Matthew Goode's 'dark pitch' ruined his Bond chances
Matthew Goode's 'really dark' pitch got him dropped from James Bond auditions. Before Daniel Craig was cast as the suave spy in 2006's 'Casino Royale', a host of actors including Henry Cavill, Rupert Friend and Sam Worthington were tipped for the part and Goode, 47, has admitted he didn't even get an audition after his meeting with franchise producer Barbara Broccoli went terribly wrong. Speaking on the 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast, Matthew shared: 'I didn't audition. I went in and met Barbara [Broccoli]. It was quite a funny one because - and she's gorgeous and just a lovely, lovely person - she was like, 'So what's your idea for Bond?' And I was like, 'My idea for Bond. We've gotta take it back to the books, you know? Really, we absolutely have to make this guy an alcoholic, a drug addict. He hates himself. He hates women. He hates a lot of people. He's in deep pain. He's brilliant at killing people.' 'I think by the end of the interview, she was like, 'Mhmm. Next.' I wanted to make it really dark, but what I should have said was, 'But also incredibly charming.'' Meanwhile, Broccoli and co-producer Michael G. Wilson sold the creative rights to the Bond franchise to Amazon MGM Studios earlier this year. Denis Villeneuve has been announced as the director of the next movie but a successor to Craig has yet to be appointed.

Matthew Goode says he didn't get a James Bond audition for this ‘dark' reason
Matthew Goode knows exactly why he isn't a Martini-sipping 007. The English actor, 47, recently revealed he didn't land the role of James Bond – much less receive an audition. 'I didn't audition. I went in and met Barbara [Broccoli],' Goode said while on Thursday's episode of the 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast. 9 Matthew Goode talks James Bond. JoshHorowitz/YouTube Broccoli, 65, along with her brother Michael G. Wilson, 83, were the producers of the Bond franchise before they relinquished creative control of the films to Amazon MGM Studios for a reported $1 billion in February. 'I didn't get to the audition,' Goode explained, 'but it was quite a funny one because — and she's gorgeous and just a lovely, lovely person — she was like, 'So what's your idea for Bond?' The French-Canadian filmmaker, 57, said in a statement, 'I'm a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he's sacred territory.' 'I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. That same month, Denise Richards, who starred as Dr. Christmas Jones alongside Brosnan, 72, in the 1999 action/thriller 'The World Is Not Enough' threw her idea for Bond into the hat. In March, Brosnan said it's a 'given' that the next man to suit up must be British. He added that it was also the 'right decision' for the franchise to be given to Amazon. 'It takes great courage for them to let go,' Brosnan expressed to the Telegraph. 'I hope that [Amazon] handles the work and the character with dignity and imagination and respect.' 'In this world that is moving so fast now, at the speed of light, [the takeover] does come with a certain lament,' Brosnan continued. 'I thought it was coming for some time, I guess, but I think it was the right decision for Barbara and Michael.'

Sam Rockwell Says He Still Gets Residual Checks for ‘Lean on Me' 'Even Though I'm Not in It'
Sam Rockwell may not actually be in the 1989 film Lean on Me, but he's still paid for the role he almost had. The Oscar winner recently shared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he, Michael Imperioli and Kevin Corrigan drove together in a van to New Jersey to audition for a single line in the movie, starring Morgan Freeman and Beverly Todd. More from The Hollywood Reporter 'Awards Chatter' Live Pod: Sam Rockwell on That 'White Lotus' Monologue, 'Three Billboards' Award Season and Upcoming Martin McDonagh Reunion 'Wild Horse Nine' Newport Beach TV Fest: 'White Lotus' Star Sam Rockwell Set for TV Supporting Performance of the Year Award, Live 'Awards Chatter' Podcast Walton Goggins Waited Six Months (and Seven Hours) to Film That 'White Lotus' Scene While Rockwell ultimately landed the role, he admitted they 'never got to my scene' during filming. 'So they had to let me go because they didn't want to pay me for a week,' he said, adding that they just paid him for the day. 'They were like, we can't pay him a week for one line.' Imperioli was later cast for the role, but The White Lotus actor said, 'I still get residual checks for that even though I'm not in it.' This wasn't the only time Rockwell and Imperioli were cast in the same role. He also told host Josh Horowitz that he was later called to star in 1998's Celebrity, starring Kenneth Branagh, Judy Davis and Leonardo DiCaprio. 'I was part of DiCaprio's entourage and I had a few lines and they said, 'Woody [Allen, director] wants you to dye your hair bleach blonde.' And I said, 'I'm not dying my hair bleach blonde for like five lines. What are you crazy?' And they're like, 'Woody wants you to do it,' and I'm like, 'Well I'm not doing it.'' That's when production told him, ''Well Michael Imperioli was going to do it,' 'cause he had dropped out, and I was replacing Michael because Michael was going to do a little pilot called Sopranos,' he added before quipping, 'I heard it didn't go anywhere.' Rockwell ended up giving in: 'I said, 'All right, I'll dye my hair.' And I bleached my hair.' As for Imperioli, The Sopranos definitely did go somewhere, running for eight seasons and winning multiple Emmys. Amanda Seyfried recounts her six auditions for Wicked, says 'I barely had time, but I made it work'
Amanda Seyfried has once again spoken up about one of the hardest auditioning experiences she's been through, for a role she ultimately didn't get. Specifically, she spoke about the six unsuccessful auditions she did for the role of Glinda in 2024's Wicked. While she's recounted her audition experiences in the past, such as on Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused, she most recently brought them up during her appearance on Backstage's In the Envelope podcast. The episode where she discussed this aired on June 19. Even though she couldn't star in Wicked as she'd hoped, Amanda Seyfried has nonetheless had a prolific acting career. From her role as Sophie Sheridan in Mamma Mia and its sequel, to her acclaimed portrayal of Elizabeth Holmes in The Dropout, she has cemented her place as an actress to be reckoned with. Amanda Seyfried auditioned for 2024's Wicked six times Amanda Seyfried has a history of auditioning aggressively for her dream roles. She once did so six times for 2012's Les Miserables, and she matched that record when trying out for the role of Glinda in 2024's Wicked. The 2024 Wicked film is an adaptation of a stage musical that first ran on Broadway in 2003. The stage musical itself is based on the 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West authored by Gregory Maguire. The characters of the novel, musical and film originate from L. Frank Baum's classic children's book The Wizard of Oz, which was first published in 1900 and is now in the public domain. Amanda Seyfried auditioned for the role of Galinda Upland, a well-to-do and popular young woman who becomes the envy of the ostracized Elphaba. While Elphaba goes on to become the Wicked Witch of the West, Galinda in turn becomes Glinda the Good. In the 2024 film, Glinda's role went to Ariana Grande. Amanda admitted to pushing herself and being very competitive Speaking to the In the Envelope podcast, Amanda said that she really put her all into auditioning for Wicked despite her busy schedule, saying: 'I was busy. I barely had time to do it, but I made it work. I worked my ass off for years and years and years on that music." She admitted to having a competitive streak but believed that it was a healthy sort of competition she had with herself. Even though she didn't get the part, Amanda did earn the opportunity to sing with Cynthia Erivo, who plays the Wicked Witch, during her auditions. As she said to Josh Horowitz on Happy Sad Confused, that was a worthy moment in and of itself, and she has no regrets about not getting the role.

Denis Villeneuve once said he'd 'deeply love' to make a James Bond movie. Amazon just hired him — and 007 fans seem to approve.
James Bond fans, rejoice. Amazon has picked Denis Villeneuve to direct the first 007 movie since it bought Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer for $8.5 billion in 2022. The idea of a new take on the character is a daunting prospect after Daniel Craig's 15-year tenure ended with " No Time to Die." The 2021 film ends as 007 goes out in a sacrificial blaze of glory to save his partner Madeleine Swann (Lea Seydoux) and their daughter Mathilde (Lisa-Dorah Sonnet). Now, Amazon is working on rebooting the James Bond franchise, a prospect that's worried fans since the MGM acquisition. Many joked that the streamer would Marvel-ize the property with spinoffs about characters such as Moneypenny, Q, or M. I can see it now. Q and M prequels, a Miss Moneypenny spinoff and a Blofeld series depicting him as an anti-hero — LifeMi (@LifeMi1987) February 20, 2025 However, Amazon announced on Wednesday that Villeneuve had signed on to direct the next film in the series. His wife, Tanya LaPointe, has also joined the project as an executive producer. Villeneuve said in a press release: "Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since 'Dr. No' with Sean Connery. I'm a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he's sacred territory. I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor." It's something of a dream come true for Villeneuve, who told the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast in 2021 he "would deeply love to one day make a James Bond movie," before calling it a "big challenge to reboot after what Daniel did." Villeneuve's movies including " Arrival," "Blade Runner 2049," and " Dune" have won 11 Oscars from 33 nominations, and many are taking this as a sign that Amazon is approaching "James Bond" seriously by working with an auteur. Fans on X pointed to Villeneuve's 2015 crime thriller "Sicario" as a sign that the director is the right choice for Bond. The director behind the Sicario border scene getting to make the next phase of James Bond is incredible stuff. It almost doesn't matter who they cast as Bond, they're going to be in good hands. And I'd argue the 1st films were the best for the last two runs (GoldenEye and Casino… — Scott Kacsmar (@ScottKacsmar) June 26, 2025 The person who directed this will be directing new James Bond. Denis Villeneuve — The Cinéprism (@TheCineprism) June 26, 2025 If Denis Villeneuve does anything like this with the next James Bond movie, we're in for a treat. — The Sting (@TheStingisBack) June 26, 2025 "Sicario" follows an FBI agent who joins a ruthless CIA task force whose goal is to dismantle a violent drug cartel in Mexico, and it has a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It's worth noting that the new "James Bond" project does not have a screenwriter attached yet, and it isn't clear if Villeneuve already has a story in mind. The director is preparing to start shooting " Dune: Part Three" later this year, so it could be some time before the next version of Bond gets into production. Amazon's willingness to wait for Villeneuve suggests the studio is willing to wait rather than rush out a new 007.
