Oman steps up diplomatic push to ease regional tensions

Muscat – Oman has intensified its diplomatic efforts to contain the ongoing escalation in the region and prevent the spread of tensions triggered by repeated Israeli aggression. These efforts are guided by Oman's consistent foreign policy approach, which is rooted in constructive dialogue, adherence to international law, and the pursuit of peaceful solutions as the cornerstone of regional security and stability. Reflecting its strategic vision and credibility as a trusted mediator, Oman participated in the 48th Extraordinary Session of the GCC Ministerial Council, held on Monday. H E Sayyid Badr al Busaidi, Foreign Minister, led the sultanate's delegation at the session, which was convened to address the rapidly evolving regional developments. In a joint statement issued following the meeting, the GCC condemned the Israeli attacks on Iranian territory, describing them as a clear violation of national sovereignty and international law. The Council called for urgent de-escalation and the resumption of diplomatic negotiations. The statement also commended Oman's ongoing efforts to facilitate dialogue, particularly on the Iranian nuclear file, which remains a critical component of regional stability. In parallel with the Council's deliberations, H E Sayyid Badr continued intensive telephone consultations with counterparts from several countries, as well as key international stakeholders. These included discussions with Kaja Kallas, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission. The consultations focused on aligning international positions and strengthening political and legal pressure to immediately halt Israeli attacks. They also explored avenues to revive comprehensive negotiations aimed at restoring regional stability and averting the risks of further military escalation.

Israel's attack threat to regional stability: Oman

Muscat – Israel's unilateral attack on Iran is 'illegal, unjustifiable and a grave threat to regional stability', H E Sayyid Badr al Busaidi, Foreign Minister has said. 'I condemn it and urge the global community to come together to reject Israeli aggression and support de-escalation and diplomacy with one voice,' he wrote on X. H E Sayyid Badr also had a series of phone calls with his counterparts across the region and the globe on Saturday, as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to contain the dangerous military escalation and tensions in the region triggered by Israel's direct attacks on Iranian territory since the early hours of Friday morning, the Foreign Ministry stated. During the calls, H E Sayyid Badr emphasised the importance of halting the aggression and deterring the aggressor through peaceful means, based on international law and justice, in order to prevent further bloodshed, destruction, and loss of life, and to safeguard the security, stability, and the interests of the region and its peoples. Oman condemns Earlier on Friday, the Foreign Ministry expressed the Sultanate of Oman's strong condemnation of the brutal military aggression launched by Israel against the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which targeted sovereign facilities and caused casualties. 'Oman considers this action a dangerous and reckless escalation that constitutes a flagrant violation of the United Nations Charter and the principles of international law. It also represents unacceptable and ongoing aggressive behaviour that undermines the foundations of stability in the region,' the Foreign Ministry said. This attack comes at a highly sensitive time, as international efforts to resume nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States were intensifying. 'This clearly reveals a deliberate intent to obstruct the diplomatic process and ignite a wider conflict that will have dire consequences for regional and international peace.' While Oman held Israel responsible for the escalation and its repercussions, it called on the international community to take a clear and firm stance to halt this dangerous approach, 'which threatens to preclude diplomatic solutions and to undermine the security and stability of the region'. The Foreign Ministry reiterated Oman's firm position that 'security is not built through aggression, but rather through dialogue and peaceful means.

Dialogue key to ending conflict: Sayyid Badr

Muscat – H E Sayyid Badr al Busaidi, Foreign Minister, called for urgent and sustained dialogue on Sunday to address the worsening situation in Palestine, warning against continued violence and the failure of the international community to act decisively. Speaking at the Tehran Dialogue Forum, H E Sayyid Badr reaffirmed Oman's strong ties with the Islamic Republic of Iran and expressed gratitude to Iranian Foreign Minister Dr Abbas Araghchi for the invitation to participate. 'The Sultanate of Oman attaches great importance to its distinguished relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran,' he said, acknowledging Araghchi's role in promoting regional and international dialogue with 'candour, precision and flexibility'. H E Sayyid Badr used the platform to focus on what he described as one of the region's most pressing challenges — the Palestinian issue. 'The violence and genocide that the Palestinian people continue to endure is a global tragedy – one that should never have been allowed to occur,' he said. 'It could have been prevented had the opportunities for dialogue been seized.' He said that since the assassination of Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin in 1995, the Palestinians had been left without a credible partner for dialogue, blaming successive Israeli governments for rejecting serious engagement. He also criticised the international community for failing to exert 'meaningful pressure' to initiate a genuine peace process, while pointing out the damaging role played by actors who imposed rigid preconditions for engagement. 'What has given me some hope and optimism in recent months,' H E Sayyid Badr noted, 'is the emergence of signs pointing towards a possible shift in approach from Washington.' Referring to recent developments, he said the United States may be exploring a 'more pragmatic and flexible stance' on potential dialogue partners, citing comments from a senior Hamas official who claimed there had been contact with Washington. 'This suggests that even at a time of horrific destruction, there is a renewed appetite for dialogue – one we all recognise as essential, even if Tel Aviv continues to try to avoid it by escalating militarily on multiple fronts,' he said. He expressed confidence that US President Donald Trump could help bring about peace. H E Sayyid Badr acknowledged the difficulties of diplomatic engagement but warned against the consequences of avoiding dialogue. 'Gaza stands as a terrible lesson in what happens when people lack the courage to speak to one another,' he said. He concluded by reaffirming Oman's commitment to diplomacy. 'We remain firmly committed to the difficult path of dialogue – including with those we may deeply disagree with,' he said, expressing hope that the Tehran forum would help strengthen international resolve for peaceful solutions.
