REUTERS/Annegret Hilse/File Photo (Reuters) -Meta Platforms is seeking to raise $29 billion from private capital firms to build artificial intelligence data centers in the U.S., the Financial Times reported on Friday. The Facebook-parent has advanced discussions with private credit investors including Apollo Global Management, KKR, Brookfield, Carlyle and Pimco, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter. Meta is looking to raise $3 billion in equity and $26 billion in debt, the report said, adding that the company is debating how to structure the fundraising and may also seek to raise more capital. Such a fundraising comes at a time when Meta has doubled down its commitment to artificial intelligence, including a $14.8 billion investment in startup Scale AI. Meta, Apollo Global, KKR, Brookfield, Carlyle and Pimco did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment. Meta was working with its advisers at Morgan Stanley to arrange the financing, and it was considering ways that could make the debt more easily tradeable once it was issued, the FT report said. Microsoft's next-gen AI chip production delayed to 2026, The Information reports

REUTERS/Fabian Bimmer/File Photo (Reuters) -Microsoft's next-generation Maia AI chip is facing a delay of at least six months, pushing its mass production to 2026 from 2025, The Information reported on Friday, citing three people involved in the effort. When the chip, code-named Braga, goes into production, it is expected to fall well short of the performance of Nvidia's Blackwell chip that was released late last year, the report said. Microsoft had hoped to use the Braga chip in its data centers this year, the report said, adding that unanticipated changes to its design, staffing constraints and high turnover were contributing to the delay. Microsoft did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Like its Big Tech peers, Microsoft has focused heavily on developing custom processors for artificial intelligence operations and general purpose applications, a move that would help reduce the tech giant's reliance on pricey Nvidia chips. Cloud rivals Amazon and Alphabet's Google have both raced to develop chips in-house, customized for their specific needs with the goal of improving performance and reducing costs. Microsoft had introduced the Maia chip in November 2023, but has lagged its peers in ramping it up to scale. Google, meanwhile, has seen success with its custom AI chips - called Tensor Processing Units - and in April unveiled its seventh-generation AI chip designed to speed the performance of AI applications. Amazon in December also unveiled its next-generation AI chip Trainium3 that is set to be released late this year. (Reporting by Deborah Sophia in Bengaluru; Editing by Shailesh Kuber)

REUTERS/Annegret Hilse/File Photo (Reuters) -Meta Platforms is in talks to hire former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman to join the Facebook parent's AI efforts, The Information reported on Wednesday, citing a person familiar with the matter. The social media giant is also in discussion with Daniel Gross, Friedman's partner in the investment fund NFDG, about joining the company to work on AI, the report added. Meta did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. The company is also in talks to partially buy out NFDG, the report said. Big tech companies are doubling down on AI partnerships and investment to stay ahead in the race for dominance. Meta announced a $14.8 billion investment in Scale AI last week, its second-largest investment to date. The company hired Scale AI CEO, Alexandr Wang, to work with Meta and lead its new superintelligence unit. Microsoft lays out data protection plans for European cloud customers

FILE PHOTO: A Microsoft sign is pictured at a trade fair in Hannover Messe, in Hanover, Germany, April 22, 2024. REUTERS/Annegret Hilse/File Photo STOCKHOLM (Reuters) -Microsoft on Monday said data stored by its European cloud customers would stay in Europe, under European Law, with operations controlled by its local personnel, and under full control of customers. European companies and governments have been increasingly worrying about their data being moved outside the continent into the hands of other countries such as the U.S., pushing the American companies such as Microsoft to announce safeguards. Microsoft in April laid out plans to protect user data as it expands its cloud and AI infrastructure in Europe, including respecting European laws seeking to rein in the power of large technology companies. On Monday, the company said all remote access by Microsoft engineers to the systems that store and process European data would be approved and monitored by European resident personnel in real-time. Microsoft said its sovereign private cloud is in preview mode currently and will be generally available later this year.
