Hong Kong have finally made it to the Rugby World Cup – now the real work begins
Hong Kong's men made history in Incheon on Saturday, qualifying for the Rugby World Cup for the first time – now the real work begins. Advertisement A 70-22 victory over South Korea sealed a sixth consecutive Asia Rugby Emirates Men's Championship title and booked a spot at the global tournament in Australia in 2027. Hong Kong will be only the second team from Asia to play in the World Cup after ever-present qualifiers Japan, who have already qualified for 2027 after finishing third in their pool at the 2023 tournament in France. The 10 tries Hong Kong scored at the Incheon Namdong Asiad Rugby Stadium, after they ran in 12 against Sri Lanka two weeks ago, took the team's total to 28 for the championship, underscoring the gulf that exists between the side and their regional rivals. Once again they came from forwards and backs, with the former having the upper hand in the rout. Alex Post, the hooker, and Josh Hrstich, who started the game at No 8, scored a brace each, while James Sawyer and Luke van der Smit also crossed. Hong Kong captain Josh Hrstich scored two tries in his team's 10-try haul. Ex-England Sevens star Simon Amor returning to Hong Kong to take up performance role
Former England Sevens star Simon Amor is returning for a second stint with Hong Kong, after being appointed as the new executive director of performance and representative rugby. The 46-year-old briefly took charge of the senior men's side in June 2021 as interim head coach ahead of the Covid-delayed Asia Rugby Championship, leaving six months later to become technical director of Japan's Sevens programme. Amor, who worked as the attack coach for the England XV's side when Eddie Jones was in charge, joins with Hong Kong preparing for the most important six weeks in the team's history. A place at the men's 2027 World Cup awaits the winners of this year's championship, and Amor is expected to be at Hong Kong's first game, away to the United Arab Emirates on June 14. Amor's remit will also include guiding the women's bid to qualify for the XVs World Cup, and helping both sevens squads try to reach an Olympic Games. 'I am delighted to be returning to Hong Kong China Rugby at an incredibly exciting time in the organisation's proud history,' Amor said in a statement released by HKCR.

Hong Kong's high-stakes June rugby match to take place at Kai Tak Sports Park
Hong Kong's match against Sri Lanka in the Asia Rugby Emirates Men's Championship next month is to be held at Kai Tak Youth Sports Ground, the city's union has confirmed. Advertisement The fixture at Kai Tak Sports Park's secondary stadium will take place on Sunday June 22 as Hong Kong look to defend their title in the four-team round-robin tournament, having won the past five editions. The team will play two away fixtures either side of it, with the first against the United Arab Emirates on June 13 and the second against South Korea on July 5. Sri Lanka qualified for the tournament thanks to an impressive 59-19 win against Malaysia in April. Hong Kong China Rugby (HKCR) CEO James Farndon said it was important for the representative teams to play matches at the sports park, which opened in March and has already hosted the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens. 'With Hong Kong boasting a new world-class sports facility, like many sports associations, we are excited about the quality and scale of future events we can deliver at Kai Tak Sports Park,' he said.
