Nostalgic arcade restaurant chain unveils new spinoff concept
Nothing is more nostalgic than arcades, with neon lights, endless games, and a little competition among friends. Winning tickets was addictive, and collecting as many as possible to redeem them for prizes made us want to stay all day, if our parents - or our allowances - allowed it. They were like the kid-friendly version of casinos, which might have been early signs that a slight gambling addiction was on the way for some. Nonetheless, they formed a memorable part of our childhoods. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter However, like many other businesses, an arcade-based restaurant chain wasn't expecting the Covid pandemic to force temporary shutdowns of all its locations, leaving it with limited ways to continue making enough money to pay its bills. The financial strains were too much for the business to handle, leading it to make a devastating decision that all companies fear. Cheese's parent company, CEC Entertainment, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June 2020 and emerged from it six months later under new ownership. At the beginning of this year, Chuck E. Cheese revealed a $350 million investment strategy to revive its brand by updating 500 units, and now, it's making another major improvement. Image source: Houston Chronicle via Getty Images Chuck E. Cheese has launched Chuck's Arcade, a new spinoff concept for adults that puts a modern spin on classic arcade games while maintaining its signature brand. Since all ages are welcome, this is a place for adults who grew up going to Chuck E. Cheese to relive their childhood memories while sharing them with their kids or younger siblings. Related: Walmart makes deal to open popular food chain in stores "Chuck's Arcade is a natural evolution - an opportunity to extend our arcade legacy into new formats that engage both lifelong fans and a new generation through a curated mix of retro classics and cutting-edge experiences," said Chuck E. Cheese CEO David McKillips in the press release. The new Chuck's Arcade locations are now open nationwide across major malls in St. Petersburg, Florida; Trumbull, Connecticut; Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Oklahoma; Victor, New York; Buford, Georgia; El Paso, Texas; Nashua and Salem, New Hampshire; and St. Louis. These first few locations are only the beginning, as Chuck E. Cheese is planning a massive expansion, with 10 more upcoming locations across eight states. The arcade restaurant chain also plans to open a one-of-a-kind Chuck's Arcade and Pizzeria in Kansas City, Missouri, with a full food menu and a sit-down restaurant. Home Depot spends billions on major acquisition
Although home renovation shows and do-it-yourself projects might not be for everyone, those who grew up with handy fathers have a nostalgic connection to this niche world. When running errands with our dads to look for home renovation materials, one retail chain stands out in most people's minds. Related: Walmart makes deal to open popular food chain in stores Home Depot is the world's largest home improvement retailer with over 2,300 locations across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. This retail chain sells more than 35,000 products in-store and 1 million online, ranging from lawn supplies to home improvement materials. Image source: Morris/Bloomberg via Getty Images Home Depot (HD) announced that it has entered a definitive agreement with specialty building products distributor GMS to acquire it for approximately $4.3 billion. As stipulated in the deal, Home Depot's subsidiary SRS Distribution will purchase all outstanding shares of GMS common stock for $110.00 per share, for a total enterprise value including net debt of around $5.5 billion. More Retail News: Beloved Halloween-themed restaurant faces troublesome closureMajor bankrupt home retailer closing 26 stores, list revealedAfter bankruptcy, closed clothing chain hints at comeback Home Depot acquired SRS Distribution, the Texas-based building products distributor, last year for $18.25 billion, marking its largest acquisition ever. This big win comes after major building products provider QXO had submitted a $5 billion cash bid for GMS. The transaction in Home Depot's latest acquisition is expected to be completed by the end of January 2026. This latest acquisition aims to boost Home Depot's sales by attracting home professionals and contractors willing to spend more than a few bucks on light bulbs. With the company's business coming mainly from U.S. shoppers, it has diversified its products' sourcing so it doesn't heavily rely on foreign imports, aiming for no more than 10% coming from a single country amid looming tariffs. Additionally, high interest rates and economic uncertainty have slowed the housing market, decreasing homeowners' demand for Home Depot's main products, since they are not investing to the extent of home professionals. Related: Bankrupt retail chain makes major comeback, reopens new stores Although Home Depot missed analysts' predicted Earnings Per Share during the first quarter of 2025, the company still reaffirmed its fiscal 2025 guidance, expecting total sales to grow 2.8%. GMS joining Home Depot will allow it to offer more fulfillment and service options, attracting a more constant and lucrative market amid so much economic uncertainty. "Together, we'll create a network of more than 1,200 locations and a fleet of more than 8,000 trucks capable of making tens of thousands of jobsite deliveries per day," said SRS Distribution CEO Dan Tinker in the announcement. Beloved Halloween-themed restaurant faces troublesome closure
Imagine if every day were like Halloween, and we could dress up like other characters to forget about life's problems and responsibilities. Halloween is the only holiday when people can escape their everyday identities for a day to channel their alter egos or embody someone else. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter Not only is it a fun tradition that creates unforgettable childhood memories for many, but it also allows adults to feel like kids again through Halloween-themed events. Related: Popular grocery store chain resumes store openings after 3-year hiatus Halloween is so memorable that most of us still remember every costume we've ever worn. Someone loved this spooky tradition so much that they created a one-of-a-kind restaurant, which quickly grew. Image source: Horsten/picture alliance via Getty Images Inspired by the aesthetic of film director Tim Burton, founder Zach Neil named the restaurant "Beetle House" in honor of Burton's 1988 movie "Beetlejuice." The Beetle House website describes the eatery as "like an adult Halloween party with a Burtonesque feel, a dash of a '90s goth band, a touch of emo, and a diabolical dose of cosplay. We are a safe place where every goth, punk, freak, weirdo, artist, and visitor is welcomed and celebrated." The first location opened in New York City, initially as a pop-up restaurant in 2016, and due to its huge success, it expanded to Los Angeles the following year. Related: Bankrupt retail chain makes major comeback, reopens new stores Beetle House is unlike any other restaurant or bar, rising to fame because of its spooky decorations and festive food and beverage menu. Guests can enjoy dishes such as the "Edward Burger Hands" burger, which is garnished with a pair of scissors they can take home. However, after nearly 10 years, the restaurant faced a troublesome financial crisis it wasn't expecting. After the Covid pandemic and the Los Angeles fires in January of this year, Beetle House may not be able to sustain operations at its Los Angeles location. However, this tragic outcome was not due to the usual slowdown in consumer spending or misguided financial decisions. Instead, unfulfilled agreements and theft by a third party are to blame. "The pandemic shut us down for over a year. An investor pulled out, leaving us with a $500,000 hole. A manager stole $60,000 and vanished. Then came the LA fires. Now the immigration crisis that's devastated hospitality in this city," wrote Beetle House in an Instagram post. More Retail News: Key kitchen and cooking company will raise prices over tariffsStarbucks brings back fan-favorite menu item after 2-year hiatusAfter bankruptcy, closed clothing chain hints at comeback Beetle House also notes that the business was not created to profit from it; its goal was to build a loving space for the community. The restaurant chain is currently exploring every option to prevent the Los Angeles location from closing. But if the fundraising goal is not met soon, the restaurant will be forced to shut down in July, since it can no longer pay rent and bills. On the other hand, the New York location is stable and was not affected by the troublesome events.
