NA panel orders sugar price probe

The National Assembly Standing Committee on Commerce met Monday at Parliament House under the chairmanship of MNA Muhammad Jawed Hanif Khan. It adopted a sub-committee report on long-outstanding receivables of the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) and was informed that Rs15 billion had been released via the Ministry of Commerce to aid TCP's recovery. Addressing SRO 760's suspension and the Gems and Jewellery Association, the Committee appreciated the ministry's active efforts and noted assurances of swift resolution. In view of rising sugar prices and the government's decision to import sugar, Hanif expressed concern over profiteering and consumer vulnerability. A sub-committee was formed to investigate and report within 15 days. The Committee discussed Pakistan's National Tariff Policy and questioned the rationale for lower taxes on large cars and higher on small vehicles. It also supported liberalising imports of raw materials and machinery to aid industry.

Seventh arrest: Man held for building road in Nuh Aravalis

Gurgaon: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Monday made the seventh arrest in the illegal road construction case in the protected Aravali area near Basai Meo village, under Ferozepur Jhirka police station limits. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now However, the three main accused, former sarpanch Hanif, Shaukat, and Sabir, remain absconding, despite a Rs 50,000 reward each on their heads. Sakeel, the latest arrestee, is a resident of the village. He allegedly used his machinery, including a JCB, three road construction machines, and a tractor, for laying two illegal 33-foot-wide roads by pouring concrete without any administrative approval. These roads lead directly into the ecologically sensitive Aravali hills. During interrogation, he disclosed that he was paid by Hanif for carrying out the work. Authorities said Sakeel will be produced in court and taken on remand for further questioning. Earlier, the ACB arrested six persons, including three retired officials from the consolidation department and two private individuals, Sher Mohammad, Mohammad Latif, and Bijendra Rana, who was the district revenue officer (DRO) in 2024, and held additional charge as the consolidation officer (chakbandi adhikari). Basai Meo has been under scrutiny following revelations that illegal road construction and mining were carried out in forest and agricultural land, directly violating Supreme Court directives and environmental norms. The CEC report confirmed the illegal construction of a 1.5km road, allegedly created to facilitate transportation for illegal stone mining. The committee also noted inaction from the local panchayat and raised questions about the role of elected representatives. The Haryana govt, instead of focusing solely on internal enforcement, petitioned the Supreme Court to extend the mining ban 5km into Rajasthan, claiming illegal operations just across the border were spilling into Haryana.

Over 6 million in Jakarta suffer respiratory illness amid air pollution

JAKARTA: Over 6 million people in Indonesia's capital Jakarta have been affected by acute respiratory infections due to worsening air pollution, according to the country's environment minister. Hanif Faisol Nurofiq said Wednesday that the air quality in parts of Jakarta reached hazardous levels, with pollution in the northern districts spiking to dangerous highs by midday. Real-time data from air quality apps like IQAir and public monitoring stations confirmed the deteriorating conditions. 'The main sources of Jakarta's air pollution are industrial emissions and container trucks,' Hanif said. Around 6,800 industrial chimneys are registered in the capital, though the actual number may be higher due to unlicensed operations. 'We've begun cracking down on open burning activities, especially in metallurgy and ore smelting industries,' he added. The health impact is severe, with preliminary data showing over 6 million people in Jakarta developing respiratory symptoms, including acute infections that could worsen existing conditions. A 2023 study by the US National Library of Medicine found that Jakarta's air pollution, particularly from fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ground-level ozone (O₃), causes significant health burdens. The study linked poor air quality to over 7,000 adverse health outcomes in children, more than 10,000 premature deaths, and over 5,000 hospitalisations annually. - Bernama, Anadolu

Aku, Ayah dan Muzik brings fresh perspective to local film scene

Published on: Friday, July 04, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jul 04, 2025 Text Size: Hanis and the film's production team. KOTA KINABALU: Sabahan director Hanif Jeff has made his mark with Aku, Ayah dan Muzik , a supertelefilm that offers a fresh take on local storytelling. The 29-year-old filmmaker's work centres on Noah, a young man's emotional journey to find his estranged father in Sabah. Advertisement Featuring actors such as Fimie Don, Enn Xaviera, AD Vico and Jovenea Jim, the film blends family themes with a strong cultural backdrop. Its soundtrack, Bisikan Waktu , mixes traditional Sabahan instruments with modern music to enhance the film's emotional depth. Originally a short film finalist in the BMW Shorties, Hanif expanded the story to explore heavier themes like grief and identity. He described the supertelefilm as a personal 'redemption' to revisit ideas he had omitted due to time constraints in the original version. The story draws inspiration from Hanif's own life and reflects family dynamics in Sabah, including reconnecting across religious divides. Filmed in locations such as Kota Kinabalu, Kota Belud and Kundasang, it highlights both the natural beauty and emotional stillness of Sabah. Hanif said the project faced financial constraints, with the team producing it on a tight budget and no profit, driven purely by passion. Production spanned about two months, with strong support from friends and crew who kept morale high despite occasional challenges. Fimie Don was cast as Noah after impressing Hanif in a music video, eventually exceeding expectations in bringing the role to life. Backed by a RM100,000 grant from Finas, the telefilm airs on TV1 and RTMKlik at 9pm tomorrow (Saturday), with Hanif eyeing future festivals and a full-length adaptation. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Negeri Sembilan RTD says passengers cite weak excuses in seat belt operation

SEREMBAN: Passengers cited excuses such as unfamiliarity, never having used seatbelts, or being a hassle during the Road Transport Department's (RTD) special seatbelt operation targeting express and tour buses across Negeri Sembilan since yesterday. State RTD director Hanif Yusabra Yusuf said inspections on 43 buses resulted in seven passengers aged 19 and above being issued RM300 compounds for failing to comply with the seatbelt requirement. 'Wearing a seatbelt is crucial. It can save lives and reduce the risk of serious injury in the event of a road accident. 'From our checks so far, overall compliance among drivers and passengers has been encouraging. Awareness is improving, and we hope this continues,' he told reporters after inspecting the operation at Terminal One bus station here today. Hanif also advised bus operators to ensure all buses are properly equipped with functioning seatbelts and to consistently remind passengers to wear them for their safety. He added that RTD will deploy undercover teams throughout the month-long operation to identify drivers or passengers breaching the regulations.
