Negeri Sembilan RTD says passengers cite weak excuses in seat belt operation
SEREMBAN: Passengers cited excuses such as unfamiliarity, never having used seatbelts, or being a hassle during the Road Transport Department's (RTD) special seatbelt operation targeting express and tour buses across Negeri Sembilan since yesterday. State RTD director Hanif Yusabra Yusuf said inspections on 43 buses resulted in seven passengers aged 19 and above being issued RM300 compounds for failing to comply with the seatbelt requirement. 'Wearing a seatbelt is crucial. It can save lives and reduce the risk of serious injury in the event of a road accident. 'From our checks so far, overall compliance among drivers and passengers has been encouraging. Awareness is improving, and we hope this continues,' he told reporters after inspecting the operation at Terminal One bus station here today. Hanif also advised bus operators to ensure all buses are properly equipped with functioning seatbelts and to consistently remind passengers to wear them for their safety. He added that RTD will deploy undercover teams throughout the month-long operation to identify drivers or passengers breaching the regulations.

Govt bans import of dummy seatbelt buckles starting Dec 31
KUALA LUMPUR: The government has banned the import of dummy seatbelt buckles — devices used to disable seatbelt warning systems — effective Dec 31. The ban, part of the Customs (Prohibition of Imports) (Amendment) (No. 2) Order 2025, applies to all countries without exception. It also covers seatbelt alarm deactivators, clip extenders, and other similar devices designed to bypass safety alerts by inserting them into seatbelt slots. These accessories compromise vehicle safety by silencing warning systems, often leading drivers and passengers to forgo seatbelts — a major risk factor in road accidents. On Feb 17, the Transport Ministry said it was working with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry to halt the circulation of such products. Transport Minister Anthony Loke warned that using dummy buckles violates road safety regulations and promotes dangerous driving habits. During the Chinese New Year Special Operation, Negri Sembilan Road Transport Department director Hanif Yusabra Yusuf said that failing to wear seatbelts was the top offence, with 195 summonses issued. More than 30 per cent of these cases involved dummy buckles.

18 school vans seized in Negri Sembilan crackdown
SEREMBAN: Eighteen school vans were seized by the Negri Sembilan Road Transport Department (RTD) during a state-wide crackdown targeting serious breaches that could endanger the safety of students. The operation, known as Ops Khas Van Haram, uncovered various infringements, including vehicles operating without permits, expired motor vehicle licences, and lapses in insurance and roadworthiness certificates. The crackdown was carried out yesterday in response to public complaints and intelligence reports. Negri Sembilan RTD director Hanif Yusabra Yusuf said the operation, which ran from 5am to 3pm, uncovered 26 vans operating without valid permits. "This operation was launched in response to public complaints and intelligence regarding a rise in the use of private vans for illegal commercial purposes," he said in a statement. "This includes transporting school pupils. Such activities not only violate the law but also pose serious safety risks to passengers," he added. Enforcement teams inspected 57 vehicles suspected of operating illegally across Seremban, Rembau, Kuala Pilah and Jempol. "A total of 22 summons notices were issued for various infractions. More significantly, 18 vans were seized under provisions of the Road Transport Act 1987 for further investigation," Hanif said. He added that the most common breach was the misuse of motor vehicle licences, with 26 cases recorded. Other violations included 10 cases involving expired motor vehicle licences and eight cases where vehicles were operating without valid insurance. Hanif said six vans were found with expired Puspakom inspection certificates, casting serious doubt on the roadworthiness of the vehicles. "In terms of driver qualification, we also detected four cases of individuals driving without a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) licence, and one case involving an expired PSV licence," he said.
