Sabah records highest agricultural holdings in Malaysia

SOOK: The interim report of the 2024 Agriculture Census shows that Sabah recorded the highest number of agricultural holdings in Malaysia, with a total of 159,259. Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup said the agricultural holdings refer to the number of individuals or organisations engaged in the agricultural sector, with Sabah's interior zone, comprising the districts of Keningau, Sook, Nabawan, Tambunan and Tenom, accounting for 26 per cent of the state's total agricultural holdings. "This number is expected to increase further given the vast potential of undeveloped agricultural land in the interior areas," he said when launching the Road to National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day (HPPNK) 2025 Series 2 here today. In response to this development, he said the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry, through its various agencies, has stepped up efforts to boost the agricultural sector in the interior areas. "These efforts include the establishment of the Sook Area Farmers' Organisation (PPK); setting up a coffee processing facility in Sapulut, Nabawan; restoring padi fields in Tulid; and cultivating taro and onions in Sook. "We are also working to introduce high market-potential crops such as MD2 pineapples," he said. Arthur said the federal government, together with the state government, remains committed to strengthening the agricultural sector through policy planning, technical support programmes and rural infrastructure investments to continuously enhance agri-food productivity. "As the lead agency for agri-food marketing services in the country, the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) plays a key role in strengthening the agri-food security chain by focusing on accessibility and affordability for consumers, supply availability, as well as usage stability and sustainability," he said. He said that last year, Sabah Fama was allocated RM13.8 million for the implementation of 313 projects and programmes, benefiting over 29,000 entrepreneurs and contributing to sales worth RM83 million. "With the upgrading of tamu (rural markets), strengthening of retail outlet networks, and strategic engagement with farmers and operators at the grassroots level, Fama is confident that Sabah can become one of the key pillars in the national food security agenda," he added. Commenting on the Road to HPPNK 2025 programme, he said it serves as a platform to recognise the contributions and roles of farmers, breeders and fishermen in developing the national agri-food sector. "HPPNK held here in Sook is our final series before the national-level HPPNK 2025, which is scheduled to take place from Aug 1 to 3 in Kota Kinabalu. "This year is especially meaningful as we celebrate 50 years of HPPNK. "What makes it even more special is that the national-level HPPNK celebration returns to Sabah after 30 years. "The last time Sabah hosted the event was in 1995," he said. – Bernama

Sabah leads Malaysia in agricultural holdings with 159,259 farms

SOOK: Sabah has emerged as the state with the highest number of agricultural holdings in Malaysia, recording 159,259 farms according to the 2024 Agriculture Census interim report. Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup highlighted that the interior zone—comprising Keningau, Sook, Nabawan, Tambunan, and Tenom—accounts for 26% of the state's total agricultural activity. 'The number is expected to rise given the vast potential of undeveloped land in these areas,' he said during the launch of the Road to National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day (HPPNK) 2025 Series 2. To support growth, the ministry has introduced initiatives such as the Sook Area Farmers' Organisation (PPK), a coffee processing facility in Sapulut, and high-value crop cultivation like MD2 pineapples. Arthur emphasized the federal and state governments' commitment to strengthening agriculture through policy planning, technical support, and infrastructure investments. The Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) has been pivotal, with Sabah FAMA receiving RM13.8 million in 2024 for 313 projects, benefiting 29,000 entrepreneurs and generating RM83 million in sales. The upcoming national-level HPPNK 2025 in Kota Kinabalu marks 50 years of the event, with Sabah hosting for the first time in three decades. 'This celebration recognises the vital role of farmers, breeders, and fishermen in national food security,' Arthur added. - Bernama

TAWAU: This year's National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day (HPPNK) celebration is especially significant as it will be held in Sabah for the first time in 30 years – the last time being in 1995. Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM), Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup, said the State has been chosen as the host of the event, which will take place at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) in Kota Kinabalu from Aug 1 to 3, and is expected to be officiated by the Prime Minister. Advertisement 'This year marks the 50th anniversary of HPPNK with the theme 'Kudrat Kami Menjamin Pertiwi' (Our Strength Secures the Nation),' he said during a press conference after launching the Road To HPPNK @ Tawau event at Dataran Tawau Municipal Council (MPT), last Saturday. He said the two-day pre-event in Tawau is expected to attract some 20,000 visitors, generate an estimated RM100,000 in transactions, and feature seven exhibition booths, 12 Agro Madani sales stalls and 40 entrepreneur booths. Arthur said that the event serves as a platform to bring the government closer to Sabah's agro community – especially farmers, breeders, and fishermen who are crucial to ensuring national food security. Tawau was chosen as the first stop for the roadshow due to its strong potential in agriculture, fisheries and livestock sectors, as well as its strategic location, which allows easy access for visitors from Lahad Datu, Semporna and Kunak. In conjunction with the launch, Arthur presented eight mock cheques, including RM921,600 for the 2025 Fishermen's Cost of Living Allowance (ESHN) in Tawau; RM300,000 for B40 Fishermen Housing Aid in Tawau; RM50,000 for the Community Fishermen Facilities Development Grant in Kampung Tanjung Batu Laut, Tawau; RM34,000 for Fishing Equipment Assistance (Touch Point) in Tawau; and allocations under the Small and Medium Machinery Ownership Programme for PPK Kalabakan (RM26,882.80), PPK Tawau (RM9,289.70), PPK Kunak (RM39,294.80), and PPK Lahad Datu (RM9,954). Earlier, Arthur also flagged off the Road To HPPNK 2025 Motor Convoy, which will travel across several districts in Sabah including Sandakan, Nabawan, Keningau, Papar, and Kota Kinabalu before culminating at SICC. The convoy features 30 participants, including officers, staff from LKIM Sabah, youth members of Kubena (Fishermen Youth Group), and members of fishermen associations across the State. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? PUTRAJAYA: The National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day (HPPNK) 2025 celebration will take place at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, from Aug 1 to 3. Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said this year's edition was special as it commemorated the 50th anniversary of HPPNK, which was first introduced in 1975. He said the celebration, which carried the theme 'Kudrat Kami Menjamin Pertiwi', would highlight the spirit and commitment of the agriculture, livestock and fisheries sectors in ensuring food security for the well-being of the people. 'HPPNK is a prestigious event that will bring together farmers, livestock breeders and fishermen from across the country to celebrate their contributions in ensuring food sufficiency and security, as well as in driving the development of the country's agro-food sector,' he said at the pre-launch ceremony of the celebration here today. Mohamad said the HPPNK 2025 celebration would be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and was expected to attract over 500,000 visitors, with a projected sales value of up to RM100 million. Elaborating, Mohamad said 18 interesting segments would be featured under four main focus areas, namely Agro Millenia, Sufficient and Guaranteed, Sejahtera MADANI, as well as Sales and Entrepreneurship. He said one of the main attractions would be the Agro MADANI Mega Sales, featuring the Malaysia MADANI Food concept, which would offer over 300 food selections, including popular Sabah dishes, along with daily necessities sold at prices 10 to 30 per cent lower than market prices. 'Various exhibitions and activities on technology and innovation will be held, including the Technology and Sustainability Exhibition and the crop and padi segment, as well as the Livestock and Aquaculture Exhibition. 'HPPNK not only celebrates the contributions of those in the sector but also provides opportunities for strategic networking, knowledge sharing and business ventures,' he said. Mohamad said food security would remain the main focus of the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry in efforts to reduce reliance on imports and boost local production.
