Death of Five Israeli Soldiers Fuels Debate Over Ending Gaza War

TEL AVIV—Five Israeli soldiers were killed in a Hamas ambush in northern Gaza, Israel's military said Tuesday, adding to a string of deadly incidents for Israeli troops that are fueling a debate over ending the war. Since the end of Israel and Iran's 12-day conflict in late June, at least 17 Israeli soldiers have been killed in the Gaza Strip, one of the deadliest periods since the fighting began after a Hamas-led attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. The deaths show that even 21 months into the war, Hamas is still able to carry out a guerrilla warfare campaign.

The conflict has killed an estimated 40,000 people. But today, the rebel group is struggling. Since the failure of a 2019 ceasefire, Manila has hunted down Communist sympathisers, mainly in the movement's rural strongholds. In 2023, NPA forces controlled about 200 villages, compared to more than 1,300 in 2008. Stripped of its funding and influence, the group has only around 1,500 armed fighters left. The Philippines ' president, Ferdinand Marcos Jr, has vowed that the army will complete its rout of the NPA by 2028. FRANCE 24's William de Tamaris reports.
