James Carville warns Mamdani to keep ‘globalize the intifada' phrase ‘out your mouth'

Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville blasted New York democratic socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani's refusal to condemn the phrase 'globalize the intifada,' which is associated with violence against Israel. Queens, New York State assemblyman Mamdani, a Ugandan-born Muslim with Indian heritage, won the race to become the Democratic Party's nominee for New York City mayor, but Republicans and even some Democrats have blasted the democratic socialist as too extreme. Carville called Mamdani out during an appearance Tuesday on 'The People's Cabinet' podcast after host Daniel Koh mentioned the popularity of some of his economic ideas in New York City. While Carville agreed the emphasis on affordability is similar to some of his own core ideas, he noted that there are generational sea changes happening in politics. 'One of the big changes is Israel just doesn't hold much sway with younger Jewish voters,' Carville said. 3 James Carville poses for a portrait at the 27th SCAD Savannah Film Festival on October 31, 2024 in Savannah, Georgia. 'Yeah, I mean, come on, man, just, s—, just get it out your mouth,' Carville said in frustration. 'Why do you think he won't do that?' Koh asked. 'I mean, that seems to be a pretty non-controversial thing to condemn, right?' 3 New York's Zohran Mamdani holds rally with union leaders inside HTC (Hotel & Gaming Trades Council) midtown HQ at 707 8th Avenue (between 44th and 45th streets) in midtown Manhattan. Paul Martinka for NY Post 'His father is an academic, and I think 'intifada' has different meanings to different people, alright?' Carville suggested. 'To some it means kind of 'opposition.' To most people, myself, it means, you know, 'violence.'' According to the American Jewish Committee, the phrase 'calls for people from around the globe to participate in rising up against Israel.' The Second Intifada against Israel in the early 2000s was marked by Palestinian terrorism, including suicide bombings against civilian Israelis. 'Look, I'm as befuddled as you are,' Carville added. 'And he's been given every opportunity to walk it back, okay, so I am quite befuddled by it. And people that I have an enormous respect for, Jonathan Chait and Hakeem Jeffries, are like, 'Come on, man.' S—, this ain't this hard. I mean, you could just see the angst in their voice.' 3 Zohran Mamdani leaving John Jay College after the second Democratic Mayoral Debate in New York, NY on June 12, 2025. Christopher Sadowski 'It is troubling,' he concluded. House Minority Leader and fellow New Yorker Jeffries called out Mamdani after his win, warning, ''Globalizing the intifada,' by way of example, is not an acceptable phrase. He's going to have to clarify his position on that as he moves forward.' 'With respect to the Jewish communities that I represent, I think our nominee is going to have to convince folks that he is prepared to aggressively address the rise in antisemitism in the city of New York, which has been an unacceptable development,' he concluded.

Powerful unions 32BJ and HTC endorse Zohran Mamdani for NYC mayor

The Hotel and Gaming Trades Council and 32 BJ, two of the city's most politically influenial private sector unions, have endorsed Zohran Mamdani for mayor, after initially backing Andrew Cuomo's unsuccessful comeback campaign. The move comes as Cuomo has yet to announce whether he'll pursue a run on an independent line in November's general mayoral election, and as Mamdani looks to pull together institutional backing as he faces Mayor Adams in the fall contest. The unions' support of Adams in the 2021 election was seen as crucial to his victory that year. 'This is a campaign for the working people of this city who deserve dignity on the job and neighborhoods they can afford,' Mamdani, a democratic socialist, said in a statement. 'That's exactly who HTC and 32BJ fights and delivers for every single day, and I am honored to have their support as the Democratic nominee for Mayor of New York. Together, we will win a new day for the New Yorkers who keep this city running every single day.' Rich Maroko, the president of HTC, said the union shares Mamdani's affordability and quality of life priorities. 'We are confident that whenever we're in a fight, Zohran will be on our side standing up for hospitality workers,' Maroko said. 'That's why we are genuinely excited to endorse Zohran and ready to help him win in November.' That was a shift in tone for Maroko, who voiced concerns Tuesday night as early returns showed Mamdani beating Cuomo. 'Obviously that's not ideal, but we'll wait and see what the results show,' Maroko told the Daily News at Cuomo's election night party as the first few ballot dumps came in. 32 BJ President Manny Pastreich said his union's building worker members were ready to hit the streets on Mamdani's behalf. 'Zohran Mamdani has united and inspired New Yorkers around a positive and optimistic vision for a truly affordable city,' Pastreich said in a statement. 'He is ready and equipped to fight for our city and has made clear he is ready to stand up to attacks from the Trump administration.' Both unions initially endorsed Cuomo's mayoral run despite calling on him to resign as governor in 2021 amid sexual and professional misconduct accusations. The unions' switch to back Mamdani comes after he pulled off a stunning victory on primary day, prompting Cuomo to concede the race.

HTC Partners with NTT Com to Forge a New Model for Immersive Entertainment in Japan

TOKYO & TAIPEI, Taiwan--(BUSINESS WIRE)--HTC Corporation, a global leader in innovative smartphone and virtual reality platforms, today announced the signing of a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), the leading Japanese ICT solutions provider for telecommunications and smart venue infrastructure. The two companies will join forces to promote the development and application of large-scale immersive location-based entertainment (LBE) across Japan, paving the way for a new era of immersive experiences. LBE is a rapidly growing type of immersive entertainment that brings extended reality (XR) headsets into physical spaces, allowing guests to enjoy virtual experiences together. LBE can deliver a range of experiences across culture, entertainment, education, and tourism. For LBE venue operators, HTC's lightweight deployment solutions allow for quick setup without major renovations, which enables flexible planning and improved venue utilization and value. As Japan continues to invest in large-scale sports and concert venues, operators face the challenge of maximizing venue usage in off-peak periods. Reducing operational costs while increasing usage is crucial to the health of these businesses. With HTC's globally leading LBE technology and NTT Com's expertise in smart venue infrastructure and networking, the partnership will develop innovative LBE immersive experiences and help revitalize venue operations. As a pioneer in XR, HTC has successfully launched immersive cultural exhibitions in multiple countries, showcasing the versatility of LBE in large spaces. Notable examples include "Eternal Notre-Dame," recreating the historical splendor of Notre-Dame Cathedral; "Versailles: The Lost Garden of the Sun King," transporting visitors into the grandeur of French royal gardens; and "La Magie Opéra," an operatic XR journey at the Paris Opera. These experiences have received acclaim from international media and audiences alike, highlighting the potential of XR to transcend cultural and technological boundaries. HTC's LBE solution supports multi-user synchronous immersive experiences, allowing free exploration of virtual spaces as large as 1,000 square meters (approximately 33 x 30 meters). These experiences can be adapted for different uses, including cultural exhibitions, performing arts, military and police training, educational outreach, and immersive tourism, offering high scalability and commercial flexibility. Looking ahead, HTC and NTT Com plan to deepen their collaboration by working with popular Japanese IP holders in anime and gaming, cultural institutions, and local governments to expand the scope and depth of immersive content offerings. In addition, NTT Com will explore integrating its advanced technology platforms—such as IOWN (Innovative Optical and Wireless Network), IoT applications, and tactile transmission systems—to build a next-generation entertainment model. This will enable real-time multi-site connectivity and highly interactive immersive experiences, driving Japan's LBE ecosystem toward a more interconnected, intelligent future. FRIM empowers local herbal entrepreneurs through HTC

KUALA LUMPUR: The Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) is committed to empowering and assisting small and medium entrepreneurs to seize opportunities in the herbal industry, which is expected to have a global market reach of RM1.6 trillion by 2030. FRIM said this included support services offered at its Herbal Technology Centre (HTC), which was established in 2005 and had received the Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certification. It added that HTC is capable of providing contract manufacturing services to herbal entrepreneurs, and has been recognised as a BioNexus Partner laboratory by BioEconomy Corporation and a National Pharmacy Regulatory Division (NPRA) Manufacturing Licence holder since 2011, and is now a major reference centre in the industry. "HTC has also obtained various certifications, including the GMP for Food (MS 1480:2020), Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP)(MS 1514:2009), TQCSI HACCP Code: 2022 as well as the halal certification from the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia for pharmaceutical contract manufacturing. "The main strengths of HTC include its integrity as a government agency capable of safeguarding the intellectual property rights of customers, well-equipped facilities, strategic positioning, value-added services in terms of technical advisory services and research and development," FRIM said in a statement yesterday. FRIM said that since 2016, HTC has provided 2,048 types of services to over 500 clients, in addition to generating income of over RM2.56 million for FRIM. "During that period, a total of 30 herbal products were also registered with NPRA, while over 223,000 units of registered products were released to the market, with the overall value estimated at over RM19 million, thus proving the crucial role played by FRIM in assisting the economic growth of local entrepreneurs," it said. FRIM director-general Datuk Dr Ismail Parlan was quoted as saying that this effort would be continued to ensure more herbal entrepreneurs can produce quality, safe and competitive products for the domestic and international markets. "With increased demand for herbal-based products and awareness of consumers regarding healthy lifestyles, FRIM, through HTC, is ready to play a strategic role in developing the country's herbal industry in a sustainable and high-impact manner," he said. According to FRIM, the market for natural products in Malaysia was estimated to be valued at over RM5 billion in 2023, and it is expected to continue to grow. "The high demand for plant-based products, including health supplements, functional food and traditional medicines, encourages many local entrepreneurs to produce their own products. However, various constraints in terms of legal compliance and the high cost of building GMP-status facilities become a challenge," it said. FRIM added that, based on the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984, all herbal products with health claims in Malaysia must be registered with NPRA and the Ministry of Health (MOH) to ensure safety and quality. "Unregistered products can be a danger to consumers, as proven by the seizure of more than 70,000 illegal traditional and cosmetic products worth RM10.1 million by the MOH in November 2024," it said. – BERNAMA
