People in West Yorkshire set to mark Armed Forces Day 2025
Veterans and family members of those who have served in the military say it's "important to celebrate" those who have given their service. Armed Forces Day is held on the last Saturday of June as a "chance to say thank you to the brave men and women who have pledged to defend our nation," SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, gathered at the Veterans' Café event at Ghyll Royd Care Home, Guiseley, on Wednesday to chat over cake and tea and mark Armed Forces Week. Mark Sugrue, from Ilkley, who attended the event, said it was an opportunity to share his experiences of serving with the Royal Air Force Police. More than 180 events are taking place across the UK this year, according to the Ministry of Defence. Mr Sugrue said: "I've been sent out to Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Iraq, Rio De Janeiro, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore, so it was a good time."Thinking back, certainly there were high points and quite a few low points, but they are outweighed by the high points and camaraderie."He added: "We always say, it is not where you are, but who you are with that matters."Colour Sgt Rosie Clarke, from the Keighley Royal Marine cadets, said she enjoyed chatting to "a lovely bunch of ladies" who spoke about their experiences of taking in evacuees during World War Two."We went down memory lane of how my grandad, who served in North Africa and Burma, never collected his war medals," she said."I started the cadets when I was 12 and on my first Remembrance Day my grandma had his medals delivered as a present for me."She continued: "I had the privilege of wearing his medals on my first Remembrance Day." "I think it's important we celebrate Armed Forces Day as it commemorates all of those who are old and young who have served over the years," she Young, operations manager for Spellman Care, who are hosting Veterans' Café events around West Yorkshire, said the event was a "great opportunity to bring everybody together". The pizzas will be made by staff while they do the rest of their shopping. Customers will still need to pay for their pizza at a manned till. The screens are currently available at three stores, including Warrington, Gamston and Guiseley and will be rolled out to 20 additional shops soon. Pictures seen by The Sun suggested that shoppers could choose between four pizza bases including 10 inch thin and crispy, 10 inch deep pan, 10 inch gluten free and 14 inch thin and crispy. There were also two cheese options on offer, including mozzarella and a vegan alternative. Hungry shoppers could also choose to add tomato, BBQ or garlic sauce to their pizza and finish it off with four toppings. Additional toppings could also be added for 50p each. Shoppers took to social media to voice their excitement. One customer said: "Perfect, now I can order pineapple pizza without the funny looks." Top things to buy at Morrisons Another said: "Omg we'll have to have a pizza night." While a third added: "50p extra per topping, what a bargain." The news comes after the supermarket launched a major overhaul of its in-store services earlier this year. In March, Morrisons announced that it would close 18 Market Kitchens, 13 florists, 35 meat counters, 35 fish counters and four pharmacies. Rami Baitieh, chief executive of Morrisons, said that the plans would 'reinvigorate' the supermarket and allow it to invest in other parts of the business. He added: "In most locations the Morrisons Café has a bright future, but a minority have specific local challenges and in those locations, regrettably, closure and re-allocation of the space is the only sensible option. 'Market Street is a beacon of differentiation for Morrisons and we remain committed to it. "But as we modernise we are making some necessary changes to the areas of the model which are simply uneconomic.' The supermarket last month revealed that it will shift towards selling more premium products as part of an overhaul of the brand. The new project, called 'Morrisons Magic' aims to improve customers' experiences. The chain's launch of 'Market Street' is also part of plans to modernise the brand. Morrisons will focus on farm shop-style products, such as value-added items including foil trays for sauced, marinate, breaded and ready-to-cook fish. The supermarket hopes that Market Street will be more accessible and will attract more amateur home cooks. Morrisons also announced a huge change to its loyalty scheme last month. Shoppers can now earn More Points when they're not shopping at the supermarket thanks to its brand new perk. Morrisons More Card holders can collect points with more than 300 popular brands including eBay, Just Eat, Expedia, Asos and Very. Previously shoppers could only get the points when shopping in Morrisons. The change means that customers can now get rewards on all their shopping, including takeaways, gadgets, holidays and clothes. What else is happening at supermarkets? Asda has revealed a major shake up across 180 of its in-store cafes this week as it introduces new digital ordering screens. The chain will begin the makeover this month and all works will be completed by the end of October. Customers will also be able to order from their tables or via staffed tills. It will also introduce several new menu items including smashed avocado on toast, katsu chicken curry, topped salad bowls and wraps. Shoppers will also be able to buy full 12 inch pizzas or single pizzas slices from the cafes for the first time too. Meanwhile, . The frozen food specialist is shutting a location in Margate, Kent, on June 21. A further branch will close for good in Inverness, Scotland, on July 12. Staff at both branches have been offered roles at surrounding stores 'where possible'. Earlier this month M&S revealed it is bringing back shopping after weeks of issues. The posh supermarket was forced to suspend its online shopping after it was hit by a massive cyber attack. You can now place orders online with standard delivery to England, Scotland and Wales. Delivery to Northern Ireland will resume in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, Click & Collect, next-day delivery, nominated day delivery and international ordering will return in the coming weeks.

Guiseley fall just short in play-off final as side fail to make most of reprieve
GUISELEY were unable to grasp their second chance in the Northern Premier League Premier Division play-offs, after losing 2-1 at Worksop Town in the final. It means the hosts go up to National League North alongside champions Macclesfield, while condemning their visitors to a fourth consecutive season in the seventh tier of English football. Guiseley finished fourth in the regular season under Mark Bower, putting them into a tricky away play-off semi-final at third-placed Stockton Town last Tuesday. The North-East side won the game 1-0, but were found guilty of fielding an ineligible player in captain Adam Nicholson, who should have been suspended for the fixture. After several days of deliberation, the NPL eventually ruled in favour of Gusieley, reinstating them into the play-offs in time for the Bank Holiday Monday final at Worksop. With home advantage after coming second in the regular season, Worksop started the brighter of the two sides, Liam Hughes flashing an early header wide. At the other end, Gabriel Johnson forced a save out of Tommy Taylor, while Prince Ekpolo cut inside and fired over the bar. Gabriel Johnson came close to giving Guiseley an early lead on what proved to be a devastating afternoon for them. (Image: The Yorkshire Photographer) The game burst into life just before the break, with Will Longbottom clearing a Worksop effort off the line, before the striker almost headed home at the other end. Adriano Moke then blazed Ollie Brown's cut back over the bar for the visitors, which proved costly as Worksop took the lead right on half-time, Jordan Burrow powering home a Joe Leesley set-piece. The home side doubled their lead 10 minutes into the second half, Joe Cracknell making a cracking initial save after Ben Grist's throw-in caused problems, only for Burrow to head the rebound into the net. Guiseley's fans travelled in good numbers to Worksop, especially as their side only got reinstated in the play-offs on Saturday, but they must have known it was not going to be their day when Worksop went 2-0 up. (Image: The Yorkshire Photographer) Jake Lawlor and Lewis Whitham both had shots that went agonisingly wide for Guiseley, before the latter played through Longbottom, who halved the deficit after keeping his composure when in on goal. Taylor made a good late save from Whitham and Longbottom curled a shot over the bar in second-half stoppage-time as Guiseley failed to find an equaliser, meaning their season ended in heartbreaking fashion.

Stockton Town respond to play-off heartbreak with review & 'exciting plans' promised
STOCKTON Town have apologised for the "administrative error" that led to the Anchors being kicked out of the Northern Premier League Premier Division play-offs. And the club say they will be fuelled by their heartbreaking end to the season and come back stronger, promising some "exciting plans" for the future. Stockton were due to be playing Worksop on Monday for a place in National League North next season but were ejected from the play-offs after fielding an ineligible player in last week's semi-final victory over Guiseley, who took their place in the final. Captain Adam Nicholson was sent off on the final day of the regular season but played against Guiseley, with Stockton saying their understanding was that his suspension wasn't due to start until Saturday, May 3. They were charged by the FA before attending two hearings. It was then decided by the league over the weekend that Stockton wouldn't be allowed to play in the final. RECOMMENDED READING: Stockton then released a fresh and lengthy statement on Monday morning, saying: "Stockton Town Football Club has this week found itself in a difficult position which arose out of an administrative error due to a complex chain of events. "We admit that this shouldn't have happened and apologise to our players, management, supporters and the wider community of Stockton that we have been left in the position of being disqualified from the end of season play-offs. "The club shall review and reflect on the causes of this and we are committed to act on findings to ensure as a club we improve and never again end up in this position. "The club would like to place on record its sincere thanks to all that hold this club close to their heart for their understanding, support and commitment to the club over the past week and we are truly humbled by all your messages of support." Stockton have enjoyed a remarkable rise over the course of the last decade and club bosses have vowed to learn from this week's setback and continue their upward trajectory. The statement continued: "Stockton Town Football Club has grown out of adversity and has experienced many difficult days over the years but we have never let any of those define us, and the events of the last week will be another of those. "We have exciting plans for the future and we believe a future that can bring further success and pride to our club and community, but this will only be achieved with the whole club pulling in the same direction. "The club is already well advanced with its plans for the 2025/26 season and we hope to be in a position to begin to share news of those plans coming to fruition in the next few weeks. "Finally we would like to wish both Worksop Town and Guiseley our best wishes for the play-off Final, may the best team win."
