Lake Tahoe is getting murkier — and scientists don't know why

Lake Tahoe 's famously clear blue waters became noticeably murkier in 2024, ranking as the third least clear on record — and the worst in several years — according to a new report from UC Davis researchers who have monitored the lake for decades. The annual Lake Tahoe Clarity Report, released Monday by the university's Tahoe Environmental Research Center, found the lake's average clarity last year was 62.3 feet — nearly six feet shallower than in 2023. That level of clarity was surpassed in cloudiness only by 2021, when wildfire smoke blanketed the region, and 2017, a year marked by runoff-heavy storms. 'It's not, at this point, noticeably worse. But it's not getting better, and we need to find out why,' said Stephanie Hampton, director of the center and a professor at UC Davis, in a statement. Clarity is measured using a white Secchi disk, which researchers lower into the water to determine the depth at which it disappears. Since the late 1960s, when scientists began monitoring the lake, average clarity has declined by about 40 feet. In recent decades, government agencies and conservation groups have invested heavily in efforts to protect the lake's transparency — from restoring wetlands to improving stormwater systems. The report notes some success: more than 500,000 pounds of sediment are now prevented from reaching the lake each year. Still, summer clarity continues to deteriorate, and researchers suspect new, less understood factors may be driving the trend. 'It may be the lake is different than it was 20 years ago, when these policies and practices were implemented,' Hampson said. 'We need to investigate these particles again to find out what kind of particles they are. Are they still mostly sediment? Or are there more algae, wildfire ash or other particles? That may be key to understanding why water clarity is not improving.' One emerging theory is that microscopic plankton, too small to have been tracked in earlier studies, could be contributing to the persistent murkiness. As climate change ushers in longer, warmer summers, scientists warn that shifting conditions may be reshaping the lake's ecology. At the same time, they say that new development around the Tahoe Basin continues to stir debate about the region's ability to absorb growth without further degrading its signature waters. 'Science-driven policies have underpinned Lake Tahoe's protection for decades, and seeing lake clarity stabilize is an indicator that we are making progress,' said Julie Regan, executive director of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, in a statement. 'However, the lack of improvement is concerning, and we will continue to work closely with the science community to understand where to direct our management efforts next.'

Solar farm proponent Land Insights call Narrogin's application approval terms ‘problematic', delaying decision

The decision to approve one of six renewable energy projects in Narrogin has been delayed with a representative for the e-battery proponent calling the shire's conditions 'problematic' and 'unsound'. Shire of Narrogin president Leigh Ballard and councillor Graham Broad joined the Regional Development Assessment Panel on May 15 to discuss the shire's conditions for the proposed solar and battery hybrid project. The $400 million project will be located across 15 Lots on Contine and Parks roads, Great Southern Highway and Wanerie Road about 3.7km out of town. Panellists Dale Page and Mike Mouritz chose to defer the decision to approve the application for 30 days after Land Insights presenter Rebekah Hampson disputed nine of the shire's 27 conditions during the meeting. Ms Hampson said the conditions were 'problematic', 'unsound, not feasible or unreasonable' and 'superfluous and possibly conflicting' because they overlap with matters addressed in other specialist reports. The shire's 27 conditions include a vegetation buffer (condition 5) and a detailed proposal for any temporary or transient workforce accommodation (7). The shire also wants to be satisfied with the construction of vehicle access points before they are put into use (10). Before the project breaks ground, the shire wants a decommissioning and rehabilitation plan outline with a strategy for decommissioning the facility and rehabilitation of the site at the end of its life (11) and a revised bushfire management plan (16). The conditions also include less obvious requirements, including a plan to invest in a public art project (12), annual commitments to a community enhancements fund (13, 14), and the upgrade and sealing of Contine and Parks roads (21). Ms Hampson asked to reword condition five to establishing plant screening after construction is complete and remove condition 3, which she said is already covered in the Traffic Index Statement. She said conditions 10 and 11 'do not relate to this specific application', and conditions 12, 13, 14 and 16 are 'not necessary and should be removed'. 'Condition 12 requires a public art contribution, which has no foundation in the shire planning profit policy,' Ms Hampson said. 'Condition 13 and 14 require a contribution to a yet to be established community enhancement fund, raising questions about its justification, fairness and legality. 'And there is currently no State planning framework that applies to the creation of these funds. 'However, the proponent is happy outside of the planning application to have negotiations with the shire to establish this.' Ms Hampson said the proponent should not contribute to the Contine and Parks roads upgrades because there will be no heavy vehicles and limited use on the roads. Ms Page said it is standard for the panel to receive requests, but the big amount makes the decision 'messy' and 'things slip through the cracks', leading to the deferral. A refreshed application report will be reviewed by the panel in mid-June for the final decision.

He had labored hard in spring training and received an Opening Day spot on their roster. It seemed like things were looking up, but they quickly didn't. Hampson played horribly on offense. UKGI taps J.P. Morgan veteran for corporate finance leadership role

May 20 (Reuters) - State-owned UK Government Investments (UKGI) on Tuesday appointed veteran J.P. Morgan banker Harry Hampson as Director of Corporate Finance. UKGI is the British government's hub for corporate finance and governance, managing the state's shareholdings in major companies and advising on corporate finance matters, among other responsibilities. Hampson's appointment comes at a crucial time for the British government which has been ramping up reforms to attract more investments and boost the country's economic growth. According to an internal memo seen by Reuters, Hampson left the U.S. bank after a 37-year tenure where he held numerous senior leadership roles across the firm, having been the Global Chair of Investment Banking most recently.

Royal Mail warning issued over parcel delivery text scam

The scam begins with a text message claiming a parcel delivery attempt has failed. It contains a link to reschedule or pay a small fee - often just £1.99 or £2.99. But the link leads to a fake Royal Mail website designed to steal personal and financial details. Paul Hampson, CEO of fraud and scams experts CEL Solicitors, said: 'It's terrifyingly believable. "These messages look and sound exactly like the real thing, and with so many of us expecting parcels at any given time, it's incredibly easy to fall for.' Once a victim clicks the link and enters their information, scammers often follow up with a phone call, pretending to be from the victim's bank. 'They'll say your account has been compromised and ask you to transfer your money to a 'safe' account,' Mr Hampson explained. 'This is where people lose thousands - it's sophisticated and cruel.' This type of scam has resurfaced repeatedly over the past few years, especially during lockdown and peak delivery periods like Christmas, Black Friday and the summer sales. 'We saw this exact scam go viral back in 2021, and sadly it's just as effective now,' Mr Hampson said. 'Scammers recycle what works - they tweak the details, but the core tactic is the same. 'The branding is spot-on, the language feels official, and the sense of urgency is designed to bypass your common sense. 'Even people who think they'd never fall for a scam can be caught off guard.' CEL Solicitors has seen a marked rise in delivery-related scams over the past 12 months, with losses ranging from hundreds to tens of thousands of pounds. Mr Hampson's advice is clear: don't click the link. 'If you receive a message like this, go directly to the official Royal Mail website and track your delivery there. "Never give out your details via a text link.' He also urges the public to report scam messages by forwarding them to 7726, a free service used by mobile networks to investigate fraud. 'Scammers rely on panic and speed,' he said. 'If something doesn't feel right, slow down, double-check, and always trust your instincts.'
