Ooty: Madras Regimental Centre pays tribute to Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw on his death anniversary
Ooty (Tamil Nadu) [India], June 27 (ANI): On the death anniversary of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, the Madras Regimental Centre, Wellington in Ooty, observed a wreath-laying ceremony at his final resting place. Senior officers, including the Commandant of the Defence Services Staff College, Station Commander and members of the Parsi Community, laid wreaths at the Manekshaw Memorial. A Guard of Honour was presented as a mark of respect, followed by a two-minute silence in memory of the departed hero. According to Lt Gen Virendra Vats, Commandant, Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, field marshal Sam Manekshaw is 'undoubtedly' the most inspiring military leader of their time. He mentioned that his works and deeds will continue to inspire the upcoming generations. 'Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw is undoubtedly the most inspiring military leader of our times. His deeds and words continue to inspire us and will continue to do so, to the future generations', he told ANI. Sam Manekshaw was born on April 3, 1914, in Amritsar, and he died of pneumonia at the Military Hospital in Wellington, Tamil Nadu, on June 27, 2008, at the age of 94. Manekshaw joined the British Indian Army in 1932 and served with distinction during World War II. His career spanned over four decades and five wars, including the Indo-Pak War of 1947 and the liberation of Hyderabad in 1948. He was the first Indian Army officer to be promoted to the rank of Field Marshal. Manekshaw was also the first Indian officer to command the Gorkhas after India won Independence. He was honoured with the Military Cross on the battlefront during the Second World War. Manekshaw, fondly called 'Sam Bahadur,' led the Indian Army to victory in the 1971 war with Pakistan, which resulted in the creation of Bangladesh. His legacy as one of India's finest military commanders endures, inspiring future generations. (ANI)

NCC embraces digital future: online enrolment and drone training unveiled
Hyderabad: Lieutenant General Gurbirpal Singh, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, Director General of the National Cadet Corps (NCC), on Wednesday highlighted a series of new initiatives being undertaken by the NCC Headquarters in New Delhi. Addressing the media on Wednesday, Lt Gen Singh outlined plans including the online enrolment of cadets, the integration of technology into training—specifically the use of drones—the provision of dress allowances for cadets, and ongoing efforts to ensure gender balance within the corps. The DG NCC noted the high demand for NCC programmes across schools and colleges in both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. He also shared ambitions to expand the programme to accommodate three lakh cadets nationwide, aiming to fulfil the aspirations of young people across the country. During his two-day visit to the NCC Directorate for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, which commenced on Wednesday, the Director General received comprehensive briefings from Air Commodore Narsingh Sailani, Deputy Director General of the NCC Directorate (AP & T), alongside all Group Commanders. He conducted a thorough review of enrolment and training standards and engaged directly with the cadets and staff of the 1 (Telangana) Girls Battalion NCC. The review of the AP and Telangana NCC Directorates' operations included discussions on the achievements, challenges, and future plans of their respective NCC Groups. The extensive briefing covered a range of topics, including online cadet enrolment, annual training camps, community service initiatives, logistical considerations, adventure and military training activities, and preparations for the upcoming Thal, Vayu, and Nau Sainik Camps. Lt Gen Gurbirpal Singh visited the 1 Telangana Girls Battalion NCC, which operates under the NCC Group Headquarters in Secunderabad, to interact with cadets and staff. The cadets demonstrated their discipline and military bearing through an impressive Guard of Honour. The General Officer commended the performance of the NCC Directorate (AP & T) in Secunderabad, praising the cadets and staff for their dedication. He also acknowledged the significant efforts of Associate NCC Officers (ANOs), Group Commanders (GCIs), cadets, and civilian staff. During his interactions with the cadets, the Director General of NCC encouraged them to strive for excellence in all fields—whether pursuing careers in the armed forces, public service, or various roles within civil society. He urged them to 'dream big, remain disciplined, and embody the core values of the NCC: Unity and Discipline.'

Top BSF officer reviews operational preparedness along Indo-Bangla border with Tripura
Agartala: BSF's Additional Director General (ADG), Eastern Command, Kolkata, on Tuesday visited several Border Outposts (BOPs) and Integrated Check Post (ICP) Agartala-Akhaura and interacted with field commanders and jawans and reviewed operational preparedness, an official said. A BSF spokesman said that senior IPS officer Aggarwal, soon after his arrival in Agartala on a four-day visit to Tripura, was received at the airport by Ashwani Kumar Sharma, Inspector General (IG), BSF Tripura frontier. Upon his arrival at BSF frontier headquarters, the ADG was accorded a Guard of Honour. Later, he was briefed by the frontier IG Sharma on the operational issues and key strategic matters. 'The ADG visited BOP Bhagalpur, BOP Lankamura and ICP Agartala-Akhaura (along the India-Bangladesh border) to take stock of the operational preparedness and interact with field commanders and jawans,' the spokesman said. Tripura, which has an 856 km border with Bangladesh, is surrounded on three sides by the neighbouring country, making the northeastern state very vulnerable and sensitive to cross-border migration issues. Except for some patches, most of the frontier had been fenced to prevent smuggling, trans-border crimes, cross-border illegal movements by infiltrators and inimical elements. Senior BSF officer's visit to Tripura came four days after a top Army officer's visit to the bordering state. General Officer Commanding (GOC), Red Shield Division of the Indian Army, Major General S.S. Kartikeya, visited the Army training facility in Tripura and reviewed the combat training of the troops last week. Defence spokesman Lt Col Amit Shukla had said that during his visit, the GOC witnessed a series of rigorous training modules being undertaken by the troops, including jungle warfare, firing drills, drone operations, obstacle navigation and special operations. The training facility has been instrumental in enhancing terrain-specific warfare skills and technological integration for soldiers operating in the northeastern region, the spokesman said. He said that interacting with the soldiers post the demonstration, the General Officer appreciated the dedication, adaptability to emerging technologies and exceptional state of physical and mental toughness of the personnel. Major General Kartikeya applauded the professionalism and discipline displayed by the troops and urged all ranks to continue striving for excellence. The visit underscores the Army's continued focus on capacity building, operational readiness and motivation of troops serving in challenging operational environments.

Union Minister Kumaraswamy inspects Salem Steel Plant
SALEM: Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries HD Kumaraswamy paid an official visit to the Salem Steel Plant on Friday. The minister was received by district authorities and plant officials and was accorded a Guard of Honour. 'The steel is not just a material, it is the backbone of national development,' Kumaraswamy said, highlighting the sector's central role in realising the government's vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047. During a tour of the plant, a unit of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), the minister observed the entire steelmaking process from scrap processing to production of stainless steel slabs. 'This plant reflects the true spirit of Make in India,' he said. In a high-level review meeting, discussions on boosting production capacity, addressing operational bottlenecks, and leveraging renewable energy to cut costs were held. 'Speciality steel is the future. Salem can play a key role in this with full capacity utilisation and a smart product mix,' Kumaraswamy added. He assured labour union representatives that workers' concerns would be addressed. The visit aligns with the centre's goals of achieving 300 MT steel production by 2030 and net zero emissions by 2070, he added.

HD Kumaraswamy reviews operations at Salem Steel Plant, calls for focus on profitability and capacity
Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries , HD Kumaraswamy , visited the Salem Steel Plant , a unit of the Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL), where he reviewed its operations and discussed ways to enhance profitability and capacity utilisation. Kumaraswamy was received by the district administration and plant officials. He was accorded a Guard of Honour and planted a sapling on the premises, marking the visit's focus on sustainable practices. 'Steel is not just a material, it is the backbone of national development. From infrastructure to innovation, our goal is growth with responsibility,' he said during the visit. The visit aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi 's national vision of increasing India's steel production capacity to 300 million tonnes by 2030, achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070, and supporting the broader goal of building a developed India by 2047. Steelmaking process Kumaraswamy toured several units in the plant, observing the production cycle from scrap processing to slab casting. He visited the scrapyard, Steel Melting Shop , Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) , and slab caster , and observed operations involving the torch cutting machine and cold rolling mill. 'The level of technological sophistication and discipline I've seen here is commendable. This plant reflects the true spirit of Make in India,' the Minister stated. The EAF-based production process at Salem is part of a cleaner steelmaking approach aimed at reducing emissions in line with India's climate targets. Discussions on strategic upgrades and speciality steel The Minister also reviewed the plant's output of stainless steel products, including pipes, railway wagons, submersible pump components, coin blanks, and domestic LPG cylinder sheets. These are used across various sectors such as infrastructure, railways, defence, and energy. 'The finished products emerging from this plant touch millions of lives every day from homes to industries,' Kumaraswamy said. In a review meeting attended by the Chairman and Managing Director of SAIL, Joint Secretary (Steel), and the Executive Director of the Salem Plant, the Minister discussed plans to enhance the plant's focus on speciality steel. These products are used in applications such as defence, railways, aerospace, and engineering. 'We are committed to revitalising this strategic asset. Speciality steel is the future, and Salem Steel Plant can become more cost-efficient by using renewable energy including solar and wind. There should be full capacity utilisation and deciding on the final product mix,' he added. The Minister also met with labour union representatives and assured them of action on their concerns.
