How LGBTQIA+ creatives are reclaiming heteronormative spaces

For Navin Noronha, everything is grist for a joke — from his mother asking his vegan boyfriend how he got his 'protein', to sarcastic observations on how cool things historically happened to gay people, be it Grinder or HIV. And if it's insensitive, he isn't sorry. His lived reality is one where queerphobic humour is pervasive. 'For the longest time [and even today], jokes at the expense of the queer community have not only been accepted by the masses, but are also encouraged by them,' says the Mumbai-based comic. A decade into his comedy career, he is one of the few openly queer comics in India. 'Straight comics have long gotten away with the mockery of transgender and queer people. Yet, it's still controversial to tell jokes about political leaders or the government, or talk about queer sex on stage, without becoming a target,' says Noronha, 33. So, in a crowd of comics who comfortably talk about their heterosexual relationships, he is not trying to be a 'queer comic' — just someone who can speak as freely about his life as anyone else. In heteronormative spaces across the country, queer creatives are reclaiming their identities with flair and resilience. Despite a global resurgence of regressive policies impacting LGBTQIA+ individuals — from the U.S. administration's DEI pullback, which is having a ripple effect in India, to the country's denial of same-sex unions and adoption rights — a wave of queer artists, comedians, musicians, filmmakers, and authors have been telling their stories with hopes of a better tomorrow. This surge is propelled by a desire to reclaim spaces, create community, and use art as a powerful tool for activism and self-representation, especially in a post-Section 377 landscape where legal recognition for the community is still evolving. 'It is most important to tell our stories in times like these than at any other,' says filmmaker and writer Jaydeep Sarkar, 44. Outside the checkboxes of pink-washing and capitalistic ideas of queerness, he believes people need to not only look at queer stories but look at the world through a queer lens. 'The more we [the world] tend to return to a heteronormative framework of living, thanks to the powers that be, the more powerful our [queer] stories have to become,' adds Sarkar, who walks the talk with his reality show Rainbow Rishta and campaigns with national dailies that aim to integrate queer identities into the mainstream. Challenging the status quo Society may be becoming more aware and accepting of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities, but it's not enough. Filmmaker Kris has been frequenting the Bangalore Queer Film Festival for the last 17 years, but has never seen a lesbian love story with a happy ending. 'Often, I saw gay men having a lot of fun on screen — sexually liberated and proud.' This led her to want to tell a sapphic story that celebrated afab (assigned female at birth) identities without inhibitions. 'I rallied my friend, film director Mujeer Pasha, to teach me how to write the film I wanted to see,' says Kris, 37. Her desire birthed Kris' debut feature, Nisha, currently in post-production. The film focuses on chosen family — the only place of support and community for many queer individuals who are not accepted by their blood relatives — without a tragic conclusion in sight. 'We are seeing a lot of queer art being shown, institutionally and when it comes to collecting. Even in photography, a harder medium to explore queer themes with. For example, the Chennai Photo Biennale had Sunil Gupta's retrospective, and Rajiv Menon showing queer work across Los Angeles and India. But gallerists still need some convincing. I remember explaining male portraiture to a gallerist for a show I curated for Goa-based artist Alok Johri, and asking her to imagine it as still life, but of human beings.'Jaiveer JohalChennai-based art curator and founder of Avtar Foundation of The Arts Similarly, Vivek Tejuja, 43, wrote So Now You Know: Growing Up Gay in India because he did not see authentic queer stories spotlighted while growing up. The 2019 book went on to define the coming-of-age queer experience in India. 'I feel like there are voices [now], but the publishing world needs to look beyond Pride month and promote queer stories throughout the year,' says the Mumbaikar. In Bengaluru, poet and musician Rumi Harish aims to do this, too. A trans man, he has found queerness adding value to his practice of Hindustani music. 'Concepts of gender, caste, class and body have always been a point of exploration for me. And cis-het people have gatekept many parts of our culture that have always had space for queer identities,' says Harish, sharing how there are ragas such as Miyan ki Todi and works by Sufi musician Amir Khusro, with same-sex intimacy, that people have conveniently ignored — and he is bringing back. 'Singing my khayals [a form of Hindustani known for its melodic improvisation], alternating between the roles of Krishna and Radha, allows me to play with gender without asserting one or the other identity to the audience.' Harish is now building a small but strong community of queer people who have started exploring their own journeys with classical music. Being different in the mainstream As Mumbai-based trans actor and social media influencer Trinetra Haldar Gummaraju says, 'The arts have always benefited from queer ideas, work and labour. But it has never been ready to welcome us in positions of power or visibility, especially in post-colonial rule.' The 28-year-old's character Meher in the Amazon Prime series Made in Heaven has probably been the most genuine representation of a transwoman in mainstream media, yet she says it is still difficult to navigate an entertainment industry that would readily offer queer roles to straight or cisgender actors. 'I have been very fortunate to transition young, and be in the right place at the right time, but that is not the reality for most trans people in the country.' And she is pushing the narrative in her new show, Kankhajura, based on Magpie by Adam Bizanski, a rural thriller revolving around a group of childhood friends. 'The idea of queerness is still depicted as this urban, elite concept. That's just not the case,' says Gummaraju, whose roles have been widely talked about — starting a conversation on why non-tokenistic representation is so important for young queer folx growing up in uncertain times, with extreme political upheaval all around them. Advocating in diverse fields Move away from the arts, and one could argue the challenges grow. But it's not without its success stories. Radio jockey Priyanka Divaakar joined the industry around 15 years ago when 'nobody was talking about transgender issues, let alone a trans person'. Her show in Kannada — on CR Radio Active, a community channel for marginal groups — helped her enter the Limca Book of Records as India's first trans radio jockey. 'In the beginning, the audience criticised my show. They said I sounded like a man, and people would run away when I would try to interview them,' she recalls. Divaakar worked on her voice modulation and won over her listeners with her steadfast focus on highlighting grassroots stories that extend beyond queerness. Over her career, she has established herself as a voice for the LGBTQIA+ community. 'There are more platforms today, but trans people are still denied work day in and day out. How many transgender and intersex people do you see in any given corporate space? Probably none. I want to see that change and shift,' she says. 'Once people are around us for long enough, they tend to get comfortable and we become less of this scary thing that is somehow challenging your structure of man, woman, straight, gay.' Behind the tattoo gun Simranh Kakkar, a tattoo artist based in Bengaluru, thinks that many creative spaces can be quite encouraging of queer identities. But not her field. 'Tattoo studios in India can be jarring and hostile spaces for women and queer people, not just for artists but also for clients,' she shares. 'If you look at history, most traditional tattoo artists were women. But this inherently female art form has been reinterpreted as this masculine art practice.' Most studios are still hesitant to hire a woman, let alone queer artists. 'I am lucky to have found other queer artists now, who see the art of tattooing as this meaningful and powerful tool and not something that stands for aggression, or unchecked power,' says Kakkar, whose bold, vibrant hand-poked designs are made to flow with the body and depict strength through an intrinsic softness. In hospitality, chef Priyank Asha Sukanand, a Cordon Bleu alumnus, has faced similar challenges. 'I have seen how kitchens uphold cis-het ideals of authority, success and communication. As a queer person, I have had to do more than find space — I have had to create it,' says Sukanand, 32. Today, he works at the intersection of hospitality and education, and has created a cooking space that is not toxic, but joyful. He is encouraging more trans and underprivileged people to get access to professional cooking, and is focusing on techniques that keep neurodivergence in mind. 'With my work, I want to make room for complexity and contradiction, to create intersectional third spaces that put respect first,' says Sukanand. For all these professionals, creative or otherwise, sticking by their queer sensibilities means disrupting systems that reward only certain kinds of narratives. And the disruption has never been more important than in this age of supposed progress where the resurgence of right-wing ideologies globally is actively dehumanising queer lives. Let's highlight the need for Pride — beyond just the vibrant celebrations and ubiquitous rainbow flags. Queering spaces is about the community, but it is also about liberating everyone who doesn't want to live life like it's a rigid performance of gender and sexuality. Family of teenage girl allegedly tortured and murdered by man she met on Grindr sues app

The family of a Florida teenager who was allegedly tortured, murdered and dismembered by a man she met on Grindr has filed a lawsuit, claiming the girl would still be alive if she had never met the man on the dating app. Miranda Corsette, 16, met Steven Gress, 35, on the app on February 14. Gress and his girlfriend, Michelle Brandes, 37, allegedly held the teen against her will inside Gress' St. Petersburg home before killing her. Corsette suffocated to death after the couple allegedly shoved a billiard ball in her mouth and wrapped her head in plastic before chopping her up and stuffing her body parts in the trunk of their car. Months later, a representative of Corsette's estate filed a lawsuit against Grindr, alleging that the features of the app and lack of safeguards for minors contributed to the girl's death. 'Without Grindr, we believe that Miranda would have never met this Steven Gress character, and she'd still be alive,' Attorney Lorne Kaiser said. 'This was a completely foreseeable event. Grinder has been warned for years and years about children and minors getting on this platform, and it's obviously a dangerous platform for children.' It was alleged that Gress was able to target Corsette through the app because of its 'lax age verification and hyper-precise geolocation.' 'The trauma inflicted upon M.C. (Miranda) and the irreparable harm to her family are direct consequences of Grindr's reckless disregard for the safety of minor children who are routinely preyed upon by adult predators who use Grindr's platform and design as a trap,' the suit states. According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, Gress and the teen first hung out at the couple's St. Petersburg home on February 14. He drove her home, and then she returned the next day. Gress told detectives that he was told she was 21 but later learned she was 16, according to an arrest affidavit. It wasn't long before Gress accused her of stealing his ring, which sparked the weeklong abuse and torture, the warrant states. As Gress allegedly continued to torture Corsette in their home, his girlfriend reportedly found the missing ring in Gress's car. Police said there is no evidence Corsette took the ring. The torture ended on February 23 when Brandes allegedly shoved a billiard ball into the teen's mouth and wrapped her head in plastic, a witness said. Gress reportedly told her not to cover her nose, but Brandes did, the witness said, and Corsette suffocated. After she was killed, Gress allegedly put her body in a car and drove to a house in Largo, where police say Gress used a chainsaw to dismember her body. They put the remains in trash bags and tossed them into a dumpster, and police later learned that the contents went to the county's incinerator. The new lawsuit claims the LGBTQ+ dating app failed to implement safeguards to prevent minors like Corsette from using it. 'Long before February 14, 2025, it was clear to Grindr that it was only a matter of time before its app, as Grindr marketed it and designed it, would cause the torture, rape, and murder of a child,' the lawsuit states. According to the suit, the app only requires a self-reported birthdate to confirm users are at least 18, with no cross-checking against official documentation or third-party verification at sign-up. The lawsuit claims the teen's murder 'exposes the platform's gross negligence in relying on a farcical self-reported age verification system. This performative gesture, as absurd as a bar or strip club asking teenagers to state their age without checking ID, allowed a minor to access an adult-oriented platform with foreseeable catastrophic consequences.' It's also claimed that the app's geolocation services 'deliver hyper-precise, real-time geolocation tracking — accurate to within a few feet — designed to facilitate immediate sexual encounters. As such, Grindr arranges user profiles based on their distance from other users for instant and spontaneous sexual hookups creating a uniquely hazardous environment for minors.' Corsette's family member is seeking $750,000 and is asking the court to order Grindr to implement more robust age verification measures, like government-issued identification verification or facial age estimation system, and to stop what the suit claims are misleading claims about the app's safety. Grindr LLC has not yet filed a response to the suit, according to Gress and Brandes are facing first-degree murder charges for Corsette's death and are being held at the Pinellas County Jail without bond. Prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty in the case.

Grindr CEO talks app's new telehealth service, evolving user base

Dating app Grindr (GRND) missed first quarter earnings estimates while raising its full-year revenue guidance this week. Grindr CEO George Arison sits down with Josh Lipton to speak about more about the platform's print, Grindr's evolving demographic, and its expansion to a telehealth service called Woodwork. To watch more expert insights and analysis on the latest market action, check out more Asking for a Trend here. Grinder reporting first quarter earnings yesterday, missing on revenue, but raising its full-year guidance, and here to break down that report is Grinder CEO George Arison. George, it is great to see you. So let's talk about this quarter, George. So you did report first quarter revenue. Looks like it missed expectations there, though you raised your forecast for full year revenue growth, it looks like, and adjusted EBITDA margins. So so what are you seeing in the business, George? What gave you the confidence to raise those financial targets? Yeah, thanks for having me. We had a really awesome quarter in Q1. Uh, results were really strong. We grew 25%. EBITDA was over 43%. So really happy with how the quarter went. Um, we don't guide on a quarter by quarter basis. We only guide for the full year because I don't think you should be managing a business um, by quarter, um, but rather for the long term. Uh, and we had been testing a bunch of things in Q1 that were meant to help us drive revenue this year, and some of those results came in pretty strong. So that that helped us raise guidance up by two percentage points. Uh, and additionally, um, we recently started to release our new product called right now to a lot more people. Uh, we launched it to about 15 US cities in March and are adding more um, over the next few weeks and starting to monetize that product a little bit more than we had expected. We had initially planned to monetize it in 2026, but we're going to start doing that in 2025. So that also helped with the raise and in guidance. And George, you know, investors have a lot of questions about the consumer right now, their health, their resilience, George. You have an interesting line of sight there. How does the consumer look to you? Yeah, I get asked this question all the time and I have, I don't have a good answer because uh we actually have not really experienced any negative impact from any economic challenges with our users uh at all. Now there are some differences with our users. They come to Grinder for fun, joyful experiences, not for economic issues or for politics. And even if things are bad, um they still need that outlay of doing something fun and enjoyable. Um and so from that perspective, I think we're pretty protected. Uh and then secondly, our, you know, generally speaking, gay and by men, which is like the overwhelming majority of Grindr users, are um more protected, I think, even in a bad economic environment. Um they generally have high disposable income, probably more savings, um more graduate degrees, etc. So I think even if the economy goes badly, they'll be generally protected. So we have no view into anything negative right now. Things are going really well with our user base. That that's interesting, George. So I was going to ask you who is the Grinder demo in terms, George, of broadly age and income and whether that has sort of, you know, evolved over time, George. It certainly has evolved. Um vast majority of Grindr users are gay and bi men. Um I think if you were to go to Grindr in 2009 or 2010 when it first launched and when I was using it a lot more because I was not a married dad at that point, um we had a lot more um just gay men versus today where we have a lot more bi men as well. I think that's one of the biggest shifts over the last decade is people being much more comfortable saying that they're bi. And so a higher percentage of our users are saying that they're bi. But we still are fundamentally a product for gay and bi men. That's what we target and that's what we know really well. From the age demographics, Grindr has been very successful at getting younger people post them turning 18, because we are an 18 and only app, to come into Grindr and become users. Um that's probably because when you first come out and go to college or finish college, being around older gay men is something you want as well, because you kind of learn what it's like to be gay from them. Um and so I think that's probably driven allows us to kind of bring in the 18 plus cohort as they become of age into the app. And then secondly, we are a community. Like that's probably the biggest place to find other people like you um in the world for any single gay individual. And so being part of that community is is really critical for a lot of people. And I think that helps us with younger users as well. We probably do have some opportunity in being able to keep our users longer in the app as they get older, right? So they kind of reach that 35 or 40-year-old cohort. We probably don't get as much engagement from them as um we would want. Uh partly because we don't do as good of a job in dating features um versus more immediacy features. And so one of the big things we're working through now, and that's probably more for 2026 versus 2025 in terms of when it comes into market, is features that will help our users with finding their long-term partners. One of the things we're learning about our demographic is that a lot more of the people in our cohort want to be in a monogamous relationship over the long term versus used to be the case 10 or 20 years ago. And so we need to help them find their partners um as they seek them. And George, let's talk about what's new at Grindr too. Tell me about woodwork, which I guess, George, is this new telehealth service. Walk me through it. Yep. So Woodwork is a completely new new thing that we launched. It's uh we are building what we call the gayborhood in your pocket, um where we offer a lot of the, we can offer a lot of the things that happen in the gayborhood to everybody on their phones. Um and this is our first gayborhood expansion opportunity that kind of takes us out of the core dating and social connections set of products that we've offered before into something new. Um we are starting out with an ED medication that you can buy um from us in partnership with our partner called Open Loop. Um and so far it's only available in two locations. Um we very much think of woodwork as a startup inside Grindr. So think of something as like zero to one. It's an angel round funded company at this point. Um and so we're not really going to be giving a lot of updates on woodwork in the immediate term while the business kind of learns what it should do and how to do it best, because we do want to give them the time to do that. But I think it's a huge opportunity. You know, 30% of users on Grindr have used ED medications. Um 60% have told us that they've concerned them. And so from that point of view, offering ED medications and later on other additional products that are kind of tangential to that um is a huge opportunity for us. And obviously, our whole concept is we use Grindr, the app, as a primary distribution engine for the woodwork brand, and that would drive, you know, CAC significantly down because we wouldn't be spending all this money on advertising. And then it's also a product built by gay people for gay people. So if you go to you'll see that the branding is very different than everybody else. And that's also I think something our users would very much appreciate. George, it is always good to see you and to have you on the show. Thank you for joining us. Thank you very much. I really appreciate it.
