Shivamogga DC directs probe on SC/ST atrocity cases

Shivamogga Deputy Commissioner (DC) Gurudatta Hegde has instructed the district officers of the Social Welfare Department to collect data about the atrocity cases against people belonging to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) communities in which police have not filed the charge sheet within 60 days of registering them. In a review meeting of the district awareness and monitoring committee for SC/ST atrocities in Shivamogga on Friday, the DC took exception to the delay in filing charge sheets in cases related to atrocities committed on people belonging to the SC/ST communities. He directed the Social Welfare Department officials to collect details of such cases and present the status in the next meeting. The DC instructed the officials to send a proposal to the government seeking funds to provide compensation for the victims in the atrocity cases. Further, taking note of teenage pregnancies among SC-ST communities, the DC said that the district-level officers had been entrusted with the responsibility to stop child marriages. Along with the officers, leaders of the community need to spread awareness among the people to stop child marriages. Shivamogga SP G.K. Mithun Kumar stated that the police would take measures to file charge sheets in atrocity cases within the stipulated time. The conviction rate is only 3% in atrocity cases. A majority of the cases failed to be proved in court due to lack of evidence. Deputy Director of the Social Welfare Department Malleshappa, members of the committee, and district-level officers were present at the meeting.

Strap in for a sky-high rush: Karnataka's Jog Falls to get 460m zipline ride for thrill-seekers - here's when tourists can experience the ride

BENGALURU: After years of waiting, the adrenaline rush of soaring over one of Karnataka's most iconic waterfalls is finally within reach. Shivamogga district's Jog Management Authority (JMA) has revived plans to introduce a zipline at Jog Falls as part of an ambitious tourism-development drive. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Officials say it could be operational in just three months. First proposed in 2020, the zipline project was stalled by the pandemic and a slew of site improvements under Jog Falls comprehensive management plan, a Rs 130-crore makeover to enhance tourist experience. Now, with a tender floated to rope in an operator, the dream of gliding across the misty gorge is close to becoming a reality. Officials say the zipline will stretch approximately 460m — starting near the entry gate of Yatri Nivas and landing at view deck 2. It promises visitors a bird's-eye view of the cascade below. 'Work is under way at view deck 2 and will be completed soon. Once ongoing work is completed, the successful bidder will get a work order to operate the zipline,' said a tourism department official. JMA has invited bids from agencies, and the contract will go to the highest bidder quoting more than Rs 45 lakh. The winning agency will get rights to operate and maintain the zipline for three years, with the possibility of a two-year extension depending on service. The daily adventure will end by 6.30pm, and ticket pricing will be decided by the Shivamogga deputy commissioner, who is also CEO of JMA. The service provider will be responsible for obtaining identification and documentationfrom tourists, including Form C from foreigners, and submitting them to the local police station. They will also be held liable for any untoward incidents and must pay compensation if necessary. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now JMA has also set strict behavioural norms. Any proven case of misbehaviour with tourists will attract a Rs 10,000 fine, and repeated violations — more than three — will result in cancellation of the licence. 'If any staff member of the operator is found drunk while on the job, a fine of Rs 10,000 will be imposed,' the official said. The same penalty applies if an intoxicated tourist is allowed to take a ride. The physical structure for the zipline has long been in place, but its readiness must be confirmed through safety checks before adventure seekers can take flight. 'We will conduct a safety audit of the zipline structure and will repair or alter it if required before beginning operations. We may start zipline activities in the next three months,' said Gurudatta Hegde, deputy commissioner of Shivamogga.

Hosanagara tahsildar issues notice to Kantara: The Legend Part -1 production team

Hosanagara tahsildar issued a notice on Monday to the production team of Kantara: The Legend – Part 1 in view of the media reports about a mishap during the shooting of the movie at the backwaters of Mani Dam in Hosanagara taluk. The tahsildar asked the production team to submit details about the incident along with all relevant records within three days. The officer warned the production team that he would recommend senior officers cancel permission to shoot the film at the spot if it failed to respond within the stipulated time. A part of the set used to shoot the movie in the backwaters collapsed during heavy rains on June 14. There were reports that many people, including Rishab Shetty, the director of the movie, were at the spot when the incident occurred. However, a production executive told reporters on Sunday that a set of a ship placed as a backdrop collapsed due to wind, and nobody was hurt in the incident. The notice was issued as per the directions of Deputy Commissioner Gurudatta Hegde.
