Karnataka: Four held after Hindutva outfit members attacked for breaking into cattle owner's home

Four persons were arrested in Karnataka's Belagavi district on Monday for allegedly assaulting members of a Hindutva group after they reportedly intercepted a vehicle transporting cows and later forcibly entered the home of the cattle's owner, The Indian Express reported. Belagavi Superintendent of Police Bhimashankar Guled told the newspaper that those who were assaulted were members of the Sri Rama Sene. 'While Sri Rama Sene activists broke the law by barging into a house without permission, some villagers did the same by assaulting them,' Guled said. The police took cognisance of the case after a video of the incident, which took place last week, was shared on social media, PTI reported. The video purportedly shows five men being tied to a tree and attacked by a group. The police said that on June 26, members of the Sri Rama Sene stopped a vehicle, alleging that it was transporting cattle for slaughter. They later took the driver to a police station, where he maintained that the cows were being taken for dairy and taming purposes, The Indian Express reported. The cows were later taken to a cattle shelter. On June 28, members of the outfit allegedly barged into the house of Babasav Ramjan Multani, the cattle owner, after he brought the cows back from the shelter. Only women were reportedly present inside the home at the time. An unidentified police officer told The Indian Express that the villagers mistook the men for thieves and assaulted them. However, Sri Rama Sene leader Vithal Gaddi claimed that five of the outfit's members were attacked when they tried to stop the illegal transportation of cattle. Villagers, meanwhile, have claimed that the assault was unrelated to cattle transport and that the members had allegedly '', PTI reported.

Four arrested in assault on Sri Ram Sene activists; police say both sides at fault

Belagavi: Yamakanmaradi police arrested four individuals on Monday in connection with an assault on five persons, said to be Sri Ram Sene activists, at Ingalagi village of Hukkeri taluk on Saturday. The victims were allegedly tied to a coconut tree and beaten by locals. The incident came to light after a video of the assault went viral on social media the following day. Addressing a press conference on Monday, SP Bhimashankar Guled stated that the police took suo motu cognizance of the incident after the video surfaced, as no formal complaint was filed by the victims. Complex background of the case According to SP Guled, one of the five victims, Mahaveer Solapure, is a known rowdy-sheeter previously externed from Belagavi and currently residing in Kalaburagi, intercepted a vehicle transporting four cows on June 26, allegedly posing as gaurakshaks. Owner of the cows, Babajan Multani, reportedly presented valid documents, proving he purchased the cows for dairy purposes. The matter was briefly handled at the Yamakanmaradi police station, and the cows were temporarily sent to a local goshala. After being convinced of the legitimacy of the transport, the five individuals submitted a letter to the police stating they did not wish to pursue the case. However, on June 28, when Multani went to retrieve his cows from the goushala, the same individuals allegedly intercepted the vehicle again. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Perdagangkan CFD Emas dengan Broker Tepercaya IC Markets Mendaftar Undo Following a brief confrontation, they left the vehicle but then reportedly followed it to Ingalagi village. While Multani was away from home, the group entered his residence, frightening the women and children present inside. Their unannounced entry led to panic, leading villagers to detain and assault them, tying them to coconut trees. Legal stand: 'Both sides committed offences' SP Guled said that entering a private residence without permission constitutes a legal offence. Similarly, physically assaulting individuals by taking the law into one's own hands is also punishable. "Since both parties were involved in unlawful acts, neither came forward to file a complaint," he explained. Despite this, police arrested four individuals from the village after verifying the assault through video evidence. Separately, a complaint was filed by a vehicle driver, Shivaputra Sanadi, whose vehicle was intercepted by the same group earlier. SP Guled confirmed that legal action is being taken under appropriate provisions. No communal angle Issuing clarification over media speculation, SP Guled said that of the four arrested individuals, one is a Hindu and three are Muslims, and no communal motive was involved. "Unfortunately, some social media channels tried to portray the incident as Muslims attacking gaurakshaks but this was purely a case of public outrage triggered by fear and trespassing — not a Hindu-Muslim issue," he said. The SP also raised concerns about the misuse of organisational identity. He said Sri Ram Sene should clarify if the rowdy sheeter is a member or misusing the organisation's name. In that case, they should register a complaint with the police, he said.

Silk Route brought various cultures together, says author

The ancient Silk Route that connected the Roman Empire with China was not merely a road that facilitated transportation of goods but it also was a channel for exchange of cultures, author and retired IPS officer D.V. Guruprasad said in Belagavi on Tuesday. 'The Silk Route was not just a road. It was an organic being. It led to the growth of informed civilizations that assimilated languages and cultures that were alien to each other. It acted as a chain that held various land masses and cultures together,' he said. He was speaking at a function to release his 100th book, Silk Route, in Kannada, and an interaction with readers at the Belgaum Club. He described the book as a historical non-fiction work and not a travelogue. 'I have tried to cover historical facts that tend to have an influence on our modern life,' he said. He said that he is working on five more books, including a detailed work on drug lord Pablo Escobar. 'All the five books will be released at once in June this year,' he said. He said that he was fascinated by stories of the Silk Route since his childhood. 'I began reading all the books about it. They included The Silk Road by Peter Frankopan, I Xanadu by William Dalrymple, Colin Thubron's Shadow of the Silk Road, and Ten Thousand Miles Without a Cloud by Sun Shuyun,' he said. He said that he prepared for writing the book for over a decade, of which he travelled two years. 'In preparing to write the book, I travelled to all the 40 countries on the Silk Route, except four. I met scholars, historians and even common people from these countries. I will go back and visit the four countries that I left out in the first leg of my research tour once the political conditions improve. I plan to write a sequel,' he said. He said that he has ended the book saying how the world learnt important lessons on spirituality, culture, science, trade and agriculture and how it (Silk Route) has been a teacher of the world in the past. 'My research on the osmosis of Buddhism from India to the world made me curious enough to consider writing a book on spirituality,' Dr. Guruprasad said. Superintendent of Police Bheemashankar S. Guled introduced the book. He described it as a treasure trove of stories that tries to capture a brief history of over 3,000 years in its 235 pages. Dr. Guled engaged with young readers in the crowd by asking them questions about the Silk Route and the ancient civilisations of Asia and Europe and read out answers from the pages of the book. Dr Guled said that the Silk Route read like a racy thriller but educated the readers as well. 'The reader is transformed into a time traveller who moves from China to Rome and back. It describes kings, merchants, commoners and even highwaymen,' he said. Vice-Chancellor of Rani Channamma University C.M. Thyagaraj said that the book can help arose the curiosity of today's youth who have almost given up reading books. He appreciated the author's use innovative language. 'The book raises and answers several questions like, how was the Silk Route in the past, how is it now, what remains of it now? What was the life of the people like then and how it has changed now? It is history for the layman, presented in simple and engrossing language,' Dr. Thyagaraj said. Commandant of the Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre Brigadier Joydip Mukherjee released the book. He gave examples of books by various authors on history and international relations. He said that such works in Indian languages will lead to better research and publication of interesting material. M.K. Jainapur, who has bought the first copy of every book by Dr. Guruprasad, received an autographed copy of the book. The readers observed a one-minute silence in honour of Ramakant Joshi of Manohara Grantha Mala, Dharwad-based publisher of the book. The event was organised by Belagavi Geleyara Balaga, World on Wheels and Belgaum 360. BELAGAVI: The Karnataka Police has deployed security personnel at the residence of Colonel Sofiya Qureshi's in-laws after a misleading post on social media falsely claimed that the house was attacked and demolished. Belagavi superintendent of police (SP) Bhimashankar Guled said security personnel were deployed at the house linked to Col Qureshi - one of the two women officers who briefed the nation on Operation Sindoor - as a precautionary measure after a social media post on X was spotted by the district police team. 'After our district social media monitoring cell replied to him that it was false, he deleted the post,' Guled said. The district police chief said the user who put out the incorrect information was identified as Anis Hudeen who reportedly lived in Canada.
