‘Are you saying I don't know my job?': JP Dutta slammed Abhishek Bachchan's reaction to his Refugee performance, actor gave 17 retakes in front of 10,000 people
If the adage 'hard work pays off' ever needed a poster boy, Bollywood acting legends Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan's son Abhishek Bachchan would be a strong contender. From a series of substandard performances in early films such as Tera Jadoo Chal Gayaa, Bas Itna Sa Khwaab Hai, Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya and Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, and a breakthrough success with Dhoom, to back-to-back notable roles in Bunty Aur Babli, Sarkar, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and Guru, and now owning a name for himself through performances in films like Manmarziyaan, Ludo, Bob Biswas, Dasvi and I Want to Talk, Abhishek Bachchan has come a long way. Despite being the son of two of Bollywood's most distinguished and accomplished actors, Abhishek initially showed little to no potential or promise. Nor did he have any unrealistic assumptions about himself. He has also never shied away from admitting his weaknesses and where he faltered. Although he feels that his performance in his debut film, the romantic drama Refugee (2000), was not up to the mark, not everyone agrees with his opinion; and one of the people who strongly disagrees is the film's director JP Dutta. Abhishek recently revealed that when he shared his thoughts with Dutta once, the filmmaker gave him an earful. I feel I wasn't ready enough for you. I could have done so much better, and you gave me such a responsibility. His response was typical JP Duta, 'So you're saying I don't know my job?' I wondered why he would think that? He said, 'I okayed the take, right?' So I was like, actually, he's got a point. The director okayed the take; it's their decision. He always puts me back into my place when I'm flying a bit too high,' Abhishek Bachchan recalled during a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India. He added, 'I wish I had the armoury that I have today back then. But I also realise that a large part of the reason why I'm that equipped today is because I've spent 25 years doing what I do.' Also starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, Jackie Shroff, Suniel Shetty, Sudesh Berry and Anupam Kher in key roles, Refugee was an average grosser at the box office. ICYMI | Mumtaz opens up on Fardeen Khan's divorce with daughter Natasha Madhwani: 'They have separated, every marriage has its ups and downs' During the chat, Abhishek also recalled giving 17 retakes for a shot in Refugee. Mentioning that he had already convinced himself he was the 'Marlon Brando of passing shots', he said his overconfidence soon landed him in trouble. 'When JP Dutta's father, OP Dutta, who penned the dialogues for the film, came for the narration before one day's shoot, I thought all I had to do was respond 'Name? Refugee' to Kulbhushan Kharbanda's question of 'What's your name?' So I paid no heed and continued fooling around with Bebo (Kareena). The shooting happened in a village. After delivering this line, I looked around, but JP hadn't said 'cut'. I thought he was expecting some more action, so I started filling water in a bowl. But he didn't even okay the next take. There were 5,000–10,000 people watching the set. They had all come after hearing that Amitabh Bachchan's son was acting for the first time.' Besides the crowd, his parents' friend Reena Roy and his acting coach Anupam Kher were also on set, which scared Abhishek even more. After each take, he said, JP Dutta kept stepping closer to him, sending chills down his spine. Once the fear set in, Abhishek began fumbling more and even broke several clay water bowls. 'Every time he screamed 'cut', I was sure I was about to get a smack from him. But it didn't happen.' By then, the fear of thousands of people judging him had also set in, pushing Abhishek to the verge of tears. 'After the 16th take, JP saab came up to me and asked what was wrong. I told him that having so many people watching was bothering me. He removed everyone from the set. Then he told me that no matter how long it took, he would extract the performance he needed from me. That was also when I realised JP hadn't cut the shot because 'Name? Refugee' wasn't the only dialogue I was supposed to say. I actually had almost two pages of dialogues, which I had paid no heed to when OP Dutta came for the narration,' he added.

Why didn't Karisma Kapoor become Abhishek Bachchan's wife? Amitabh Bachchan once talked about...
In the glitz of Bollywood, few stories are as layered — and quietly tragic — as that of Karisma Kapoor. From a broken engagement with a Bachchan heir to a turbulent marriage that ended in divorce, her personal journey reads like a script that never made it to the screen. Before marrying businessman Sanjay Kapur in 2003, Karisma Kapoor was engaged to none other than Abhishek Bachchan. The two had even co-starred in Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya (2002), during which their real-life bond blossomed. Their engagement was formalised — but short-lived. The split sent shockwaves through the industry. Years later, Amitabh Bachchan finally addressed the broken alliance on Koffee With Karan. In a rare moment of candour, he said, 'It was a sensitive time. Relationships were being formed, and some were breaking. We didn't want anyone to get hurt, but when circumstances force you to part, it's better to let go.' He added that such moments build maturity, adding, 'If we are honest with ourselves, even heartbreak teaches something valuable. My father always said, 'If things go your way, it's good. If not, it's still good — because it's God's way.' In 2003, the same year her engagement with Abhishek ended, Karisma married Delhi-based industrialist Sanjay Kapur. The marriage, arranged under pressure, was rocky. Notably, the entire Bachchan family was absent from the wedding. By 2016, Karisma and Sanjay parted ways legally, and she has since raised their two children as a single mother. The past week brought another twist of fate — the sudden death of her ex-husband, Sanjay Kapur. Though long separated, the news cast a somber cloud over Karisma and her family. Through public heartbreaks and private battles, Karisma Kapoor remains one of Bollywood's most poised figures — her silence often saying more than words.

Karisma Kapoor almost married THIS actor, called off engagement, before Sunjay Kapur entered her life; find out who
Bollywood actor Karisma Kapoor's name cropped up in the news ever since her ex-husband Sunjay Kapur passed away recently. His sudden death has caused a lot of stir in the industry and Bollywood social circle. While Sunjay Kapur is often remembered as Karisma Kapoor's ex-husband due to their highly publicised divorce, few may recall that Karisma was once engaged to someone else before crossing paths with Sunjay. Karisma Kapoor was briefly engaged with actor Abhishek Bachchan. Karisma and Abhishek reportedly met during the latter's sister Shweta Bachchan's wedding. It is believed that the two fell hard in love and began dating. If reports are true, they managed to keep their relationship under wraps for five years. In 2002, Karisma attended Amitabh Bachchan's 60th birthday. At the event, Jaya Bachchan announced Abhishek and Karisma's engagement publicly and left everyone surprised. Next year, in January, Karisma and Abhishek's much-awaited Bollywood wedding was called off. While there are many reports suggesting several reasons behind their break up, the families never revealed the real reason. Karisma and Abhishek starred together in the film Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya (2002). They never reunited onscreen, except for the special song Deewangi Deewangi from Om Shanti Om. In September 2003, Karisma Kapoor married Delhi-based businessman Sunjay Kapur in a grand Sikh wedding ceremony at her ancestral house, The Krishna Raj Bungalow. Her wedding was a high-profile event with several celebrities in attendance. She was his second wife. Kapur was previously married to designer Nandita Mahtani. Together, Karisma and Sunjay had two children. They welcomed their first child, daughter Samaira born on 11 March 2005. Later in 2011, they had a son Kiaan. After the arrival of their son, Karisma and Sunjay parted ways. In 2014, Karisma and Sunjay filed for divorce, which gained a lot of attention due to mudslinging. Several claims and shocking revelations about their marriage were made by the two. In 2016, their divorce was finalised. Sunjay shared a positive equation with his kids, Samaira and Kiaan. After the divorce, Sunjay married Delhi-based model-turned-actress Priya Sachdev. His third marriage to Priya took place in 2017, a year after his divorce. Sunjay and Priya later welcomed a son, Azarias, in 2018. Sunjay Kapur died on June 12 in England. He suffered a heart attack while playing polo. Reportedly, he swallowed a bee which might have caused an anaphylactic shock. He was 53. His mortal remains are yet to reach India. His funeral will take place in Delhi, as per his father-in-law.
