North Wales Clean Energy Infrastructure Project Gets Underway
North Wales Clean Energy Infrastructure Project Gets Underway The Cydnerth project, which will support the expansion of the Morlais tidal energy scheme, has moved into its construction phase, marking a major milestone for the North Wales low-carbon economy. Work has begun on-site at Parc Cybi, Holyhead, to strengthen the grid infrastructure for Morlais, a flagship tidal energy project run by local social enterprise, Menter Môn Morlais Ltd. Backed by the North Wales Growth Deal and funding from both the Welsh and UK Governments, the £16 million Cydnerth project will futureproof Morlais by increasing its grid capacity from 18MW to an eventual 240MW. Initial construction will involve the installation of underground cables to transmit clean electricity from the Morlais substation from the coast at Ynys Lawd (South Stack) to the national grid. Cllr. Gary Prichard, Leader of the Isle of Anglesey County Council and Lead Member for Low Carbon Energy Programme, said: 'This is a significant milestone for Morlais and North Wales. The project can now leverage Growth Deal funding to ensure its expansion, enabling economic opportunities, strengthening local supply chains and supporting local jobs. It will ensure North Wales is a key player in the future of tidal energy and clean electricity.' Andy Billcliff, Chief Executive of Menter Môn Morlais Ltd, added: 'This is an important and welcome step toward realising the full potential of Ynys Môn's tidal resources and establishing the area as a hub for sustainable energy. The work at Parc Cybi is crucial to that goal. As a local organisation, we're committed to delivering economic benefits for our community, while safeguarding the environment. We are grateful for Growth Deal support through Ambition North Wales which is essential as we progress Morlais.' North Wales-based Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK has secured the contract for the construction and cabling work for Cydnerth. Contracts Director for Jones Bros, Eryl Roberts, added: 'We're pleased to have been appointed to deliver Cydnerth, the next phase of infrastructure for Morlais, such an innovative renewable scheme right here on our doorstep here in North Wales. As with all our projects, we pride ourselves in providing local supply chain and employment opportunities and are excited to be working on site to deliver this important scheme.' Cydnerth is part of the North Wales Growth Deal's Low Carbon Energy Programme, which represents a £1 billion investment in the region's economy, with £240 million of this funded jointly by the Welsh and UK Governments. Rebecca Evans MS, Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning, said: 'The start of construction on the Cydnerth project represents another major milestone in North Wales' journey to becoming a renewable energy powerhouse. Backed by Welsh Government funding through the North Wales Growth Deal, this will unlock the full potential of Morlais tidal energy and demonstrates our unwavering commitment to the low-carbon transition. 'By increasing grid capacity from 18MW to 240MW, we're not just supporting clean energy generation – we're creating lasting economic opportunities and high-quality jobs for local communities.' Wales Office Minister Dame Nia Griffith said: 'It is great news that this major infrastructure project in Holyhead is now underway. The Cydnerth project helps cement North Wales's growing reputation as a clean energy hub. 'I'm delighted that UK Government funding is supporting the project and helping us deliver our clean energy and economic growth missions.'

Leaders Reflect on Growth Deal and Wider Investment in Mid Wales
Senior representatives from the UK and Welsh Governments joined Growing Mid Wales (GMW) at the Royal Welsh Showground to reflect on the continued progress being made across the region – and to reaffirm their shared commitment to unlocking further investment and opportunity. With many initiatives gearing up to enter the delivery phase over the next 12–15 months, momentum is building across the Growth Deal as Mid Wales looks to the future and the discussion focused on how joint working continues to drive economic development in the region. The Mid Wales Growth Deal remains a cornerstone of regional investment, with over £110 million jointly committed by the UK and Welsh Governments. The investment is expected to unlock over £400 million in total investment, support between 1,000 and 1,400 jobs, and contribute to raising productivity and GDP across the region. Over the last 12 months, the Deal has continued to move forward, with key achievements including: The launch of the Mid Wales Commercial Property Investment Fund, providing targeted support to develop high-quality commercial space across the region. Full business case approval for projects through the Digital Programme, helping to improve broadband connectivity in rural and hard-to-reach areas. Progress within key areas such as tourism, fostering innovation and resilience in foundational sectors. The Growth Deal is part of a broader, integrated and complementary set of initiatives being driven by GMW – designed to tackle long-standing challenges while building on the region's unique strengths and assets. Together, these initiatives are helping to create the conditions for sustainable and inclusive economic growth. Beyond the Growth Deal, the region has also made significant strides through other GMW activity: Investment from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) is supporting place-based regeneration and local business growth. Energy projects are developing new models for clean, rural energy systems through innovation funding. The Mid Wales Regional Skills Partnership continues to align training with employer needs, and Work is underway on a new Regional Transport Plan to improve connectivity across Mid Wales. In a joint statement, Councillor Bryan Davies, Leader of Ceredigion County Council and Councillor Jake Berriman, Leader of Powys County Council, joint Growing Mid Wales Board Chairs, said: 'We've reached important milestones through the Growth Deal, but that's just part of the story. By building on our strengths and working collaboratively, we're securing wider investment and laying the foundations for a more prosperous, better-connected Mid Wales. 'We're proud of the progress made not only through the Growth Deal, but across our broader regional work – from energy to skills and regeneration. We look forward to working with both governments to realise future opportunities as part of the new UK industrial strategy and any further investment to continue delivering our shared ambitions for Mid Wales.' Wales Office Minister Dame Nia Griffith said: 'The UK Government is proud to invest in the future of Mid Wales through the Growth Deal, helping us achieve our mission of economic growth for every part of Wales. 'We are already seeing positive results, and by continuing to work closely with local partners, we can ensure the region thrives and there are good opportunities for generations to come.' Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning, Rebecca Evans, said: 'The £55 million Welsh Government contribution into the Mid Wales Growth Deal will foster the right conditions to promote economic prosperity and enable businesses to flourish in Mid Wales. 'It will unlock the region's significant potential, create quality jobs, and deliver lasting benefits for communities.' The visit formed part of Growing Mid Wales' presence at the Royal Welsh Showground, showcasing how investment and partnership are helping the region thrive.

Community projects receive more than £700,000 to help transform Stranraer
More than £700,000 of funding has been awarded to two projects aimed at transforming Stranraer. The money, secured by Dumfries and Galloway Council from the Scottish Government, will go towards the development of residential and office spaces in the town, as well as a new community hub. Cllr Andy Ferguson, Chair of the council's Economy and Infrastructure Committee, says the £710,000 investment will be a "turning point" for the town. He said: "When the ferries left in 2011, there was a big hole left in Stranraer's heart. Jobs were lost, and spending in the town dropped dramatically. The impact was felt across the community. "It's the first real step in delivering on the hopes and ambitions of the people of Stranraer. This signals the unlocking of the £6 million funding announced by the Scottish Government in 2016 for the regeneration of Stranraer.' Stranraer was identified as one of five towns in Dumfries and Galloway eligible for investment through the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal. Funding for these projects will come from an investment of £9m provided by the Growth Deal and the commitment of the Scottish Government. Cllr Tony Berretti, Vice Chair of the Economy and Infrastructure Committee, believes the creation of the Stranraer Place Plan and the Town Team "have been game-changers". He said: "This grant is a testament to the hard work of our communities, partner organisations, and council officers. "We're still in the early stages, but this funding allows us to begin the vital planning and survey work needed to bring these projects to life.'
