Market town described as UK's 'little Ibiza' that's one of the happiest places to live

The historic town was named as the sixth "happiest places to live in the country" by Rightmove in its Happy Home Index. A quaint town boasts cosy pubs, boutique shops and a rich history. Skipton, with its charming cobbled streets and bustling high street, is an ideal destination for those seeking a day trip with plenty to explore. ‌ This small town, south of the Yorkshire Dales, was recently ranked as the sixth " happiest places to live in the country" by Rightmove in its 2024 Happy Home Index. ‌ The annual survey, which has been conducted for 13 years, gauges residents' satisfaction with their area based on various happiness factors. ‌ Intriguingly, this North Yorkshire town has also earned the nickname "little Ibiza". The town's Keighley Road "booms out" club music every week from 6pm until 3am, with "the nightclub continuing this until 5am". Hannah Reese, of the Liverpool Echo, said of her visit to the town: "My visit to the town didn't quite feel like a trip to sunny Spain, but there was still plenty to do." There were ample parking spaces available around the town centre, however, she and her partner opted for the Bailey Car Park - a bargain at under £5 for the entire day. ‌ Adjacent to the car park is the 900 year old Skipton castle, reputed to be one of the most well-preserved medieval fortresses in England. Entry for adults is priced at £12.80 and visitors can explore the banqueting hall, dungeons and other rooms. Skipton Market, a historic gem nestled on the High Street, operates four days a week, offering visitors an array of local meats, cheeses and Yorkshire-made clothing. ‌ Dating back to medieval times, the market hosts a rotating set of traders, ensuring each Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday (10am to 4pm) offers a unique experience. Hannah said: "The high street itself is filled with a mix of independent shops, cosy pubs and cafes. We stopped off for some food in Cock and Bottle, which was a former 18th century coaching inn. "There is a selection of classic, homely pub grub served on its menu, all sourced from local suppliers - including the crisp. ‌ "I went for the steak and ale pie served with chips and vegetables (£18), which came in a delicious handmade short crust pastry. The cosy "The pub is one of 18 pubs and bars featured on the Skipton Ale Trail. The 18-stop trail is made up of everything from sports bars to country pubs. Sadly, we had to give this a miss having driven to the town for the day." ‌ Fortunately they managed to explore a different part of Skipton by embarking on a trip on the Leeds Liverpool canal. The one-hour canal boat tour, complete with commentary from award-winning comedian Dave Spikey - known for Phoenix Nights - guides visitors through Skipton's intriguing history. The canal boat also comes equipped with a toilet and food and drink facilities. Hannah added: "We finished the day trip with a walk through the cobbled streets, having a nose at all of the shops and cafes that make up the small town centre. We also visited Robertshaw's Farm shop, just on the outskirts of the town. "The shop has operated since 1929 and is home to an award-winning butchers, delicatessen and greengrocers. We bought some cream cakes as a treat with a cup of tea for when we arrived home - they were stunning."

'I tried pizza vending machine in France and was floored by how long it took'

A woman showed the process of getting a pizza from a vending machine in France, and she was left seriously shocked by the results and the time it took to get her food Imagine craving a pizza and being able to go and get a hot one made by a machine at the side of the road? That's exactly what one woman did when she was on holiday in France and spotted a pizza vending machine. Hannah, who posts on TikTok as @thrivingwithhannah, explained that she'd "pulled over at the side of the road" to give the pizza a go. ‌ She shared that they'd already had dinner, but she wanted to try it anyway, so her followers could "see what it does". Hannah opted for La Reine, which is a classic pizza featuring ham, mushrooms, and black olives, and she chose it to be hot, as opposed to cold. ‌ ‌ At this point, she probably wasn't expecting much, and many in the comments were wondering how the vending machine even works. She paid €12 (£10.36) for the pizza, and there was a "little countdown going," and then after about four minutes, the pizza popped out of the hatch. Hannah joked: "They've actually set up a little table here so people can enjoy their pizza at the side of the road in a civilised manner". ‌ The shiny circular foil packaging was encasing the pizza, and she said she was going to open it up. When she did, Hannah said: "That looks very nice," and it was time for the definitive taste test. She only had two sporks, so struggled slightly to eat it, but she took some of the centre of the pizza and tried it. The verdict? "That's really good," she admitted. ‌ Hannah did note that it wasn't "boiling hot," but it was "very warm" and was worth a try "if you're travelling in France this summer". Someone in the comments wrote: "This is probably going to make people question my ability to home educate my children… but are there people inside?" Another responded: "Hahaha crying. I assume they're dispensed by a machine and then heated. I used to think there were little ant-sized people in the radio when I was a kid making all the music". ‌ So, how do pizza vending machines actually work? You order the pizza using a touchscreen to select their pizza type, size, and sometimes extra toppings. Payment is made via card, mobile payment, or sometimes cash. The machine stores pre-prepared pizza bases (dough), sauces, cheese, and toppings in refrigerated compartments. Once an order is placed, robotic arms or automated dispensers assemble the pizza by adding sauce, cheese, and chosen toppings onto the dough. The assembled pizza is moved into a built-in oven (usually convection or infrared), where it is cooked at high temperatures for a few minutes (typically 3–5 minutes). ‌ Sensors monitor the cooking process to ensure the pizza is cooked evenly. After cooking, the pizza is placed into a box or tray by the machine. The boxed pizza is delivered to a retrieval slot where the customer can collect it. Many machines have self-cleaning cycles and are regularly restocked and maintained by operators.

Millworkers' reunion a celebration of friends

Twenty-five years after more than 150 jobs were lost at the closing of the Mataura paper mill, two retired boilermen are holding a reunion to reconnect. Ex-boilermen Ray Hannah and Graham "Noddy" Harris are hosting a reunion not to focus on the loss of industry, but on the strong friendships made along the way. "It's just a chance for people that haven't seen each other for a while to get together to have a chat and catch up," Mr Hannah said. "Because you made some pretty invaluable friendships through that workplace." Mr Hannah started working at the Carter Holt Harvey Mill in 1979, when he was 21, and Mr Harris came on board four years later. Both were with the mill up until it closed on August 18, 2000. With two machines running, the mill produced copy paper and wallpaper backing. It was also known for its specialty Mataura Falls bond paper. "We were renowned for our Mataura Falls pulp, one of the best papers that you could get," Mr Harris said. The copy paper used pulp from overseas. The cost of importing it and then exporting the finished product from the bottom of the country was too high, he said. The cost of import-export, plus globalisation, shut down the mill. "The Asian market killed it basically," he said. Mr Hannah said he was in denial about the closure at the time and when told they were having a final meeting, he just walked by thinking it was a joke. The wages at the mill were so high, no-one ever wanted to leave, Mr Harris said. When it shut down, he remembered people were worried about where their next job would come from, with over 150 people looking all at once. Everything worked out in the end and Mr Harris went straight down the road to work for Fonterra, he said. "Everybody found work, that wanted work," he said. Mr Harris also remembered the 1984 flood, that affected the river-side mill, as well as a fire in 1987, that was reported at the time as destroying $2 million of pulp. After the '87 fire The Ensign reported police in Gore believed it had been deliberately lit. The reunited workers will hopefully be reminiscing the good times, more than the bad, Mr Hannah said. "It's more about rekindling friendships and stuff like that, just reconnecting." The Carter Holt Harvey mill reunion will be an afternoon tea held at the Gore RSA on August 23, at 1.30pm, with light snacks and speakers, including Jeff Rankin, manager of the mill for some years. Cover charge is $10 a head.

Celebrity SAS star 'quits just hours into first day of filming' as show to return this weekend

Celebrity SAS Who Dares Win 2025 is set to return this weekend but one star has reportedly already quit the gruelling Channel 4 show. A Celebrity SAS Who Dares Win 2025 star has reportedly 'quit the show and walked off set' just hours into the first day of filming. The full celebrity line up for the upcoming seventh season of the show, which returns this weekend on Sunday August 3, was revealed earlier this week. ‌ Among the famous faces competing in the gruelling challenges this year is S Club star and actress Hannah Spearritt. The 44-year-old reportedly walked away from the Channel 4 show during the first day of filming. ‌ Fans will reportedly see Hannah struggle in the very early stages before deciding to bow out, The Sun reports. A source told MailOnline: "Hannah had pretty much exhausted all of her connections within the industry before she left for Costa Rica. ‌ "She no longer speaks to her band mates and has now completely shut herself off from that world. The final straw came last summer when she took part in Celebrity SAS." The insider explained that Hannah "truly believed" a stint on the programme could "turn things around for her". ‌ However, they added: "But sadly she just couldn't hack it and walked on the first day. It was all rather embarrassing." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today. A representative for Celebrity SAS Who Dares Wins has declined to comment on the situation. ‌ Earlier this year, S Club star Hannah disclosed her new life as a "survivalist and prepper" in the Costa Rican jungle. The singer relocated in January alongside partner Adam Thomas and their children, to start a new life after leaving the UK. Taking to Instagram, Hannah described herself as "Prepper, survivalist and creator now living the uninhibited jungle life." ‌ She captioned a post: "Looking out to new beginnings at our new home! "Next on the menu is to learn permaculture… and have a laugh at ourselves filming the planting of the fruit forest!" ‌ Ahead of their life changing move, Hannah said: "That's the dream, to move to Costa Rica and buy some land or a farm and live the simple life with the girls." In 2022, she decided to set up Warth & Fire cafe in Twickenham, South West London with her partner Adam. However, the cafe was never fully ready to open and a pal of the singer previously revealed that she was selling up amid rising costs. ‌ They told The Sun: "It's the latest in a sequence of setbacks. The new plan is selling up and moving to Costa Rica to live off the land." This year's Celebrity SAS 2025 line up includes a raft of famous faces including Love Island stars, Premier League footballers, music stars, a drag queen and even one famous drugs mule. Celebrity SAS Who Dares Win 2025 returns to Channel 4 on Sunday, August 3 at 9pm.
