Star Awards 2025: Chantalle Ng thanks fellow host Guo Liang for saving the day when she blanked out on stage
One thing we love about Chantalle Ng is how she has no qualms calling herself out. All eyes were on the 30-year-old Mediacorp actress when she hosted last Sunday's (Jul 6) Star Awards with Guo Liang. She was poised and expressive, her efforts were very applaudable for someone with zero hosting experience. In fact, we didn't even notice Ng had an 'oops' moment on stage until she pointed it out herself on social media. Ng and Liang were supposed to introduce the presenters for the Best Drama Serial award. Guo Liang started with: "Our next guests are all A-listers. They're the Ah Ge Ah Jies everyone's familiar with. They are..." It is assumed that Ng was supposed to finish Guo Liang's sentence by naming Zoe Tay, Li Nanxing and Fann Wong. But for some reason, Ng says she blanked out and didn't say anything. Thankfully, Guo Liang quickly caught on to what was happening and completed the sentence. Though that moment lasted less than a second, it left a deep enough impression on Ng. "When your co-host blanks out and forgets to announce the presenters, this is how Liang Ge saves the day," the actress wrote on her Instagram story. She also added an embarrassed smiling emoji. We think she's being too hard on herself. We're also not the only ones who think Ng deserves a pat on her back for her performance that night. Singaporean voice actor Zhang Miaoyang, who is a vocal coach at Chinese TV station Phoenix Television as well as the Chairman of the Hong Kong Language Arts Association, took to social media to praise Ng's hosting abilities. "Her Mandarin pronunciation, fluency in the language as well as her elegance and gracefulness caught our eyes. On top of acting, she's definitely a rising star in radio and hosting too," effused Zhang.

Netizens call Star Awards 2025 a 'trainwreck' despite star-studded night
Star Awards 2025 may have drawn a full house to the Theatre at Mediacorp last night (July 6), but it was the show's on-screen chaos rather than the celebrity glitz that got viewers talking. Despite being the 30th anniversary of the Star Awards, which honours achievements in local Mandarin television, the production was widely panned in a Reddit thread that quickly gained traction and hundreds of comments. Users called the show a "hosting and floor management nightmare", with some labelling it a "glorified D&D" for Mediacorp staff. Chantalle Ng 'truly dreadful' Much of the criticism was directed at co-host and actress Chantalle Ng, 30, who was accused of being unprofessional and overly focused on herself. "She was truly dreadful, sorry to say," one Reddit user wrote. "She has serious main character syndrome." Another commented: "Which host screams into the mic 'my friend!!!' when announcing an award?" Viewers also felt veteran host Guo Liang, 54, had to work overtime to carry the show. While he kept a steady hand, his attempts to build chemistry with Ng were seen as awkward, with one user declaring the pair simply had "no rapport." Acceptance speeches cut short Others pointed out that the show ran under time by about seven minutes, even after multiple winners had their acceptance speeches abruptly cut short. Among them was Jim Lim, winner for Best Theme Song, whose microphone was muted midway through his thank-you speech. "The poor bloke was just trying to blabber his thank-you speech away without realising he was muted. I just felt so mad for him," a viewer wrote. "On the bright side, I got curious and searched for that song. What an amazing gem of a song!" The show, which featured Hong Kong superstars Chow Yun Fat, 70, and Jessica Hsuan, 54, as presenters, ran for just under three hours. Hsuan also picked up a Best Actress award, which some online felt was a strange fit for a local television prize. Awkward camera angles There was also criticism of the way the production was filmed, including abrupt switches, awkward angles, and failed attempts to capture reaction shots. One user remarked: "I've seen high school plays with better production value." Despite the missteps, some fans found humour in the chaos. "It's entertaining yearly for our family precisely because it's always a trainwreck," said one Redditor. Others were more critical: "Star Awards 2025 should just be renamed the Christopher Lee Awards," wrote one user, referring to the actor's repeated wins over the years. There were also murmurs of dissatisfaction over perceived favouritism and lack of recognition for new talent. A beloved institution Nevertheless, there were positive comments about the awards show, which first began in 1994. Some left encouraging comments on Chantalle's Instagram page, with one saying: "I'm surprised that you can host well too. So proud of you!" Suggestions from netizens ranged from extending the show by 30 minutes to moving the 10pm news to a later timeslot. "Korea lets award shows run into the night. But here, we rush the biggest show of the year just to make way for the news," one commenter said. Still, for all its stumbles, the Star Awards remains one of the few annual events dedicated to celebrating local TV. As one viewer dryly put it, "I'm more surprised there are people still watching this." The New Paper has reached out to Mediacorp for comment, but did not receive a response by press time.

'Give the award to me first': Marcus Chin says suspense in Star Awards' top 10 popularity awards is bad for his weak heart, Entertainment News
Local DJ-host Marcus Chin made a special request to the Star Awards team after bagging his fifth Top 10 Most Popular Male Artistes Award last evening (July 6): Please take into consideration his weak heart. Speaking to local media including AsiaOne backstage after the ceremony, the 70-year-old shared: "I wasn't confident about winning this year, especially since our radio show didn't win [Best Radio Programme] also. "We had won for four consecutive years, but The Shuang, Kunz and Jia Trio won this year, so I was quite dejected already and thought this could perhaps be a sign that I wouldn't win Top 10." Marcus hosts Love 972's radio show The Breakfast Quartet with DJs Mark Lee, Dennis Chew and Chen Biyu on weekdays. The team won Best Radio Programme for four consecutive years from 2021 to 2024. The Shuang, Kunz and Jia Trio is a radio show hosted by Yes 933 DJs Kenneth Chung, Hazelle Teo and Chen Qijia. Marcus expressed his appreciation for his family, friends and fans who voted for him. He added: "I still have five more times to win [before achieving the All-Time Favourite Artiste award]. I had a heart attack on Oct 7 last year. I hope if I still win next year, give the award to me first and not let me wait six, seven or eight in line, because I could really feel my heart rate increasing as I was waiting to be called." Marcus was the seventh artiste to be announced as a Top 10 recipient last evening. As he went onstage, he got a selfie with veteran Hong Kong actor Chow Yun Fat, 70, who presented the award. Romeo Tan receives final Top 10 trophy after 15 years in showbiz Besides Marcus, the other recipients for the category are Yes 933 DJ Jeff Goh, as well as actors Xu Bin, Benjamin Tan, Zong Zijie, Desmond Tan, Richie Koh, Guo Liang, Jeremy Chan and Romeo Tan, with the latter clinching his 10th award after 15 years in showbiz. This means he will receive the All-Time Favourite Artiste award in the next Star Awards ceremony. Romeo, 40, who had to cut his speech short during the show, said backstage: "I definitely want to thank my family, relatives and friends, thank you for voting for me every year. I also want to thank myself. I started as an audience member, became a small-time actor and later a full-time actor. "To be able to stand on stage now and receive my 10th Top 10 award to become an All-Time Favourite Artiste, it's quite an unbelievable journey for me. I am really happy that I still have a group of people who support me and thank you to the audience for liking my shows." View this post on Instagram A post shared by R O M E O T A N (@romeotan) Guo Liang felt 'rollercoaster' of emotions throughout the evening Veteran host Guo Liang, who received a hug from Yun Fat as he received his ninth Top 10 trophy, shared that his "emotions were like a rollercoaster" throughout the show. The 54-year-old, who debuted in local showbiz in 1994, said: "I was anxious at first, as many of my friends and family have supported me and I hoped to win. While hosting the show, I was awestruck by Yun Fat... "Then disappointment hit me when I saw those who had already received the All-Time Favourite Artiste award. Most artistes from my batch had already reached that status and I believed that [I haven't] because I didn't do well enough. "When I finally received the Top 10 award tonight, it was nothing but pure joy and elation. Such an experience is not great... For my last win, please help me out everyone."
