Neville Gallimore on what separates Colts' Grover Stewart from other DTs

The Indianapolis Colts' Grover Stewart has steadily been one of the better interior run defenders across the NFL, and Neville Gallimore recently highlighted one aspect of Stewart's game that makes him so difficult to go up against. "I can say I'm labeled as a strong guy, but then you just got guys that are at a different level," Gallimore said. "And it's funny just coming here, Grover is definitely one of those guys, like that dude just throws up weight. He's doing the alternate incline bench 170s, and I'm over here 160s, like yelling, huffing and puffing, and he's like, 'let me get that.'" When an interior defender has the strength advantage, they are difficult to move and can generate quick push, which is the best way to wreck any offensive play. Advertisement Out of 153 eligible defensive tackles last season, Stewart ranked seventh in PFF's run defense grade. He also tallied the seventh-most tackles against the run, along with ranking sixth in stops. And of all the tackles Stewart made, the average play came just 1.3 yards from the line of scrimmage, which was the third-best mark among his position group. Indianapolis Colts' OTAs: The big question at defensive tackle

The Indianapolis Colts will begin Phase III of the offseason programs on May 28th, which means the start of voluntary Organized Team Activities (OTAs). Rather than only doing individual drills as the Colts have been doing, they will now be permitted to do 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 team drills, although no live contact is allowed. Advertisement So with this important part of the offseason schedule about to begin, I wanted to highlight one big question facing each position group. Up next are the defensive tackles. Below you can find our previous position previews. Can the Indianapolis Colts get improved play behind DeForest Buckner and Grover Stewart? We know how good DeForest Buckner and Grover Stewart are, but the defensive tackle spot is a very heavily rotated position, which puts a premium on having quality depth. Last season, the Colts' defense didn't get enough from those on the depth chart behind Buckner and Stewart. From a getting after the quarterback standpoint, Taven Bryan and Raekwon Davis totaled just 12 pressures on 333 combined pass rush snaps. Among all defensive tackles, Bryan ranked 96th out of 124 eligible interior defenders in pass rush productivity, and Davis was 122nd. Advertisement In the run game, Bryan ranked 120th out of 153 defenders in PFF's run-stop rate metric, and Davis was 149th. The Colts have reshaped the defensive tackle depth chart a bit this offseason, signing Neville Gallimore in free agency and adding Tim Smith in the draft. Adetomiwa Adebawore is returning for his third NFL season as well. 'I think what's unique about him (Tim Smith) is his ability to play blocks," said assistant director of college scouting Jamie Moore via the Indy Star. "It's something that (defensive coordinator) Lou (Anarumo) talked about when he got here, explaining how this defense is going to operate up front." Along with those additions, Lou Anarumo's more aggressive defensive scheme that'll include more movement up front can hopefully help elevate the play of the defenders behind Stewart and Buckner. Colts 2025 NFL combine: Top 5 performers from defensive tackle position

Colts 2025 NFL combine: Top 5 performers from defensive tackle position Who were the 2025 NFL combine's top performers at defensive tackle? Although this may not be a pressing need for the Indianapolis Colts with DeForest Buckner and Grover Stewart on the roster, the depth behind those two must improve this season. On Thursday, the defensive line and linebacker position groups took the field for the on-field testing portion of the event. Kent Lee Platte, who developed the Relative Athletic Score--which you can read more about here--has done the leg work and tracked the times and measurements for each prospect. Given the nature of the defensive tackle position, one that is often rotated over the course of a game, depth is important, and we saw opposing offenses find quite a bit of success against the Colts' defense with Buckner and/or Stewart weren't on the field. Now, of course, a dropoff in play to some degree is expected with how good those two are, but the Colts need more consistency from whoever fills in. Last season, in both PFF's pass-rush win rate metric and run-stop rate metric, Taven Bryan and Raekwon Davis ranked among the worst at the defensive tackle position group league-wide. Bryan is also a free agent this offseason, and Davis is a potential cut candidate. When looking at the defensive tackle position in regards to the on-field testing, take note of how these prospects perform in the explosiveness drills--the vertical, broad jump, and their 10-yard split in the 40-yard dash. Also, note the arm length as well. Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins, Georgia Ty Robinson, Nebraska Jared Harrison-Hunte, SMU Zeek Biggers, Georgia Tech Warren Brinson, Georgia
