National EMS Week educates public, celebrates first response efforts
GREENVILLE, N.C (WNCT) — It's National EMS Week and first responders across the community are educating the public about the services they provide and the passion they have to keep people safe.
Greenville Fire and Rescue crews said the week emphasizes how no matter the circumstance, crews will be there for you the moment 9-1-1 is called.
Last year, Greenville Fire and Rescue crews responded to 21,000 calls and, on average, respond to 60 calls a day. Crew members like Chief Jesse Harris are proud of the work done across the board.
'It's important that we recognize that the kind of thing for this year is we care for everyone,' Harris said. 'And that's really the heart of what we do that no matter who the person is, when they call 9-1-1, we're going to answer it. We're going to respond. We're going to provide what they need regardless of things like insurance or ability to pay or anything, regardless of who you are, we're there for you.'
Throughout the week, there are specific themes for specific days. Tuesday's theme reminds the public that people should steer right or left on the road if it is safe enough to do so in order for an emergency response vehicle to travel to a scene quickly and efficiently.
