Lorde Can't Listen to ‘Virgin' Deep Cut ‘Clearblue': ‘That Whole Song Just Destroys Me'
Lorde knows that she has a tendency to unravel her listeners through her music. It's why 'Ribs' from her debut Pure Heroine is so effective, and why Melodrama can feel at once like walking across shards of glass and experiencing an euphoric release. But the singer-songwriter's upcoming fourth studio album, Virgin, has some moments that even she finds herself dismantled by. During a recent appearance on the Therapuss podcast with Jake Shane, Lorde revealed that she avoids playing back the album deep cut 'Clearblue.' 'There's a song that I love so much called 'Clearblue' that is about unprotected sex,' she said. 'And just the experience of taking a pregnancy test, and like, this flood of emotions that goes through your body … That whole song just destroys me. I can't even really listen to it.' More from Rolling Stone Miley Cyrus, Lorde, Haim, and All the Songs You Need to Know This Week Lorde Paints Vivid Descriptions on 'Virgin' Track List Lorde Celebrates 'Man of the Year' in New Video Virgin, out June 27, is shaping up to be Lorde's most visceral album yet. The cover art for the record is an X-ray of her pelvis that shows the exact placement of her IUD. In her recent Rolling Stone cover story, Lorde shared: 'I felt like stopping taking my birth control, I had cut some sort of cord between myself and this regulated femininity. It sounds crazy, but I felt that all of a sudden, I was off the map of femininity. And I totally believed that that allowed things to open up.' Essential to the process that resulted in Virgin was Lorde's explorative experience re-learning her body and its boundaries. '[I've] been in the same body [my] whole life. I understood it. I was like, 'These arms climbed the jungle gym. And they held an award on a TV show.' I understood the whole spectrum of it and began to enjoy the complexity and ruggedness,' she said. 'My gender got way more expansive when I gave my body more room.' So far, Lorde has previewed Virgin with 'Man of the Year' and 'What Was That.' Is Chappell Roan playing Glastonbury? Singer is hot favourite for Patchwork secret slot - along with these 7 other acts
This week will see 135,000 people pack into Worthy Farm for perhaps the biggest musical event of the year - the Glastonbury Festival . They'll see headliners The 1975, Olivia Rodrigo and Neil Young, along with hundreds of other acts across over 100 stages. But looking at the schedule on the official website, music fans will see numerous timeslots with 'TBA' next to them - with no indication of who will be playing. It could be a global megastar, or some busker from down the road on an acoustic guitar. Such is the joy of the festival. There are some big gaps to be filled - most intriguingly third on the Pyramid Stage on Saturday, where there is plenty of interest about who exactly 'Patchwork' are. Numerous names have been suggested, but with just a few days to go, eight names seem to be the most likely. Here's who they are, and how likely it is that they'll play, according to Casino Beats. 1 . Chappell Roan - 1/2 Chappell Roan is now the red hot favourite to be 'Patchwork' -with her odds dropping from 30/1 to 1/2. She's also playing a pair of gigs in Edinburgh this August as part of the Summer Sessions series. | AFP via Getty Images Photo Sales 2 . Haim - 4/1 The three sisters of Haim have a new album out and are in the UK with free time on Glastonbury weekend. The fact that there's a book called 'Patchwork' written by a German author called Sylvia HAIM means some people reckoned they've solved the riddle of the mysterious band of the same name appearing third on the bill on the Saturday. Having been favourites they have now drifted out to 4/1. | Getty Images for LOUIS VUITTON x Photo Sales 3 . Pulp - 7/1 Another band with an acclaimed new album out and who are currently touring (but have a gap at Glastonbury-time) are Sheffield indie stars Pulp. They've headlined twice in the past, including stepping in at short notice when The Stone Roses pulled out, and would be a popular booking. They are priced at 7/1 third favourites, despite repeatedly denying they are playing (protesting too much maybe?). | Getty Images Photo Sales 4 . Mumford & Sons - 12/1 Mumford & Sons released fifth studio album 'Rushmore' earlier this year and are getting back to playing live - recently headlining Radio 1's Big Weekend. They topped the bill on the Pyramid Stage in 2013. It would seem to be a good time for them to return - ahead of a fallow year in 2026. They are priced at 12/1. | Getty Images for Warner Bros. 'The song is really good': Haim confirm Stevie Nicks collaboration
Haim have confirmed the rumours are true about them recording a song with Stevie Nicks. Although the girl group - comprising siblings Danielle, Este and Alana Haim - cannot divulge anymore information about the collaboration, they've hailed the Fleetwood Mac frontwoman "the greatest human being on this planet". Alana told Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live: 'We can't say much, but what we can say is that Stevie Nicks is the greatest human being on this planet." Danielle added: 'And the song is really good.' The rumours have been around for years and Haim teamed up with Stevie for a rendition of Rhiannon during the 2018 MusiCares concert. The Edge of Seventeen singer recently suggested Haim could have been in Fleetwood Mac and hailed their songs as "percussive masterpieces". She told GQ Magazine: "It starts with Danielle's voice – it is just stunning. "She's the first part of the puzzle, but then the percussion that Este and Alana wrap around her turns all of their songs into percussive masterpieces." Stevie added that the sister trio - who just released their new album I Quit this month - could have "certainly all have been in Fleetwood Mac."
