Months after Ram Charan-starrer Game Changer flopped, Karthik Subbaraj says Shankar changed his story, screenplay: ‘My story was about…'

Filmmaker-writer Karthik Subbaraj, who once was extremely grateful to Shankar for letting him be part of his big vision in Ram Charan's Game Changer, now claims the story of the film was completely different from what he suggested. Karthik Subbaraj, known for writing-directing commercial hits like Pizza, Jigarthanda franchise, and Petta among others, is also the man who was credited with Game Changer's storyline. However, now months after the film's box office disaster, the filmmaker has indirectly refused to take the blame, claiming the script and story of the film were massively changed after other people's involvement. In a recent interview with Galatta Tamil, Karthik said, 'I gave an outline of the story–a one liner. What I had shared was about a very grounded IAS officer who becomes a politician. When I gave the story to Shankar sir, I was so excited to see how he would make it bigger. So that was the world introduced by me. However, it eventually became a whole different world' He explained that after he shared his story with the Indian filmmaker a lot of other people got involved in it. 'There were a lot of people, a lot of writers. The screenplay has been changed a lot. The story has also changed a little bit.' The Jigarthanda Double X writer-director hinted that this is not the story that he shared initially. However, he soon added, 'You can never define a phenomenon that will work for films. No one can say why this film didn't connect with the audience.' In November last year, post the film's teaser release, Karthik expressed his happiness and shared with 'I am so happy to see my story through Shankar sir's vision. I am really honoured that I got to be part of the film. The teaser looked very exciting. It is a surreal moment to see my name in Shankar sir's film. I grew up watching Shankar sir's film and always adored him as a filmmaker. So to see my name as a story writer in his film, it is a great feeling.' Karthik had even praised the filmmaker a day after Game Changer's release. He wrote on X, 'Game Changer was super entertaining with vintage Shankar Sir's grand mass action vibes and political punches.' He added, 'Thank you Shankar sir for letting me be a little part of your big vision.' Many are now criticising Karthik for shifting the blame, and not objecting earlier if at all the storyline was different from what he suggested. Ram Charan's Game Changer, which witnessed multiple delays before its release, was supposed to be his grand comeback film post the success of RRR. However, post its release on Pongal, the film failed to resonate with the audience. Made on a whopping budget of Rs 450 crore with about Rs 75 crore only spent on the film's songs, Game Changer earned just Rs 178 crore at the box office.
