Hamidin believes Harimau Malaya can break into world's top 100

Former Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president Tan Sri Hamidin Mohd Amin is optimistic that the national team can reach that milestone, given their recent progress under the Harimau Malaya revolution driven by the Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim. Malaysia are now ranked No. 125 in the latest FIFA rankings, a six-spot jump from their previous position at No. 131, their highest in 19 years since they last reached the same ranking in February 2006. The improvement came after a convincing win over Vietnam in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifying campaign last month under new head coach Peter Cklamovski. Hamidin believes the current set-up has the potential to take Malaysian football to greater heights, especially with strong backing from Tunku Ismail. 'After such a long time, to see Malaysia ranked No. 125 is a great achievement. It shows what can happen when everyone works together to push the national team forward,' said Hamidin. 'When I first took office, we were ranked 178 in the world. Slowly but surely, we climbed up the ladder and even reached No. 130 before the Asian Cup in Qatar. 'We must continue this momentum. Consistent progress requires consistent effort. If all parties work together and give their full support, I truly believe it's not impossible for us to break into the world's top 100 within the next two or three years. 'But the effort must be consistent, as other nations are also working hard to strengthen their teams. Long-term planning is crucial to ensure Harimau Malaya remain competitive on the international stage,' said Hamidin. Still, he warned that other nations are also making strong strides to improve their rankings. In South-East Asia, Thailand continue to lead the way at No. 102, followed by Vietnam at No. 113, Indonesia at No. 118, and Malaysia just behind. 'We all dream of achieving greater success than where we are now. ''That's why continuous effort is essential. With the initiatives introduced by Tunku Ismail, I'm confident we're on the right track to keep moving forward. 'But we can't afford to be complacent. We must keep evolving and find better ways to improve the team's performance. Otherwise, we risk slipping backwards,' he said. Hamidin was speaking after receiving the Sports Leadership Figure award at the 2024 Malaysian Sportswriters Association (SAM)-100PLUS Awards in Kuala Lumpur on Monday.

Football visionary Hamidin is Sportswriters' top leadership pick
KUALA LUMPUR: Former FA of Malaysia (FAM) president Tan Sri Hamidin Amin has been named the 2024 Sportswriters Association of Malaysia (SAM)-100PLUS Sports Leadership Icon, in recognition of his contributions to Malaysian football — from grassroots development to the national team's resurgence on the international stage. Over the past three decades, the 60-year-old has played a pivotal role in shaping the country's football landscape at both state and national levels. Hamidin began his football carrer in 1995 as executive secretary of the FA of Selangor (FAS), before serving as its secretary-general from 1998-2013. During his tenure, Selangor lifted 18 trophies, including five Malaysia Cup titles, cementing their dominance in local football. His success in Selangor led to national duties. He became FAM secretary-general in 2013 and was elected president in 2018. Since then, Hamidin has introduced structural reforms aimed at improving governance and player development. A standout achievement under his leadership was Malaysia's qualification for the 2023 Asian Cup on merit — their first in 43 years — marking a significant milestone in Harimau Malaya's revival. Central to that success was FAM's push for naturalisation and heritage-based recruitment, moves that strengthened the squad and improved competitiveness. Beyond football, Hamidin also served as deputy president of the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM). "Hamidin is not just an expert in football management. He embodies a rare kind of leadership that inspires," said SAM deputy president Izahar Atan. "His commitment, clear vision and courage to make big decisions are why he was chosen as this year's Sports Leadership Icon." Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh is expected to attend the SAM-100PLUS Awards ceremony in Petaling Jaya on Monday.

A boon for FAM
PETALING JAYA: The appointment of Tan Sri Hamidin Mohd Amin as the honorary president of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has sparked some public debate, but current FAM president Datuk Joehari Ayub insists the move will not undermine his leadership. Hamidin, who served as FAM president from 2018 until stepping down earlier this year, became only the second person in the association's history to be bestowed the honorary title, following the late Sultan Ahmad Shah, who held the role for 30 years. The decision was formalised during FAM's extraordinary congress held yesterday, in accordance with Article 22 of the FAM statutes, which allows the title to be conferred on former presidents in recognition of their significant contributions to Malaysian football. While the honorary role comes without voting rights, it allows Hamidin to attend congress sessions and offer input in an advisory capacity. Some have criticised the move, citing past controversies and questioning the timing of the appointment. However, Joehari is adamant that the decision is not political but strategic. 'To be honest, this appointment is nothing personal,' said Joehari. 'Anybody can make assumptions or comments, but for us, we have to move forward. We believe Tan Sri Hamidin will add value to the organisation. That's how we feel.' Joehari emphasised that the honorary president's role is entirely separate from his own. 'We have different roles. Tan Sri will act more as an adviser, while I continue my duties as FAM president as usual. In fact, his presence could help improve decision-making across the board.' He added that Hamidin's vast network in global and regional football circles including FIFA, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), Asean Football Federation (AFF), as well as various government and private bodies, is a major asset to FAM. 'We need Tan Sri's connections with FIFA, AFF, AFC, the Malaysian government and also private entities. Seeing all these, we felt it was the right decision to appoint him as the honorary president,' said Joehari. The appointment received unanimous support from FAM's affiliates, with no objections raised during the congress. 'This is a lifelong position, but we'll still include it as a standing agenda item at every general meeting,' Joehari clarified. 'Everyone has their own credibility and this move is about enhancing ours.'

Hamidin returns to FAM as honourary president
The appointment was based on Hamidin's credibility, vast experience and significant contributions. 30 Jun 2025 03:20pm FAM President Datuk Mohd Joehari Mohd Ayub (centre) at a press conference after the 2025 FAM First EGM here today. Photo by Bernama SUBANG JAYA - Speculation over Tan Sri Hamidin Mohd Amin's return to the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has been put to rest following his appointment as honourary president during the association's Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) today. FAM president Datuk Mohd Joehari Mohd Ayub, who chaired the meeting, said the appointment was based on Hamidin's credibility, vast experience and significant contributions to the development of football both domestically and internationally over the past 30 years. Speculation over Hamidin's appointment as honorary president arose after he announced he would not defend his position as FAM president at the Election Congress in January. "We do need Tan Sri's presence, particularly given his extensive network with the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA), ASEAN Football Federation (AFF), Asian Football Confederation (AFC), as well as with government bodies and the private sector - we need those connections. "His appointment as honorary president also adds value to the current leadership of FAM,' he said at a press conference after the 2025 FAM First EGM here today. Photo by Bernama Mohd Joehari said there is no issue of overlapping powers between him as FAM president and Hamidin. "Our roles are different. Tan Sri's function is more advisory, and he also serves as an ambassador for FAM. "Like I said, it's not a matter of overshadowing or anything like that. What we see is how this can contribute positively to FAM - and to me, we have to remain objective,' he said. He said the appointment received unanimous support from all delegates present. Hamidin is the second person to be appointed to the post, as in 2014, the FAM Congress conferred the same title on the late Sultan Ahmad Shah, who led FAM from 1984 to 2014. - BERNAMA More Like This
