man but when you throw treble 12 for treble 20 then you need to go back to the dartboard [to practice]. I'm the one to blame. But I made Pero look good today. Pero won a few legs and it feels like his birthday!" Van Gerwen, who has gone two years without winning a major tournament and failed to reach the Premier League play-offs, faced a backlash from fans for his brutal remarks. However, he has since issued an apology to Ljubic, who was unruffled by the comments, attributing MVG's reaction to discontent with his own performance. ‌ The 'Croatian Knight', as Pero is known, considers any issue with MVG water under the bridge. Per Oche 180, Pero said: "Michael and I have known each other for a long time. We like to have a laugh. There was no bad intention behind his words. "He was just frustrated with his own performance, and I understand that. To be honest, Michael apologised to me straight away. As I said, we know each other well, and I know he meant no harm. In fact, during a later chat, he even gave me some motivation. "He's a genuinely decent guy and a top-class player, so don't judge him too harshly. Emotions can run high in those moments. For me, what matters most is someone's honesty, not what the internet says. ‌ "As I mentioned, he regretted his words, and he apologised. That's enough for me. Once again, don't be too quick to judge. Emotions can take over in moments like that." After withdrawing from this weekend's Baltic Sea Darts Open in Germany, Van Gerwen is now preparing for the World Matchplay in Blackpool, which begins on Saturday, July 19. He has been handed a blockbuster first-round clash against fellow Dutch icon Raymond van Barneveld, who only just qualified for the prestigious major via his standing in the ProTour Order of Merit. One big name will be missing after 2023 world champion Michael Smith failed to qualify either via the world rankings or the ProTour order of Merit.
