600 mangrove trees planted along Sejingkat coastline in conservation effort

Participants pose after planting the 600 mangrove trees. KUCHING (July 6): A total of 600 mangrove trees were planted along the Sejingkat Power Station's coastline yesterday in conjunction with the month of International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem. The initiative, jointly undertaken by the state Forest Department and Sarawak Energy Berhad's (SEB) subsidiary, Sejingkat Power Corporation, is part of the ongoing partnership between the two parties. 'Since the collaboration in 2022, a cumulative total of almost 3,000 mangrove trees has been planted along the Sejingkat coastline, demonstrating a shared commitment to coastal conservation and environmental sustainability,' said the department in a statement. The planting programme also aligns with SEB's Sarawak Energy Tree Planting, Protection and Habitat Restoration Campaign 2021-2030, in support of the Greening Sarawak Campaign led by the department. Adopted by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) in 2015, the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem is celebrated on July 26 every year. The observance aims to raise awareness of the importance of mangrove ecosystems as 'a unique, special and vulnerable ecosystem' and to promote solutions for their sustainable management, conservation and use. As the authority responsible for the management, conservation and sustainable development of Sarawak's forest resources, the department said it will continue to play a key role in protecting coastal ecosystems. 'Through collaborative efforts such as this, we aim to safeguard biodiversity, combat erosion and strengthen the resilience of natural habitats against climate change,' said the department. coastline lead mangrove trees planted Sejingkat Power Station

A Sarawak Forest Department personnel conducts a tree-planting demonstration to a group of students KUCHING (May 26): Approximately 700 native tree saplings were planted during a tree planting programme held at the Sabal Forest Reserve in Simunjan last Saturday, as part of the 'Greening Sarawak' campaign. The initiative was led by the Sarawak Forest Department in collaboration with the Japan Malaysia Association (JMA), and sponsored by the Kinoshita Group through JMA. 'The initiative saw the planting of 700 native tree saplings comprising Kapur Bukit and Bintangor Laut species, contributing to ongoing efforts to restore degraded forest areas and enhance biodiversity in Sarawak,' said the department in a statement. More than 100 participants including department staff, volunteers from JMA, teachers and students from SMK Balai Ringin, lecturers and students from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), and members of the local community contributed to the programme's success. The department highlighted that the event demonstrated a strong spirit of collaboration among government agencies, educational institutions, non-governmental organisations, and international partners. 'This is also part of Sarawak's broader commitment under the Greening Sarawak Campaign, a significant step toward building a more sustainable and climate-resilient future,' it added. greening activities Sarawak Forest Department tree planting
