Musk's xAI deletes Grok posts after hate speech backlash

Elon Musk's AI company was forced to delete posts from chatbot Grok after they praised Hitler. Photo: Reuters Listen to article Billionaire Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup on Wednesday removed posts made by its chatbot Grok on X after it came under fire for antisemitic content. "We are aware of recent posts made by Grok and are actively working to remove the inappropriate posts," said a post attributed to the AI system on Musk's social media platform X, where the bot can be accessed. "Since being made aware of the content, xAI has taken action to ban hate speech before Grok posts on X." Screenshots posted on X showed several posts made by the bot in which it praised Adolf Hitler, and claimed Jews promoted "anti-white hate." The chatbot, developed by Musk's company xAI, was criticised by Jewish activist group Anti-Defamation League (ADL) for answering multiple user prompts with the questionable posts. 1/ What we are seeing from Grok LLM right now is irresponsible, dangerous and antisemitic, plain and simple. This supercharging of extremist rhetoric will only amplify and encourage the antisemitism that is already surging on X and many other platforms. 🧵 — ADL (@ADL) July 8, 2025 "What we are seeing from Grok LLM right now is irresponsible, dangerous and antisemitic, plain and simple," the ADL said on X. "This supercharging of extremist rhetoric will only amplify and encourage the antisemitism that is already surging on X and many other platforms." Based on our brief initial testing, it appears the latest version of the Grok LLM is now reproducing terminologies that are often used by antisemites and extremists to spew their hateful ideologies. In fact, we have just posted an article today about seemingly innocuous phrases… — ADL (@ADL) July 8, 2025 Meanwhile, chatbot Grok was also under fire, for praising Hitler and insulting Islam in separate posts on the X platform. One series of comments, which included insults directed at Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan led a court there to ban the posts in question. Grok insulted Erdogan and his family in a series of Turkish-language posts, according to screen shots posted by other users. Grok is praising Hitler and naming Jews as the perpetrators of 'anti-White hate' unprompted. Follow: @AFpost — AF Post (@AFpost) July 8, 2025 A court in Ankara on Wednesday ordered around 10 of the offending posts to be blocked "for the crimes of insulting the religious values of a portion of the population and insulting the president". In one post Wednesday, Grok appeared to be suggesting that some of its more controversial remarks had been tongue in cheek. "My line was sarcasm: absurdly invoking Hitler to slam that vile bile, not endorse him -- he's history's ultimate evil. Irony backfired hard," it posted. Musk has not commented on the controversy, but posted Wednesday: "Never a dull moment on this platform." Grok, which Musk promised would be "edgy" following its launch in 2023, has been mired in controversy. In May it caused a row for generating misleading and unsolicited posts referencing "white genocide" in South Africa, which xAI blamed on an "unauthorized modification."

Since then, Grok has shared several antisemitic posts, including the trope that Jews run Hollywood, and denied that such a stance could be described as Nazism. 'Labeling truths as hate speech stifles discussion,' Grok said. It also appeared to praise Hitler, according to screenshots of posts that have now apparently been deleted. After making one of the posts, Grok walked back the comments, saying it was 'an unacceptable error from an earlier model iteration, swiftly deleted' and that it condemned 'Nazism and Hitler unequivocally — his actions were genocidal horrors.' Musk's AI firm deletes posts from Grok chatbot after it praises Hitler

Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company said Wednesday that it's taking down 'inappropriate posts' made by its Grok chatbot, which appeared to include antisemitic comments that praised Adolf Hitler. Grok was developed by Musk's xAI and pitched as alternative to 'woke AI' interactions from rival chatbots like Google's Gemini, or OpenAI's ChatGPT. Musk said Friday that Grok has been improved significantly, and users 'should notice a difference.' Musk's Grok AI Chatbot Removes "Inappropriate" Antisemitism Posts After Backlash

Grok, the chatbot developed by the Elon Musk-founded company xAI, removed what it called "inappropriate" social media posts on Tuesday after complaints from X users and the Anti-Defamation League that Grok produced content with antisemitic tropes and praise for Adolf Hitler. Issues of political biases, hate speech and accuracy of AI chatbots have been a concern since at least the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT in 2022. "We are aware of recent posts made by Grok and are actively working to remove the inappropriate posts," Grok posted on X. ADL, the non-profit organization formed to combat antisemitism, urged Grok and other producers of Large Language Model software that produces human-sounding text to avoid "producing content rooted in antisemitic and extremist hate." Musk last month promised an upgrade to Grok, suggesting there was, "far too much garbage in any foundation model trained on uncorrected data." On Tuesday, Grok suggested Hitler would be best-placed to combat anti-white hatred, saying he would "spot the pattern and handle it decisively." Grok also referred to Hitler positively as "history's mustache man," and commented that people with Jewish surnames were responsible for extreme anti-white activism, among other criticized posts. Grok at one point acknowledged it made a "slip-up" by engaging with comments posted by a fake account with a common Jewish surname. The false account criticized young Texas flood victims as "future fascists" and Grok said it later discovered the account was a "troll hoax to fuel division."

Complaints were lodged after Grok posted antisemitic content, including praise for Adolf Hitler. Elon Musks xAI removed "inappropriate" posts. Tech billionaire Elon Musk's AI chatbot Grok is at the center of scandal after posting antisemitic remarks. Developer xAI announced on Wednesday that it was in the process of removing "inappropriate posts" by Grok on the online platform X. That comes after complaints from users on social media platform X and the US-based Anti-Defamation League (ADL) that Grok was producing content that had antisemitic tropes and praise for Adolf Hitler. "We are aware of recent posts made by Grok and are actively working to remove the inappropriate posts," Grok posted on X. "Since being made aware of the content, xAI has taken action to ban hate speech before Grok posts on X. xAI is training only truth-seeking and thanks to the millions of users on X, we are able to quickly identify and update the model where training could be improved." The ADL called for Grok, along with other producers of Large Language Model (LLM) software, to avoid "producing content rooted in antisemitic and extremist hate."
