Nelipak starts construction on new healthcare packaging plant in Costa Rica

Healthcare packaging solutions provider Nelipak has initiated construction of a new facility in Costa Rica's Green Valley, Grecia, Alajuela. The 60,000ft² industrial facility is being developed in partnership with Costa Rican real-estate developer Portafolio Inmobiliario. The facility, which is expected to open in mid-2026, will substantially increase Nelipak's capacity and capabilities in the region. It will expand production capabilities to include thin- and heavy-gauge thermoforming, die-cut pouch cards, and inserts. The site will boast International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 13485 certification and include ISO-7 clean room manufacturing space, adhering to the highest standards for sterile-barrier healthcare packaging. Nelipak CEO Pat Chambliss expressed excitement about the construction commencement, emphasising the company's dedication to its South American and Caribbean customers. "This investment underscores our long-term commitment to our customers in Latin America and the Caribbean, and reflects our strategy to provide global excellence with strong local support," said Chambliss. Costa Rica Minister of Foreign Trade Manuel Tovar lauded Nelipak's expansion as a testament to the company's confidence in Costa Rica as a strategic platform for its specialised packaging solutions in the life sciences packaging sector. "We congratulate Nelipak for its commitment to innovation, the creation of quality employment, and the promotion of sustainable growth for the benefit of our country and the region," Tovar remarked. Since acquiring ATE in 2012, Nelipak has been operating in Costa Rica, supplying medical device manufacturers with custom packaging products. The new facility will provide additional warehousing and distribution space, allowing for future growth in line with customer demands. Nelipak said the new plant reinforces Costa Rica's status as a prime location for medical device manufacturing and underscores its role as a key player in the global healthcare supply chain. Nelipak employs 1,400 people across 11 sites globally, comprising six sites in North America and five sites in Europe. Earlier this year, Nelipak said it would invest in the future of sterile-barrier medical packaging in the Asia-Pacific egion, with an intention to extend its capabilities to meet increasing customer requirements. Chinese Firm Halts Production of Controversial Alzheimer's Drug

(Bloomberg) -- A Chinese company that developed the country's first indigenous therapy for Alzheimer's disease has suspended production and sales of the drug, casting doubts on the treatment's future. The drug's license has expired and its renewal is now in the final stages of a regulatory review, during which it must stop commercial production and sales, Green Valley Pharmaceutical Co. said in an emailed statement to Bloomberg News on Tuesday. The Shanghai-based drugmaker informed employees of the production halt in an internal notice at the end of May, local media Yicai reported first on Monday. Green Valley's drug — a seaweed-derived compound known as sodium oligomannate, or GV-971 — was hailed as a major advance when China's drug regulator gave it conditional approval in 2019, as the first new therapy endorsed for Alzheimer's in 17 years. Local and international medical experts have since questioned how effective it really is in slowing or reversing the cognitive declines of Alzheimer's patients given the relatively short duration of — and the inconsistent results shown in — its late-stage clinical trial in China. The company launched a global clinical trial in 2020, seeking to enroll some 2,000 patients across China, the US and Europe. It was terminated two years later due to a lack of funding and Covid pandemic disruptions. Green Valley previously conducted post-marketing clinical studies on around 3,300 patients on sodium oligomannate in China and has planned to present the results at an international academic conference later this year, according to the company. The changes are temporary and limited to operations related to sodium oligomannate, the company said, adding that drug supply for clinical trials is unaffected. 'We are in close communications with relevant authorities and believe patients' treatment needs will be met soon,' it said in the email. The closely-held company has not disclosed sales revenue for GV-971 in China, where it was included for national insurance reimbursement in 2022 at a price of around $41 per box. Hospital and retail sales of GV-971 topped $45.4 million (326 million yuan) that year, Yicai reported, citing figures from Pharnexcloud — a database of national hospital sales in China. China has since approved two new Alzheimer's therapies developed by multinational drugmakers: Biogen Inc. and Eisai Co.'s Leqembi, and Kisunla from Eli Lilly & Co. The country has 17 million dementia patients — about 30% of the global total — per a 2024 report led by Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. More stories like this are available on

Green Valley receives licence to launch smart electric passenger transport in Egypt

Egypt's Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, Kamel Al-Wazir, witnessed the signing of a licensing agreement granting Green Valley Electric Vehicle Services Company the right to operate passenger transport services using electric vehicles and advanced information technology systems. The license, issued by the Land Transport Regulatory Authority, is part of Egypt's broader strategy to support the transition to green transportation and promote sustainable mobility solutions. Al-Wazir emphasized that the initiative aligns with national efforts to reduce carbon emissions and modernize transport infrastructure through clean energy and digital innovation. The project's first phase will see Green Valley roll out a fleet of 100 electric vehicles in Cairo and Giza. This marks the beginning of a larger plan to gradually expand the company's operations across multiple governorates. Al-Wazir affirmed that the project plays a vital role in promoting environmentally responsible transport, while also reinforcing Egypt's industrial strategy to become a regional hub for advanced technologies. He reiterated the state's commitment to fostering international cooperation in key sectors, particularly transportation and manufacturing, and stressed the importance of localizing the electric vehicle and charger industries. The minister described this sector as a promising area for investment and a priority within Egypt's industrial development agenda under the directives of President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi. Riad Salem, Chairperson of Green Valley, confirmed that the company is also exploring partnerships to localize the manufacturing of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure in Egypt. He stated that Green Valley aims to offer a modern and secure smart mobility experience through its integrated transport services platform, JTNY. The JTNY application enables passengers to book rides, track their journeys in real time, and make cashless payments. On the driver side, it supports disciplined service delivery and seamless communication with operations centres. An intelligent monitoring system ensures continuous oversight of service quality and performance, supported by a robust digital infrastructure and a network of main charging stations distributed throughout Cairo and Giza to ensure consistent operation and service reliability. Salem added that Green Valley places a strong emphasis on service quality and professionalism. Driver candidates undergo a rigorous, multi-stage selection process, followed by regular assessments in both driving performance and customer service to ensure full compliance with the company's standards. © 2024 Daily News Egypt.
