Not Even Ben Rappaport Knows What's Coming on ‘Grosse Pointe Garden Society' — and That's What ‘Excites' Him (Exclusive)
Not Even Ben Rappaport Knows What's Coming on 'Grosse Pointe Garden Society' — and That's What 'Excites' Him (Exclusive) originally appeared on Parade. Grosse Pointe Garden Society may have concluded its first season on NBC, but fans of the TV drama are still left with questions — even star Ben Rappaport is looking for answers! 'We were really building suspense,' the 39-year-old actor, who plays Brett, a divorced father who works as a manager of a gardening store in Grosse Pointe, Mich., exclusively tells Parade. Without spilling too many beans for those still wanting to stream the show on Peacock, Grosse Pointe Garden Society follows four members of a suburban garden club who find themselves caught up in a murder they're trying to conceal. 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 Throughout the season, the big question on everybody's mind was: Who is the dead body? 'We didn't know who the body was until later on in the season,' Rappaport reveals. 'Jenna [Bans] and Bill [Krebs], our showrunners, wouldn't tell us. So it was a mystery for us, too. There is something fun about playing when you don't know what it is. Each [cast member], I think internally, decided who it was for ourselves, so it created interesting reactions.' As fans await to hear if the show will be renewed for a second season, Grosse Pointe Garden Society ended on a big cliffhanger when the finale aired last month. Flashing forward to Halloween, viewers see Brett, Birdie (Melissa Fumero) and Catherine (Aja Naomi King) confronting someone in a duck costume who is tied to a chair. With the person's identity unknown, fans — and even the show's stars — are dying to quack the case. Related: 'It's between two people, for me, who I think it is. We don't know,' Rappaport insists. 'I won't say who, but I'm cool with one of those two.' 'I'm someone who just really enjoys the surprise aspect of it all,' adds the actor, who is excited to see what's in store for Brett if Grosse Pointe comes back for more. 'Brett is a divorced dad of two, and you see throughout the season, he's in this really interesting dynamic with his ex-wife, who is now with the guy that she cheated on him with,' he says. 'Throughout the season, you see Brett kind of step up and stand up for himself in ways that he wasn't before. He was sort of like this put-upon guy at the beginning and not quite sure what to do. Throughout the season, you see him really take ownership. And I'd like to keep seeing him do that. He's really evolved a ton throughout the first season. At the end of Season 1, they have this massive secret that they have to keep, and it's going to make things really hard. I want to see him get creative in how he manages keeping this secret.' Now that his days with the gardening club are temporarily on pause now that Season 1 has wrapped, Rappaport is going back to his theater roots as he travels to London to reunite with friend Sean Hayes in the play Good Night, Oscar. Related: 'Sean has become a very good friend of mine, and we have a very special bond, especially on stage,' says Rappaport, who plays talk show host Jack Paar opposite Hayes' portrayal of pianist and humorist Oscar Levant. The two starred in the play when it made its premiere in 2022 at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago and reprised their performances on Broadway. On July 31, it will begin performances at the Barbican Centre in London's West End. Rappaport, who is making his West End debut with the production, is looking forward to getting back on stage with Hayes, whom he calls his 'showbiz older brother.' After all, the Will & Grace alum has provided Rappaport with some sound advice as he juggles multiple projects both on stage and TV. 'His advice in show business in general is it's all about planting a million different little seeds and watering each one little by little as you go, in terms of having multiple projects going on at the same time,' Rappaport explains. 'At one point, one of them is going to bloom, and then the other one still growing. And you just keep watering. So it's kind of this idea of not getting too hyper-focused on one thing. 'He's really inspired me… I'm also writing a script right now, and sometimes I tend to get laser-focused on what I'm doing and what's in front of me at the moment, but he's really of inspired me to be a bit more of a creative multitasker.' All episodes of Grosse Pointe Garden Society are streaming now on Peacock, and Good Night, Oscar is currently scheduled to play through Sept. 21 in London. Fans furious as new drama series is canceled after CLIFFHANGER finale
One of the most popular new dramas on NBC has been canceled after just one season. Despite earning praise from fans and critics, Grosse Pointe Garden Society has been axed. According to Deadline, NBCUniversal executives considered continuing the series exclusively on Peacock, where it had started charting in the streamer's top 10. However, the move would've 'required financial resources from Peacock that had not been allocated' and audience projections weren't high enough to justify it. The cancellation has enraged fans as the season one finale featured a major cliffhanger that was presumably set to be resolved in an expected second season. 'Oh come on. This was actually good. You guys didn't give it a chance changing the night and whatnot. Boo @nbc @peacock,' commented one. '@NBC is the like Netflix. Cancel shows without giving them time to build an audience. Glad I cancelled @peacock,' wrote another. 'Not surprised but I was hoping they would give it a chance,' wrote a third. Set in the upscale Detroit suburb of Grosse Pointe, Michigan, the show centers around four members of a local garden club whose lives begin to unravel after they become entangled in a murder at their club. To cover their tracks, they bury the body in their garden and destroy key evidence, all while juggling their own personal secrets and dramas. The series also time hops, showing the group before the murder and then afterwards to show how the scandal has affected their lives and friendships. The first season concluded with a cryptic Halloween scene: Birdie, Brett, and Catherine confront a person in a duck costume, but their identity isn't revealed. Grosse Pointe Garden Society stars AnnaSophia Robb, Ben Rappaport, and Melissa Fumero. There's been a number of major TV cancellations in recent weeks. HGTV just axed Farmhouse Fixer, Bargain Block, Married to Real Estate, and Izzy Does It in a shocking cancellation spree. Nickelodeon's The Tiny Chef Show also just got the axe. The animated series follows the life of Tiny Chef (voice by Matt Hutchinson), who speaks his very own language, creating a selection of tasty dishes in his tree stump. Last month, The Wheel of Time was canceled after three seasons at Amazon Prime. No reason was given for canceling the series starring Rosamund Pike and Barney Harris, however, Deadline reported that it was likely financial reasons. The series is based on the novels of the same name by Robert Jordan.

Grosse Pointe Garden Society Cancelled at NBC After One Season
Grosse Pointe Garden Society has been uprooted: NBC has cancelled the murder mystery drama after one season, TVLine has confirmed. The news comes after NBC opted to relocate the series following its first three episodes; it switched from Sundays at 10/9c to Fridays at 8 pm. More from TVLine Farmhouse Fixer Cancelled at HGTV, Host Jonathan Knight Says: 'Still Processing the Reasons' Mariska Hargitay Thinks Benson and Stabler Should Get Together in SVU's Last Episode - Respectfully? Nope. Casting News: Chicago Fire Adds On Call's Brandon Larracuente, Shane Gillis to Host ESPYS and More Grosse Pointe Garden Society Season 1 averaged just 1.77 million total viewers (with delayed playback). Out of the 11 dramas that NBC has aired this past TV season, it ranked… dead last, distantly trailing even the similarly cancelled Suits LA (which averaged 2.2 mil). The dramedy, which hailed from Jenna Bans (Desperate Housewives, Scandal, Good Girls) and Bill Krebs (No Tomorrow, Good Girls), followed four suburban gardeners: Birdie (played by Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Melissa Fumero), Catherine (Lessons in Chemistry's Aja Naomi King), Brett (For the People's Ben Rappaport) and Alice (The Carrie Diaries' AnnaSophia Robb). But the ragtag group of gardeners wasn't just planting your garden-variety gardenias — they were also covering up a death. BROAD ARROW ADDS THE FOURTH SHELBY COBRA EVER BUILT, CSX 2003, TO MONTEREY JET CENTER AUCTION
Grosse Pointe, Michigan, June 20, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Broad Arrow Auctions, a Hagerty (NYSE: HGTY) company, is honored to announce the presentation of one of the earliest Cobras ever built, the 1962 Shelby Cobra, CSX 2003, at its flagship Monterey Jet Center Auction on August 13-14, 2025. The highly significant and remarkably preserved Cobra is joined by additional modern American automotive legends, including a seldom-seen 2011 Hennessey Venom GT, and six cars offered from The American Performance Collection, led by a pair of highly optioned, extremely low-mileage limited edition 2017 Dodge Vipers. The 1962 Shelby Cobra on offer at the Monterey Jet Center Auction, CSX 2003, is the earliest serialized Cobra that may be available for decades to come. As one of the only original prototypes extant, CSX 2003 was completed at Ed Hugus' European Cars dealership in Pittsburgh as the fourth Shelby Cobra ever built. Hugus, like Shelby, was an accomplished sports car racer—one of the few Americans to compete at Le Mans ten times—and it was at his suggestion that Shelby pursued AC Cars in England, whose aging Ace roadster needed a new engine supplier, for his fledgling sports car idea. Shelby seized the opportunity to install Ford's new small-block V8, but he lacked the funding and facilities to begin production. Hugus stepped forward as Shelby's first ally—agreeing to promote, finance, and even help build the first Cobras—a partnership that would literally launch the legend of the Shelby Cobra. In early 1962, Hugus' best mechanics began installing the high-performance Ford 260 cu-in V8 HP experimental engines and Borg Warner four-speed transmissions into the AC aluminum British bodies, completing the very first Shelby Cobras for sale, including CSX 2001, the first production Cobra, and CSX 2003 through CSX 2007. This early effort was crucial to the Cobra's success: it bought Shelby enough time to secure Ford's official backing and set the stage for Shelby American's later triumphs on road and track. CSX 2003 is one of the only prototype examples, in its original, untouched form, known to exist today. Alongside CSX 2004, Ford's Special Vehicles Team in Dearborn evaluated the Cobra as a prerequisite to signing any formal agreement with Shelby. Company engineers—including Henry Ford II himself—inspected and drove CSX 2003 during this period, examining its design and capabilities first-hand. It was after this important testing period that the car was shipped to its first private owner, George Reed of Reed's Racing Rats Motors in Homewood, Illinois. In Reed's ownership, CSX 2003 was shown at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1963. Sometime after this appearance, the car entered a short chain of private owners from 1969 until 1989, when it met Mr. Richard 'Doc' McAdam of Virginia, who would become its loving caretaker for the next 36 years. Mr. McAdam acquired the car somewhat serendipitously. He had purchased a 289 Cobra one year prior. That car's previous owner later approached McAdam seeking to repurchase his former Cobra. McAdam agreed, but only under specific conditions: 'only if you find me another Cobra, and if I approve, we can swap.' The 289 owner subsequently sourced CSX 2003 and presented it as a potential trade. Upon test driving the early Cobra, Mr. McAdam recognized its exceptional state of preservation and agreed to the trade. A few years after acquiring CSX 2003, Mr. McAdam received an invitation through his daughter—a Ford employee at the time—to attend a special event celebrating Carroll Shelby, hosted by Ford Motor Company in Washington, D.C. At this gathering, he had the honor of meeting Shelby personally, who examined the Cobra, praised its exceptional condition, and signed the inner door of the glove compartment. For the past 36 years, Mr. McAdam has cherished CSX 2003, even using the Cobra as his daily transportation to the hospital where he worked as a neurosurgeon. This daily use continued for many years until the Cobra's increasing value and rarity ultimately convinced him to retire it to climate-controlled storage. Even in retirement, however, the consignor and his sons would periodically exercise CSX 2003, ensuring it remained in proper working order while safeguarding its remarkable originality. CSX 2003 is presented at Broad Arrow's Monterey Jet Center Auction in its original configuration of Olde English White over a red interior, and complete with its original Experimental HP 260 cu-in engine, transmission, and rear end (Estimate: $1,500,000 - $2,000,000). This beautifully maintained and well-documented Cobra would be a worthy centerpiece for any collector who appreciates the profound story and unrepeatable provenance of the early Hugus-built Prototype Shelby Cobras. Watch the trailer for a film on this Cobra's fascinating history here. 'I have had the honor and the pleasure of helping clients buy and sell numerous Shelby Cobras over my more than forty years in the collector car business, and CSX 2003 is undoubtedly one of the most original and most significant examples I've ever encountered,' says Donnie Gould, Senior Car Specialist, Broad Arrow Auctions. 'This car's very existence is tied to the Shelby Cobra's origin story, and its current long-term ownership history embodies what attracts so many of us to this great hobby to begin with. We're privileged to present CSX 2003 at our Monterey Jet Center Auction for what is surely an unrepeatable opportunity.' Broad Arrow is delighted to present additional American automotive legends of the modern era in Monterey, led by a 2011 Hennessey Venom GT (Estimate: $350,000 - $450,000, Offered without reserve). The car on offer is chassis 03 of a mere 13 Venom GTs produced between 2011 and 2014. Finished in a striking Venom Red exterior over a black leather and Alcantara cabin, it shows fewer than 2,300 kilometers from new. The Venom GT inherited the timeless Anglo-American tradition of marrying raw American power with sophisticated British chassis architecture. It blends a bespoke carbon-fiber monocoque—sourced from Lotus—with a supercharged 6.2-liter LS9 V8 delivering 725 horsepower through a six-speed Ricardo manual transaxle. Carbon-ceramic Brembo brakes, fully independent suspension and adjustable aero elements ensure stability at extreme speeds, while an Alcantara-trimmed interior, comprehensive instrumentation, and factory-fitted air-conditioning—likely having to do with the Venom's Texas origins—demonstrate that creature comforts were not overlooked. The Venom GT offers a primitive, raw driving experience with the convenience of modern technology—a combination that appeals to today's younger, most active collectors. This is a low-mileage, speed-record-holding, ultra-rare American hypercar offered without reserve in Monterey, a moment not to be missed. Alongside the Venom GT, the American Performance Collection is bringing modern American horsepower to Monterey in spades. The collection features six extensively optioned Dodge and Chevrolet performance icons that are among the finest examples available. 'The American Performance Collection offers modern American automotive ferocity at its finest, with over 4,000 horsepower represented by just six cars,' says Harrison Platz, Car Specialist, Broad Arrow Auctions. 'Each of the cars was acquired from new by the owner and they all maintain extremely low miles today. For the rising generation of car collectors, these are the future of the hobby, with each car offering the best specifications, most interesting color combinations, and some of the highest horsepower examples available for the model.' The group includes: 2017 Dodge Viper GTC ACR Extreme Aero Package, a virtually new, time-capsule example of Dodge's ultimate track-capable supercar. Finished in custom matte gold enhanced with Black GTS stripes over a Black leather and Alcantara interior, it is one of six 'Black Stripe' editions built (Estimate: $325,000 - $375,000); 2017 Dodge Viper ACR Extreme Aero Package, one of just 193 Viper ACRs built for 2017. Finished in optional Gunmetal Pearl, this is the ultimate street-legal track variant of the Viper with significant advancements in aerodynamics and suspension technology (Estimate: $270,000 - $300,000); 2021 Dodge Challenger SRT Super Stock, handsomely specified in Smoke Show paint with Black Alcantara/Laguna leather interior and equipped with the Super Stock Package including beefed-up Brembo four-piston brakes, widebody fender flares, and drag-optimized components (Estimate: $90,000 - $100,000, Offered without reserve); 2023 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE, finished in Summit White with Satin Black hood wrap over a Jet Black interior with Red accents. This is a turnkey, road-legal track monster poised for both thrilling 650-horsepower performance and future collectability (Estimate: $85,000 - $95,000, Offered without reserve); 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Convertible, optioned with the top-level 3LZ Preferred Equipment Group. Finished in Shark Grey Metallic with a Black Convertible top and a Kalahari interior, this is a rare opportunity to acquire a near-new example of one of the fastest convertible C7s ever produced (Estimate: $70,000 - $80,000, Offered without reserve); 2016 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, finished in Plum Crazy Pearl Coat over a Black Premium Laguna Leather interior. This is a virtually new example of the most powerful muscle car when new, rated at 707 horsepower (Estimate: $55,000 - $65,000, Offered without reserve). Driver avoids prison in 100-mph crash that killed college student
A Michigan mother is heartbroken again after the teenager who killed her son in a 2023 car crash was spared prison time during his sentencing last week. Grosse Pointe police initially responded to the single-vehicle crash on Nov. 17, 2023, and located the defendant, Kiernan Tague, belted into the driver's seat, and the 18-year-old victim, Flynn MacKrell, unresponsive and belted into the passenger seat. Prosecutors accused Tague of driving about 100 mph in a 25-mph zone around 9 p.m. when he crashed the vehicle into a telephone pole. The defendant was initially charged with second-degree murder but later pleaded guilty to manslaughter with a motor vehicle with an adult designation in February 2025 and was given a "blended sentence" last week due to his age at the time of the crash: 16. Tague, now 18, was sentenced to serve probation at a Level two placement facility, as FOX 2 Detroit reported. Fox News Digital reached out to Tague's attorney for comment. "The evidence in this case will show that the defendant was driving in a residential neighborhood at speeds that rival speeding on Michigan freeways," Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a June 13 statement. "Sadly, Mr. MacKrell lost his life as a result. We know that the rules of the road exist for a reason, speed kills. Driving 25 in a residential neighborhood is mandated, not a mere suggestion." MacKrell's mother, Anne Vanker, of Grosse Pointe, expressed her disappointment with the sentencing results in a June 13 Facebook post. "Today, instead of being held accountable, Kiernan Tague was once again shielded from facing the full consequences of his violent and criminal actions. He killed my son, Flynn MacKrell, through repeated reckless and destructive behavior, and yet, even after 18 months, the justice system has failed to hold him fully responsible," Vanker wrote. "This is not justice." Vanker added that "[d]espite clear recommendations from two pre-sentencing reports calling for adult sentencing, overwhelming evidence, and the applicable Michigan Court Rules that allow the court to consider the full scope of Kiernan's behavior, the court chose leniency over accountability." "This decision results in a continued injustice for Flynn, our family, and every community that expects real consequences for fatal, preventable actions," Vanker said, adding that her family "will never stop fighting for Flynn" and "will continue to advocate for stronger laws." "My son, my Flynn, was my life, my heart. No words can capture the silence, the rage, and the sorrow that fill every corner of my world. This statement cannot express the hell I live every day since Flynn's death, but Flynn's voice was stolen, now mine must speak for him." She also read a victim impact statement in court last week during the sentencing hearing. In her statement, Vanker remembered her son, who had just started studying at the University of Dayton before the crash, as "a cherished child of God" and "a true gift." She also described Tague's "escalating violent behavior" and "willful disregard for his mother's authority, the law, and basic human life." Vanker added that Tague has never acknowledged "the gravity of the crime" and has never expressed "remorse" for Flynn's death. "Kiernan Tague has been involved in 20 police incidents since 2018. Most of these police interactions were triggered by Kiernan's mother calling 911 because of his uncontrollable outbursts," she wrote. Tague's driving history in the months before the crash included hitting speeds of 102 mph, 127 mph, 143 mph, 150 mph and 155 mph, the Detroit Free Press reported, citing police reports, cellphone exchanges and Life360 records. Vanker also noted that Tague's family used the Life 360 app to keep tabs on their son's location, as many parents do, and a search warrant for data from the app showed Tague's reckless driving tendencies. Police reports, Life360 records and other documents showed "From November 1 to November 17, Kiernan made 94 trips in his car," Vanker wrote. "Of those 94 trips, 10% were over 120 [mph], 18% were over 110 [mph], 26% were over 100 [mph], and 45% were over 90 [mph]. The top speed was recorded on November 1, 2023, when Kiernan Tague traveled at or above 153.7 mph for 20.5 miles." Tague also spoke at his sentencing and at times became choked up when talking about Flynn, whom he described as his best friend, according to FOX 2. "My heart is profoundly heavy with grief, regret and remorse," Tague said on June 13, as FOX 2 reported. "What pains me most is that I know that any pain that I've experienced is nothing compared to what Flynn's loved ones, especially his parents, sister, brother, and family have experienced."
