Bike theft leads police to inert grenade at the University of Waterloo
The University of Waterloo on July 22, 2025. (Hannah Schmidt/CTV News) Waterloo Regional Police say an inert grenade was found on an alleged bike thief at the University of Waterloo. Early Tuesday morning, University of Waterloo Special Constables spotted a man riding a bicycle on campus. That same bike had been reported stolen. The Special Constables arrested the man. During a subsequent search, they realized the man was carrying an inert grenade. Waterloo Regional Police said their officers were called to the campus around 6 a.m. and determined there were no public safety concerns. The 36-year-old Cambridge man was charged with two counts of possessing stolen goods under $5,000, possession of identity documents and possession of break and enter tools.

Suspect arrested in taxi driver assault in Brantford

(Hannah Schmidt/CTV News) A man is facing weapons and robbery charges after the Brantford Police Service received multiple reports of a man assaulting a taxi driver on the road. Officers were called to intersection of West Street and Farringford Drive on Friday around 5:50 p.m. When they arrived, they found and arrested a 27-year-old man. He has been charged with robbery, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and uttering threats to cause death.

Man killed in Cambridge motel fire
The Super 8 motel on Hespeler Road in Cambridge on July 21, 2025. (Hannah Schmidt/CTV News) A 53-year-old man has died following a fire at a Cambridge motel. Crews with the Cambridge Fire Department were called to the Super 8 on Hespeler Road around 9:45 a.m. Sunday. The man, who has not been identified, was taken to a local hospital where Waterloo Regional Police said he was pronounced dead. It has now been deemed accidental. According to police, the Ontario Fire Marshall is leading the investigation.

Brantford man arrested for early morning stabbing

(Hannah Schmidt/CTV News) A Brantford man is facing assault and weapons charges after police were called to a stabbing. Brantford Police Service officers were called to the Victoria Park area, near Wellington Street and Market Street, on Friday around 1:20 a.m. They were told a man approached a male victim, assaulted him and stabbed him. Police said the suspect ran off to a nearby apartment building on Wellington Street and walked into an unlocked apartment in an attempt to hide from police. Officers, with the help of the K9 unit, located the suspect and arrested him without incident. A knife was seized. The victim was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A 27-year-old Brantford man has been charged with assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm, two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and being unlawfully in a dwelling.

Three people arrested, one still wanted, for abduction and death of Cambridge man
A man from Cambridge, Ont. has died in a crash after police said he was abducted. CTV's Hannah Schmidt has more on the ongoing investigation. Ontario Provincial Police have made three arrests and are trying to track down another suspect wanted for the kidnapping and death of a Cambridge man. On May 14, first responders were called to a two-vehicle crash on the Hanlon Parkway, north of Stone Road, around 6 p.m. A 40-year-old man from Cambridge was found with life-threatening injuries. He was taken to hospital by ambulance and later pronounced dead. Jacob Schafer, a 20-year-old from Guelph, was taken into police custody on June 29. Griffin Kerfoot, a 19-year-old from Elora, and an unnamed 16-year-old from Guelph were both arrested on July 2. All three were charged with kidnapping and assault with a weapon. An arrest warrant was also issued for Ian Brown, a 51-year-old man from Guelph, on charges of kidnapping and assault with a weapon.
