Mavericks Champion J.J. Barea Lands NBA Coaching Gig

Mavericks Champion J.J. Barea Lands NBA Coaching Gig originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Shortly before retiring from a 14-year NBA career in 2019, point guard J.J. Barea moved back to his native Puerto Rico to be the head coach of the Indios de Mayagüez in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional. He spent a brief stint as a Dallas Mavericks player development coach before returning to Puerto Rico in 2023 to coach the Mets de Guaynabo. Advertisement Now, sources confirm that Barea will continue his young coaching career and return to the NBA as he joins David Adelman's staff with the Denver Nuggets as an assistant coach. Barea, 41, was a fan-favorite during his 11-year playing career with the Mavericks from 2005-2010 and 2013-2019. The 5-10 guard played for the Minnesota Timberwolves for three years in between those two stints. A dependable role player on both ends of the floor, Barea is best remembered for being a major contributor in the Mavs' 2011 NBA championship, averaging 8.8 points and 3 assists per game in the Finals series. He's an integral part in Mavs' lore having appeared in the starting lineup in the final three games of the series and providing much-needed gutsy defense against the LeBron James-led Miami Heat. Advertisement Barea was always respected for his upbeat personality and strong friendships with all of his teammates. He grew especially close with franchise stars Dirk Nowitzki and Luka Doncic during their times together in Dallas. Barea now brings those leadership traits to the Nuggets after a peculiar shakeup of their coaching staff last season. Head coach Michael Malone was surprisingly fired just three-games before the end of the regular season. After getting bounced in the second-round of the playoffs, Adelman, who served as the interim coach during the run, has been hired as the replacement. The Nuggets have been active elsewhere in free agency this week, as well. Denver traded forward Michael Porter Jr. to the Brooklyn Nets for Cameron Johnson and also re-acquired Bruce Brown, who was a member of the Nuggets' title team in 2023. Advertisement Related: P.J. Ex-NBA superstar speaks out after brawling with fans in chaotic scenes following ejection

Ex-NBA star DeMarcus Cousins has spoken out after he brawled with fans in chaotic scenes following being ejected from a game in Puerto Rico. The 34-year-old was playing for Mets de Guaynabo against Bayamon when things turned ugly after a fan began swearing and holding his middle fingers up. Cousins then lays a hand on the man, before being pulled away by a teammate as tempers continue to rise. A second fan then gets involved before Cousins is dragged to the other side of the court by a teammate, where it is then claimed he got ejected from the game. Now, after his suspension for the rest of the season, Cousins has spoken out. 'I want to apologize to the fans of Puerto Rico for my actions,' Cousins said on Thursday on his Instagram story. 'I have so much love and respect for the island.' Cousins has been out of the NBA for three years and is currently plying his trade in Puerto Rico, where things turned ugly on Monday night. Cousins' response was caught on camera from various angles by fans inside the arena, with the ex-NBA star grabbing his crotch and getting in the man's face. A new angle then shows an incredible second incident, in which fans appear to throw various drinks at Cousins, which leads to the red mist descending. Initially, the former first-round pick can be seen putting his middle finger into the faces of various fans, before the drinks rain down on him and cause him to snap. He swings punches at those around him, before security bundle him to the ground in a failed attempt to calm the situation down. Cousins can then be seen getting back to his feet, sparking more drinks to land on him, further enraging the basketball star. He is then pulled down the tunnel and away from the baying mob. The 6-foot-10 center is a four-time All-Star who began his career in Sacramento, before spending time in New Orleans, Golden State, Houston, LA, Milwaukee and Denver in a 12-year NBA career. In the past three years he has bounced around teams in Taiwan and Puerto Rico, currently playing in the Baloncesto Superior Nacional.

Former NBA star DeMarcus Cousins booted from Puerto Rico league

June 11 - Former NBA All-Star DeMarcus Cousins was suspended by a Puerto Rico basketball league and had his contract rescinded after igniting a brawl earlier this week. The Baloncesto Superior Nacional League also fined Cousins $4,250, and he could be subject to another fine of $5,570, according to the league. The incident occurred Monday when Cousins was playing on the road for the Guaynabo Mets. "As an organization, we strongly condemn any form of violence or provocation, whether on or off the field. Safety, respect, and sportsmanship are non-negotiable values for this franchise," the Mets said in a news release. The situation began with Cousins exchanging words with a fan before he grabbed his crotch while walking toward the courtside seats. Cousins then grabbed the fan's arm as things quickly escalated. Teammates attempted to pull Cousins away and other fans began to hurl insults at Cousins. After being ejected, Cousins was doused by liquids as he left the floor. Security tackled him at one point to hold him back from trying to get into the stands. Cousins, 34, was averaging 18.2 points and 9.0 rebounds while playing in the top pro basketball league in Puerto Rico for the second time. He also played in the league in 2023. Cousins hasn't played in the NBA since the 2021-22 season. He was a four-time All-Star in 11 seasons but his career was derailed by two major injuries. In January 2018, he sustained an Achilles tendon injury with the New Orleans Pelicans. After returning to play 30 games for the Golden State Warriors the next season, he tore the ACL in his left knee in August 2019 as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers and missed the entire season. Cousins played for seven NBA teams with the best part of his career being his 6 1/2 seasons with the Sacramento Kings from 2010-17. He finished third in Rookie of the Year balloting in 2011 after being the fifth overall pick out of Kentucky. Overall, Cousins averaged 19.6 points and 10.2 rebounds in 654 games (561 starts). --Field Level Media

DeMarcus Cousins kicked off Puerto Rican basketball team after heated exchange with fans turns physical

Former NBA star Demarcus Cousins was booted from his team in Puerto Rico for the remainder of the season after an ugly altercation with fans during a game Monday. The Baloncesto Superior Nacional league announced Tuesday that Cousins was kicked off the Mets de Guaynabo after a vile gesture toward a fan, grabbing his genitals to mock the fan as the fan flipped both his middle fingers. Cousins then grabbed the fan's arm as the incident started turning physical. Another fan from behind the courtside seat where the first fan was seated came to the first fan's aid, swiping at Cousins, who started to bark something back to him. Cousins was ejected from the game, but things got even uglier as he tried to leave the court. Cousins, flipping off the crowd as he was walking to the tunnel, grabbed at a fan yelling at him. They made contact with one another, and the fan proceeded to throw a beverage at the former NBA All-Star. Other fans joined in, throwing drinks and other objects at Cousins. Cousins was irate and had to be held back from going after fans. In addition to being banned for the rest of the season, Cousins was fined $4,250. Cousins' fine could increase to $10,000 if he fails to "show cause" as to why it shouldn't. Cousins, the former Kentucky Wildcats star taken fifth overall in the 2010 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings, last played in the NBA during the 2021-22 season, when he played for the Milwaukee Bucks and Denver Nuggets. Cousins was a four-time All-Star during his 11 NBA seasons. Since his last game with Denver, Cousins has played in Mongolia, Puerto Rico and the Big3 League run by actor and rapper Ice Cube.
