Exhibition showcases an era where arts education flourished

history arts 41 minutes ago Following WWII, there was a strong push and a solid foundation to provide arts education to both teachers and children in schools. Art advisers supported and inspired teachers while many early-career artists trained at The Auckland College of Education; which later become the Faculty of Education and would merge with Auckland University. Practices included painting, print-making, weaving and ceramics. The university would then buy these artworks and as a result now has a considerable collection which is currently on display in an exhibition called Hands On at the Auckland University General Library until 16 July. The collection includes works by more than 100 artists including Len Castle, Barry Brickell and Ralph Hotere. But in 1989, after the introduction of Tomorrow's Schools, the style of education changed to focus more on measurable outcomes, set standards and less on creativity. In the past 20 years there's been further reduction in time allocated to arts education and trainee teachers to gain experience in the arts leading to a decline in focus on the arts within schools. That level of support and training for teachers is no longer there. This is despite international evidence showing arts-rich schools do better. 'Hands On' celebrates a time when arts education flourished, was prioritised and more heavily integrated into the wider school curriculum. Auckland University Arts Curator, Madeleine Gifford, speaks to Culture 101 about the exhibition.

Feral Kitten Acting Like 'Spicy Chicken Nugget' During Rescue Has People Smitten

Rescuing animals in need requires patience and a thick skin, especially because these animals are usually scared and leery of their rescuers. TikToker Krista is a cat rescuer who recently rescued the cutest - and spiciest - little black and white kitten you've ever seen! Make sure your sound is on so you can hear the lil' firecracker hissing and growling - signs meant to scare Krista away from the tough and tiny beast. The kitten is absolutely adorable, and I'm sure it won't take Krista long to find the baby a forever home! I watched this video at least three times because I can't get enough of what Krista calls "a spicy chicken nugget"! Talk about cuteness overload! I know the kitten was afraid, and I wonder why they didn't just run off instead of standing their ground! I wasn't the only one smitten with the kitten; viewers of Krista's video left over 4 thousand comments! People really loved this feisty feline! Commenter @bleesknees got more than 50 thousand likes when they said, "Hisses get kisses." @Ambar Rodriquez got nearly 46 thousand likes when she pointed out, "Kittens are hilarious because they will do everything when they're scared but run." @Hands-On wasn't wrong when they said, "Angry kittens are too cute to take seriously lol!" and another added, "Attack 100% Danger 0%." Viewer @ shared, "So scary. Hims got big feelings." @Brenda Baker agreed, " He's so brave but so scared." If you ever come across a feral kitten, helping them isn't as hard as you might think. Depending on their age, sometimes they will come right to you if you use a low, soothing voice. Other times, you might need a lure, and as you probably guessed, food or treats almost always work. Some people also have success with toys or a laser pointer to get the kitten's attention and also take their attention off of you while they play so that you can swoop down and pick it up. The Feral Cat Coalition shares, "Kittens can be captured and tamed, but it's best to do so when they are around 4 to 6 weeks old." Even if you don't plan to adopt or foster the kitten, it has a better chance of finding a home if you take it to a shelter or rescue since the kitten won't be completely feral yet.
