Halstenberg, 33, returned to boyhood club Hanover in 2023 from Leipzig and will bid farewell in the second division finale on May 18 at Hertha Berlin. He is to be honoured at Hanover's last home game on Sunday against Greuther Fürth. Advertisement Halstenberg came to Leipzig in 2015 from St Pauli and rose into the national team team where he won nine caps and scored one goal. He has played 165 Bundesliga matches and 20 in the Champions League for Leipzig. "I am proud of what I have achieved: I managed to have many games at top level, compte against outstanding players, and play for the national team," he said in a video messaage. He said "my career would not have been complete without the return" to Hanover which also came for family reasons. "Now the moment has come when I simply feel that it's enough. I'm looking forward to spending time with my family, who have often had to take a back seat," Halstenberg said.
