Sumo: Hakuoho shakes up Nagoya meet with shock win over Onosato

NAGOYA (Kyodo) -- Up-and-coming No. 4 maegashira Hakuoho sprang a stunning upset to knock new yokozuna Onosato off the top of the leaderboard at the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament on Sunday. The 21-year-old Hakuoho's unexpected victory left sekiwake Kirishima tied for the lead with three rank-and-file wrestlers at 7-1 on Day 8 of the 15-day tournament at IG Arena. Onosato (6-2) had made short work of Hakuoho (4-4) in their only previous top-division meeting in May, but things did not go to plan for the new yokozuna as he faced a strong opening charge from the burly youngster. With the 25-year-old grand champion trying to pull him down, Hakuoho stayed attached to his opponent's body and drove forward for a push-out victory. "I'm glad that I was able to excite the fans with my performance," Hakuoho said. "My stablemaster (former yokozuna Terunofuji) told me just to go for broke and make use of everything I've been practicing in my training sessions." Onosato, gunning for his third straight Emperor's Cup, is competing as the sole yokozuna following Hoshoryu's injury withdrawal from the 15-day tournament. Former ozeki Kirishima had to work hard for his win against No. 3 maegashira Onokatsu (2-6), backpedaling under a flurry of blows before pushing his younger Mongolian compatriot over the straw bales. He shares the lead with the 40-year-old No. 4 maegashira Tamawashi, No. 8 maegashira Ichiyamamoto and top-division debutant Kusano, competing as a No. 14 maegashira. Tamawashi won a battle of former sekiwake against No. 2 maegashira Abi (4-4), Ichiyamamoto threw No. 10 maegashira Atamifuji (5-3), and Kusano forced out No. 15 maegashira Hidenoumi (0-6-2). The other overnight leader, former ozeki and current No. 16 maegashira Mitakeumi (6-2) lost to No. 11 maegashira Takanosho (5-3). Giant-killing Ukrainian No. 1 maegashira Aonishiki (6-2) continued to impress as he stayed one win off the pace with a force-out victory over former sekiwake Oho (2-6), now competing as a No. 2 maegashira. Ozeki Kotozakura dropped to 5-3 after being pushed out by Mongolian komusubi Oshoma (2-6), battling to stave off a losing record in his first meet as a member of the three "sanyaku" ranks below yokozuna. Sekiwake Wakatakakage improved to 4-4 with a thrilling backward pivot throw reversal against No. 3 maegashira Kinbozan (1-7).

Sumo: Ozeki Onosato marches on with 11th win, Hoshoryu 2 wins back

KYODO NEWS - 3 hours ago - 19:24 | Sports, All, Japan Ozeki Onosato has taken another step toward yokozuna promotion with his 11th straight win at the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament on Wednesday when grand champion Hoshoryu became his closest rival as the only wrestler with two defeats. Onosato had a tricky bout to navigate at Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan arena as an in-form komusubi Wakatakakage (8-3) retreated initially but drove forward with courage, putting his head on the ozeki's chest while holding a left underarm belt hold at the same time. But Onosato made the most of his bigger frame to stand his ground while grabbing the right overarm belt hold firmly, and despite Wakatakakage's attempted throw at the edge, the ozeki leaned his body toward his opponent to ruthlessly crush him out. The Spring meet winner in March, Onosato can secure promotion to the exalted rank by winning back-to-back Emperor's Cups this month or posting a result deemed as good. Hoshoryu (9-2) just about overcame up-and-coming No. 7 maegashira Hakuoho (8-3), who showed little fear in driving straight at the yokozuna and had the grand champion trying to scramble his way out along the edge. But Hakuoho lost his balance as he tried to apply a decisive push and inadvertently collapsed backward to miss out on a famous win as Hoshoryu breathed a sigh of relief. No. 9 maegashira Aonishiki (8-3) joined Hakuoho in falling behind in the title race after the Ukrainian tested Kotozakura (7-4) throughout in his first encounter with an ozeki but was narrowly beaten to suffer back-to-back defeats. Aonishiki bullishly charged forward and forced the ozeki back to the edge, but Kotozakura showed good balance to withstand left underarm throw attempts and floored Aonishiki a fraction early instead with an armlock throw. Two sekiwake both prevailed to secure winning records at 8-3 as Daieisho slapped down No. 4 maegashira Takerufuji (4-7) and Kirishima did the same to No. 4 maegashira Ichiyamamoto (4-7). No. 6 maegashira Oshoma and No. 17 maegashira Asakoryu also got their eighth wins. Sumo: Onosato improves to 10-0, moves 2 wins ahead in title race

KYODO NEWS - 22 hours ago - 18:58 | Sports, All Ozeki Onosato advanced to a perfect 10-0 and moved two wins clear in the title race Tuesday at the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament with an easy victory over No. 4 maegashira Ichiyamamoto. The 24-year-old powerhouse received a big boost in his quest for back-to-back championships and promotion to yokozuna after his nearest rivals coming into Day 10, rank-and-file youngsters Hakuoho and Aonishiki, both dropped to 8-2. Current sole yokozuna Hoshoryu, meanwhile, improved to 8-2, but ozeki Kotozakura struggled to find consistency as he dropped to 6-4 at Ryogoku Kokugikan arena. Having won their only previous meeting in the top division, Onosato was never in doubt against Ichiyamamoto (4-6), driving him to the edge and pushing him down after the maegashira half-heartedly tried an evasive maneuver. Hoshoryu used a rear push out to dispatch agile No. 5 maegashira Ura (2-8), sending him over the edge after an unsuccessful slap-down attempt at the opening charge. The yokozuna moved onto the second rung of the leaderboard alongside Hakuoho, Aonishiki and komusubi Wakatakakage. Former sekiwake Wakatakakage (8-2) clinched his winning record by defeating exciting young Ukrainian prospect Aonishiki in one of the day's highlight bouts. Exhibiting similar styles, but with a gulf in experience between them, the pair grappled furiously before Wakatakakage toppled 21-year-old No. 9 maegashira Aonishiki with an under-shoulder swing down. "Whoever I face, I'm just concentrating on doing my own sumo," Wakatakakage said. Sekiwake Daieisho (7-3) overwhelmed No. 7 maegashira Hakuoho by sticking to his strengths and unleashing a decisive thrusting attack straight from the jump. Kotozakura was once again unable to overcome one of his bogey opponents, current sekiwake and former ozeki Kirishima (7-3), who improved to 13-4 in their head-to-head rivalry with a force out.
