Jaren Jackson needs procedure — one day after agreeing to $240M Grizzlies contract extension
Jaren Jackson Jr. will need to have a procedure to repair an injury to his right foot, the Grizzlies announced on Tuesday, less than 24 hours after it was reported that he agreed to a five-year, $240 million extension. Jackson, 25, sustained a turf toe injury in his right foot while playing in a 'live basketball run' away from the Grizzlies' facility, the team said in a release. An evaluation on Monday revealed that it would require a procedure to repair it. Advertisement 'An update and preliminary timeline will be provided following the procedure, but Jackson Jr. is expected to make a full recovery,' the Grizzlies said. Jackson is a crucial part of the Grizzlies' roster, and losing him for any period of time will likely hurt Memphis, which is already planning on starting the 2025-26 season without Zach Edey after he underwent a procedure on his left ankle. He will be one of the franchise's leaders — along with Ja Morant — going forward. Jackson had averaged 22.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.2 steals per game last season and has made two NBA All-Star appearances in his seven seasons with the Grizzlies, who drafted him with the fourth overall pick in 2018. ESPN's Shams Charania broke the news of Jackson's newly renegotiated and extended contract on Monday evening. The Grizzlies are coming off a 2024-25 season in which they went 48-34 for a second-place finish in the Southwest Division before getting swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Thunder.

Advertisement Morant joined Lift, an agency headed by former NBA forward Mike Miller, in April 2024. "All indications are that the relationship between the Grizzlies and Morant remains strong," Cole wrote. "Morant could look to partner with another agency that best represents his goals. Another option for the Grizzlies star is self-representation." Morant will make $39.4 million next season, $42.2 million in 2026-27 and $44.8 million in 2027-28, the final year of his contract. Morant is eligible to sign a two-year extension this offseason. It's unknown if the Grizzlies will sign their best player to another lucrative contract. Grizzlies tab Tuomas Iisalo as head coach
The Memphis Grizzlies made Tuomas Iisalo's stay behind the bench a permanent one by naming him the Grizzlies' head coach on Friday. "I have full confidence in Tuomas serving as head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies going forward," general manager Zach Kleiman said in a statement. "Tuomas' teams at every level have been disciplined, tenacious and connected on both ends of the floor, consistently exceeding expectations. We look forward to the same in Memphis." The Grizzlies fired head coach Taylor Jenkins on March 28 despite the club's 44-29 record at the time and named Iisalo interim head coach. Under Iisalo, the Grizzlies went 4-5, finishing 48-34 in the regular season and making the playoffs via the play-in tournament before being swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round. Iisalo, 42, joined the Grizzlies as an assistant under Jenkins ahead of this past season. He was coming off a stint as the head coach of Paris Basketball in 2024, when he was named EuroCup Coach of the Year in his native Finland. The hire makes him the first NBA coach born in Finland. Iisalo, who had a 14-year professional playing career in Finland, has big shoes to fill. Jenkins, 40, is the winningest coach in Grizzlies' franchise history with a 250-214 record with three playoff appearances since being hired in June 2019. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2023 - All Rights Reserved
