Tigers Pursuing Trade For Pair Of Star Pitchers From AL Club, Per Report
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Detroit Tigers have already shocked the world this season. After a solid year last season and a very productive offseason, Detroit has put itself atop the league as one of the best teams. The Tigers surged into the All-Star break with the best record in baseball despite not having the star power that the other top teams have. Even with all this success, the Tigers need to be aggressive at the trade deadline. Detroit could use a few bullpen arms to add alongside Tommy Kahnle and Will Vest at the back end of games, and a trade would be the best way to find the new arms. USA Today's Bob Nightengale recently reported the Tigers were showing strong interest in a trade to acquire Minnesota Twins relievers Griffin Jax and/or Jhoan Duran ahead of the trade deadline. MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - JULY 13: Jhoan Duran #59 of the Minnesota Twins delivers a pitch against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the ninth inning at Target Field on July 13, 2025 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Pirates... The Pirates defeated the Twins 2-1. More"The Philadelphia Phillies have been extensively scouting Minnesota Twins relievers Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax of the Minnesota Twins, hoping to acquire at least one of them," Nightengale wrote. "The Twins also are drawing strong interest from the Detroit Tigers, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Cincinnati Reds." The Tigers' biggest roster hole is in their bullpen. If they can patch this hole with two star pitchers like Jax and Duran, there's a chance they're looked at as World Series favorites down the stretch. To make this idea even better, the Tigers are one of the only teams in baseball with the prospect capital available to make a deal like this happen. Detroit's system is loaded from top to bottom. Trading some of these prospects for two solid pitchers won't hurt the future of the franchise. More MLB: Red Sox Starter 'Will Be Sacrificed' Following $200 Million Alex Bregman Update

Phillies Reportedly Scouting Twins Relievers Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax
Phillies Reportedly Scouting Twins Relievers Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax originally appeared on Athlon Sports. There's no bigger need for the Philadelphia Phillies at the MLB trade deadline than a reliever. Jordan Romano has struggled, Jose Alvarado has been suspended and the rest of the bullpen has been shaky. Advertisement The Phillies are looking especially closely at the American League Central to address the need. They've been linked to Cleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase, and more recently, the Phillies are reportedly scouting a pair of Minnesota Twins relievers. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Phillies are targeting Minnesota's Griffin Jax and Jhoan Duran, and hope to land one or both of those relievers at the trade deadline. "The Philadelphia Phillies have been extensively scouting Minnesota Twins relievers Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax," Nightengale writes, "hoping to acquire at least one of them." Either would be a nice pickup, with both relievers under team control through the 2027 season. Of the two, Duran is the most intriguing. Advertisement Duran (27) is younger than Jax (30) and has been having a better season than his teammate. Through 43 appearances, Duran has a 1.49 ERA, a 5-3 record and 15 saves. Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob ThomsonCharles LeClaire-Imagn Images Across Duran's 42.1 innings pitched, he has 47 strikeouts, 16 walks and a 1.087 WHIP, and he has yet to give up a home run. Duran also has a career-high 284 ERA+ this season, yet he isn't an All-Star. He's easily one of the top options for the Phillies at the deadline, but if he proves too expensive or challenging to land, Jax could be a nice fallback option. In 2024, Jax was one of the best relievers in the game. He had a 2.03 ERA in 71 innings pitched with 95 strikeouts and 15 walks. Advertisement This season has been a bit different. Through his 40.1 innings pitched, Jax has a 4.02 ERA, 65 strikeouts and 10 walks. Last season, he had an ERA+ of 207, but in 2025, his ERA+ is at 105, barely above league average. His struggles would seemingly make him more available than Duran, but if the Phillies could get him back to 2024 form, they'd have a strong reliever in their bullpen. Twins may be open for business on pair of relievers
If the Twins fall further, they might listen on star closer Jhoan Duran and setup man Griffin Jax. As a team for sale, finances may be affecting things. Meantime, Byron Buxton said he wouldn't consider waiving his no-trade anywhere, even for his hometown Braves. 'I'm a Twin,' said Buxton, who cited loyalty shown by the Twins organization and fans despite his extensive injury history. Sources suggest the Rangers are a very unlikely seller. 'Former players don't sell,' opined one rival exec regarding Rangers honcho Chris Young, the ex-pitcher. That means Jacob deGrom isn't going anywhere.

Tigers 'strongly interested' in pair of Twins righty relievers
Ahead of the MLB trade deadline, the Detroit Tigers have a few areas they are planning to address. A third baseman is of interest, as is a starting pitcher. But, one of the more pressing needs for Detroit is in the bullpen. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Tigers are one of many teams that are interested in Minnesota Twins relievers Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax. While it'd be a rare in-division deal, the Tigers could pull such a move off if they want either of the two. Advertisement "The Philadelphia Phillies have been extensively scouting Minnesota Twins relievers Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax..." Nightengale writes, "The Twins are also drawing strong interest from the Detroit Tigers, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Cincinnati Reds." Duran and Jax are the Twins' top relievers, and with both potentially available, either would be a nice pickup for the Tigers' bullpen. Both are under team control through 2027, and both are righties. While the Tigers could use a lefty to pair with right-handers Will Vest and Tommy Kahnle, it wouldn't exclude the Tigers from landing a strong righty reliever. If the righty ended up as either Duran or Jax, it'd be a nice move. MORE: Tigers linked to former Yankees $90 million infielder as depth piece Advertisement This season, Duran has a 1.49 ERA, 47 strikeouts and 16 walks, with no home runs allowed, across 42.1 innings pitched. Jax, meanwhile, has a 4.02 ERA with 65 strikeouts and 10 walks across 40.1 innings pitched. While Duran has been better this season, in 2024, Jax was better. He had a 2.03 ERA and 95 strikeouts, and 15 walks in 71 innings pitched. Duran has a 3.64 ERA, 66 strikeouts, and 15 walks in 54.1 innings pitched. Both Twins relievers had a strong and decent season over the last two years. Either the 27-year-old Duran or the 30-year-old Jax would be nice acquisitions if the Tigers can pull it off. This report from Nightengale suggests the Tigers are strongly interested in Twins' relievers John Duran and Griffin Jax. While an in-division deal might be hard to pull off, the Tigers are still keeping the door open to landing one of the Twins' relievers at the deadline. Advertisement MORE MLB NEWS:

Phillies 'Hoping To Acquire' Star Relief Pitcher From Struggling AL Club
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Philadelphia Phillies are one of the best teams in baseball, but they still need to hunt for some major upgrades ahead of the trade deadline. The biggest hole on the Phillies' roster is in the bullpen following Jose Alvarado's crushing suspension. Alvarado was dealt an 80-game suspension that'll also see him ineligible for the postseason following a failed drug test for PEDs. Luckily for Philadelphia, the trade block is set to have quite a few talented relievers available this year. Bob Nightengale of USA Today recently reported the Phillies were hoping to acquire at least one of Griffin Jax or Jhoan Duran from the Minnesota Twins. ST LOUIS, MO - MARCH 27: Jhoan Duran #59, Justin Topa #48 and Griffin Jax #22 of the Minnesota Twins look on prior to the game against the St. Louis Cardinals on March 27, 2025... ST LOUIS, MO - MARCH 27: Jhoan Duran #59, Justin Topa #48 and Griffin Jax #22 of the Minnesota Twins look on prior to the game against the St. Louis Cardinals on March 27, 2025 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri. More Brace Hemmelgarn/"The Philadelphia Phillies have been extensively scouting Minnesota Twins relievers Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax of the Minnesota Twins, hoping to acquire at least one of them," Nightengale wrote. "The Twins also are drawing strong interest from the Detroit Tigers, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Cincinnati Reds." It would make sense for the struggling Twins to trade both of these relievers this year. For the Phillies, it would come down to how much prospect capital they're willing to part with to land the reliever they want. If Philadelphia is willing to trade a huge haul, it could secure Duran. Duran is one of the more talented relievers in baseball and has team control on his contract through the 2027 season. Jax is nearly as talented, but his trade value should be much less than Duran's. The Phillies could try to swing a monster trade to acquire both pitchers from the Twins if they're willing to put together a blockbuster prospect return.
