Andrew Irwin reveals his target for a successful weekend as he looks to get British Superbike season back on track
Irwin admits his 2025 season has proved challenging so far, with the 30-year-old leaving Snetterton empty-handed two weeks. The Carrickfergus man crashed twice and was outside the points in the Sprint race, finishing 19th. Irwin, currently 16th in the championship, was 12th in the combined free times yesterday at Knockhill on a wet track. He is now looking ahead to today's opening race (4.00pm) and is focused on putting some points on the board at a circuit he enjoys. 'I'm looking forward to Knockhill, it's a track that I've always enjoyed,' said Irwin. 'The start of my season hasn't gone exactly to plan but we were fast at Donington and I think that will translate into how we run this weekend. 'Three solid races is the plan, from which we can really change the shape of our season from this point onwards. 'I've got good memories of Knockhill; last year, we ran well and I was quick in the wet, which may be a factor this year. 'It feels like sort of a home round; the Scottish fans are really welcoming and the circuit is truly unique. 'Certainly, it's a big change from Snetterton last time out, and the variety of tracks that we get to race on in BSB is part of what makes the series so good.' His older brother, Glenn, is out of action this weekend through injury following a crash in practice at Snetterton. The Hager PBM Ducati rider underwent surgery on his sacrum after suffering hip and pelvis fractures in a high-side. The 35-year-old was fortunate to avoid being struck by brother Andrew and Scotsman Rory Skinner in the aftermath, who did not see him lying prone at the side of the track because of a cloud of dust kicked up by Irwin's crash. The two-time title runner-up has been replaced in the PBM team by former champion Scott Redding, who was 13th fastest yesterday on his return to the series. 'It's exciting for me to be back racing in front of the BSB crowd this weekend at Knockhill,' said the 2019 champion. 'Obviously, I have some really great memories with the team from when we won the title back in 2019 and as always I want to do the best job I possibly can for myself, our sponsors and the team. 'I want to put on the best performance I can with this opportunity and I also want to wish Glenn a speedy recovery from his injuries.' No official timeframe has been given for Irwin's return but the Ulster rider pledged to be back in the saddle during the current campaign, while Jordan Bird, co-owner of the PBM squad, said his recovery was 'going well'. Storm Stacey (Bathams AJN BMW) was fastest yesterday from Danny Kent (McAMS Yamaha), Josh Brookes (DAO Racing Honda) and championship leader Bradley Ray (Raceways Yamaha).

Glenn Irwin's team offers new update on rider's health after horror crash at Snetterton
Irwin came off on Saturday morning and suffered fractures to his pelvis and hip. He narrowly avoided being struck by his brother Andrew and Scottish rider Rory Skinner, who did not see him lying at the side of the track amidst a cloud of dust. The Carrickfergus man was taken to Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and will miss the next round at Knockhill in Scotland. In a statement, the Hager PBM Ducati team confirmed a replacement rider is being sought to fill in for Irwin. 'After lengthy discussions with his medical team, Glenn is scheduled to undergo surgery on his sacrum (pelvic region) this Thursday morning,' the statement read. 'We understand the serious nature of this injury and our heartfelt thoughts and best wishes are with Glenn during this difficult time. 'Following the procedure, we'll be focusing on his recovery with an intensive rehabilitation plan. Until that gets underway, it's not possible to predict a timeline for his recovery and his return to the Hager PBM Ducati team and the British Superbike Championship. 'We know Glenn will be greatly missed from the BSB grid, and we're truly grateful for the overwhelming support and kind messages we've received. 'The understanding from the sponsors and the series organising at this difficult time is also most appreciated, and the team is working hard on finding a suitable stand-in rider with the aim of being back on track at Knockhill.' Irwin was only 12 points behind England's Bradley Ray before the Snetterton round but said his championship hopes had been 'ruined' by the crash. Ray claimed a second successive BSB treble on the Raceways Yamaha at Snetterton to make it seven victories from eight races so far in 2025. The 28-year-old holds a 30-point advantage at the top of the standings over reigning champion Kyle Ryde. In a video message posted to social media from his hospital bed on Saturday night, Irwin said his ambition of winning the BSB title remained unaltered. 'I apologise to the team because we've ruined our championship challenge for sure, we will be missing for a little while,' he said. 'But, in true 'Glenn' spirit, we're resilient, we're determined, we will be back, and the goal is what the goal has always been, and that's to lift the British Superbike Championship.'

Glenn Irwin involved in practice crash
Northern Ireland rider has slipped down the championship standings as a consequence Glenn Irwin was taken to hospital for assessment Glenn Irwin's hopes of winning the British Superbike title suffered a blow yesterday after the Northern Ireland rider was ruled out of the opening race at round three following a crash at Snetterton. Irwin was high-sided from his Hager PBM Ducati machine during the final free practice session in the morning. The 35-year-old was taken to Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital for assessment after initial checks at the circuit medical centre did not show any obvious damage. A statement issued by the organisers said: 'Glenn Irwin was taken to the circuit medical centre after a crash in Free Practice 3 (FP3). 'Following x-rays on his hip and right leg at the circuit medical centre where nothing was visible, he has been taken to Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital for further scans and is unfit for Qualifying. 'Further updates will follow when available.' Should Irwin be passed fit to race in today's two BSB races, he would have to start from the back of the grid. John Mowatt, PBM Ducati team coordinator, said: 'It was unfortunate. In the 10-minute FP3 session we had set a fairly quick lap on the first flyer and then we were bedding ourselves into it. Unfortunately, he's high-sided at turn 9 on the right-hand side. 'He took a bit of a heavy impact to the right-hand side of his body.' Irwin has now dropped from second in the championship to fourth after missing the first race of the weekend and is 30 points behind former champion Bradley Ray (Raceways Yamaha), who dominated yesterday's opener. Ray is back in BSB this year after two seasons competing in the World Superbike Championship and has picked up where he left off, winning five out of the six races held this year to underline his title credentials. The English rider set a new lap record and won by 5.380s from reigning champion Kyle Ryde (OMG Nitrous Competitions Yamaha), with Tommy Bridewell sealing his first podium of 2025 in third for Honda Racing. Ulsterman Scott Swann finished 14th on the Send My Bag/IWR Honda, while Donegal's Richard Kerr was 16th (ROKiT BMW). Andrew Irwin (Honda Racing) did not finish after coming together with Lee Jackson. The BSB Sprint race today is at 1:20pm, with the final race of the weekend at the Norfolk circuit scheduled for 4:30pm. In the Supersport opener, Dublin's Jack Kennedy won from Rhys Irwin. Also yesterday, the fifth round of the Ulster Superbike Championship was held at Kirkistown in Co Down, where Derek Sheils (Roadhouse Macau BMW) won both races from Carl Phillips (SBT Ireland Kawasaki). Graeme Irwin was a double winner in the Supersport class on the Magic Bullet Ducati, and Christian Elkin won both Supertwin races.

Glenn Irwin outlines why he's taking ‘huge confidence' into British Superbike round at Snetterton
Irwin feels the Hager PBM Ducati team made a significant improvement against his Yamaha rivals at Donington last time out compared to 2024. He has three runner-up finishes under his belt so far and a third place after the first two rounds of the Championship, but now the Carrickfergus man is looking for victories at a circuit where he has triumphed previously on both Ducati and Honda machinery. Irwin, who is 12 points behind Raceways Yamaha rider Bradley Ray ahead of the opening race of the weekend on Saturday (4pm), said: 'Looking ahead to Snetterton, obviously this year, we have started really, really strong and have been consistent across the board at Oulton Park and Donington Park. 'What was pleasing at Donington was the fact that it was a marked improvement from last year as we were nowhere near the pace of the OMG package last year of Kyle (Ryde) and Ryan (Vickers), but this year, we managed to be ahead. 'Brad won the race, I think we showed good pace to reel him in of over two seconds at a track where last year, we really struggled to stay in the top four or five. So, we take huge confidence from that and it bodes well going forward.' Irwin was eighth fastest on the combined free practice time sheets yesterday on the Ducati. His brother and Honda Racing rider Andrew was 16th with Scott Swann (Send My Bag/IWR Honda) one place behind in 17th. Irwin did the double at Snetterton in the summer of 2024 and the 35-year-old would love a repeat to close the deficit to former champion Ray at the top of the Championship. 'Snetterton has been a track where the bike has always worked well and I have had a lot of success on both Honda and Ducati, so we are fully focused on going and winning races,' said Irwin. 'That being said, it's a long Championship, so we just need to keep our foot on the gas, keep applying pressure and making the most of the job we have. 'And by that I mean, I think making the most of it will be race victories this weekend, the team are working great, we have had some downtime and now we are coming back for race victories.' Meanwhile, the Fifth Round of the SBT Ireland Ulster Superbike Championship takes place on Saturday at Kirkistown in Co Down, promoted by the Hillsborough and Mid Antrim clubs. Lisburn's Carl Phillips was a double winner at Kirkistown two weeks previously in wet and dry conditions and moved to the top of the points standings, taking over from McAdoo Kawasaki's Korie McGreevy, who was ruled out after a crash in qualifying. Phillips is a former champion having won the title in 2019 and is making his return to racing this year for the first time since 2022. His opposition includes reigning champion Jonny Campbell, who was second in both races at Kirkistown in the previous round, plus Ryan Gibson and Ross Irwin. In the Supersport races, Graeme Irwin will be out to build on an impressive double on the Magic Bullet Ducati. It remains to be seen if reigning Ulster Supersport champion McGreevy has recovered sufficiently to race following his crash 14 days prior. Admission is £15 with Under-16s free.
