National Doctors Day 2025: History And Significance
A legendary physician and the second Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr Roy was born on July 1, 1882. He is renowned for his significant medical contribution and establishment of various institutions, including the foundation of the Indian Medical Association and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi.
He was awarded the Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian honour, in 1961. Dr Roy died a year later at the age of 80. In the year 1991, the Indian government declared July 1 as National Doctors Day in his memory.
The day is used to express gratitude towards doctors by recognising their precious efforts towards shaping the healthcare system of the country. In recent years, doctors and medical experts put their lives on the line to serve the nation at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and also helped ease the drive and access for vaccination across the country.
