Hong Kong should keep southbound travel plan's 100-car quota flexible: CY Leung
Hong Kong should consider relaxing a proposed 100-vehicle quota for a scheme set to allow Guangdong motorists to drive to the city, former leader Leung Chun-ying has said, suggesting the limit could be adjusted for weekdays and holidays. Advertisement Leung, who now serves as a vice-chairman of the nation's top political advisory body, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, raised the suggestion on Saturday. Earlier this week, transport officials said drivers could start applying for the Southbound Travel for Guangdong Vehicles scheme from November, with 100 motorists set to be allowed to cross into the city via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge each day. Leung said the policy was a small progressive step towards a larger breakthrough, adding that the government could relax the quota if no accidents or traffic problems arose in the weeks after the scheme's launch. The cap could also be applied flexibly for weekdays and various holidays, he said. Advertisement 'For example, we have Christmas holidays, but mainland China doesn't. The mainland has many Golden Week holidays that we don't,' he told a television programme.

Woo Guangdong visitors under cross-border scheme, Hong Kong transport chief says
A highly anticipated cross-border driving scheme for Guangdong residents will provide a boost for Hong Kong's tourism-related industries, the transport chief has said, as she called on different sectors to offer a variety of tailored packages linked to hotels, restaurants and events to woo the new source of visitors. Advertisement Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan on Thursday noted the business sector's enthusiasm over the launch of the Southbound Travel for Guangdong Vehicles scheme, which will allow a daily quota of 100 vehicles to enter the city's urban areas via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. 'I am pleased to note the positive response from different sectors, especially the business industry including hotels, catering, retail, AsiaWorld-Expo, and business chambers. They are all very supportive,' she told the media, a day after announcing that the scheme would be launched in November, a month earlier than planned. 'The business sector is actually very quick-witted. Industry players can actively explore launching packages, such as parking combined with accommodation, exhibitions, or other activities and mega-events.' Chan stressed that packages tailor-made for Guangdong drivers would help improve supporting facilities and connections, and inform promotional strategies that would better capitalise on this new group of visitors. Advertisement 'With the package offerings which cater to Guangdong visitors, we can help disseminate relevant information and promote the scheme to the mainland. With our joint efforts we can make this good policy even better,' she said.

Mainland Chinese drivers can apply for Hong Kong entry permits in November
Drivers from Guangdong province will be able to apply to drive to Hong Kong in November under a highly anticipated cross-border scheme, transport minister Mable Chan has said. The Southbound Travel for Guangdong Vehicles scheme is expected to be implemented a month earlier than originally planned. Vehicles would be allowed to enter the city through the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge, with a daily quota of 100 applications, she said on Wednesday. Under the scheme, mainland Chinese drivers in Guangdong can get into the city after having their licence and procedures processed, such as insurance purchase, car inspections and applications for a permit for a single entry. Those drivers can park their cars at the Hong Kong International Airport, which is building 1,800 automated parking spaces for visitors on the artificial island by early next year, she said. For single-entry permits, applicants will be eligible to stay in the city for a number of days, provided that the driver and the vehicle licensee are the same person at the time of application. The duration of stay is pending finalisation.

Hong Kong shouldn't let lack of space hold up Guangdong driver scheme: minister
Hong Kong should not be held back by a lack of land or parking spaces in pushing ahead with a plan to let Guangdong province residents drive to the city , the transport minister has said, as she reiterated that the scheme would be rolled out with strict controls. Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan told lawmakers on Wednesday that the government was working with mainland Chinese authorities to implement the scheme and had ruled out the need to establish separate restricted zones or roads for the vehicles. 'Preparations also include evaluating traffic and road capacity at border crossings to manage vehicle flow and avoid peak congestion, as well as strengthening immigration procedures, transport infrastructure and contingency plans,' she said. The Southbound Travel for Guangdong Vehicles scheme has been the subject of discussion for years and was originally expected to start at the end of 2024 or early this year. Chan said authorities would develop strict risk protocols such as requiring vehicles arriving in Hong Kong to comply with safety regulations and be covered by third-party insurance. The government would also prepare clear information on application procedures, driving rules and available amenities to provide convenience while maintaining strict controls, she noted.
