Al Batinah North sets green example
SUHAR, July 5
North Al Batinah Governorate continues to make steady progress in placing environmental protection and sustainable resource management at the heart of its development strategy. As part of its priorities under Oman Vision 2040, the region has launched numerous projects and programs to expand green spaces, combat pollution, and promote eco-friendly practices.
The total green area in North Al Batinah has now reached 1,505,750 square metres, with Shinas, Suwaiq, and Suhar leading in coverage. The governorate conducted around 153 environmental activities and 26 scientific research initiatives focused on soil, water, crop improvement, and plant protection.
Raising public awareness and building local capacity remain core priorities. Training workshops have been organised for farmers and technicians, emphasising sustainable agriculture and organic farming practices.
Shaikh Hamoud al Harassi, Head of the Environment Authority in Al Suwaiq, highlighted the region's ongoing environmental efforts, including its active contribution to the national campaign to plant 10 million native trees. 'As part of our outreach and awareness efforts, the authority conducted programmes targeting summer centers, local communities, and public councils in Al Khaboura and Al Suwaiq. Additionally, ecological field surveys were carried out to study marine ecosystems, wildlife habitats, and coral reefs,' he said.
The Environment Authority has also intensified field inspections, collecting over 133,000 environmental samples and conducting more than 80,000 site visits to ensure compliance with regulations and protect ecosystems.
Al Harassi added that the authority has engaged higher education graduates through workshops promoting environmental commitment. Developmental goals include studying the feasibility of installing solar panels in government institutions, while operational objectives involve monitoring air pollution through newly installed air quality stations near mining areas — all aimed at promoting sustainability and expanding eco-friendly spaces across the region.
Through these wide-ranging efforts, North Al Batinah is steadily building a model of sustainable development rooted in practical action, community engagement, and environmental responsibility. As climate and ecological concerns grow globally, the governorate's consistent work serves as a reminder that real change begins at the local level — with informed planning, committed leadership, and an engaged public.
