McQualter claims bitter losses won't deter Reid from staying

West Coast coach Andrew McQualter has shot down suggestions disappointing defeats such as the 49-point belting at the hands of fellow battlers Richmond will deter star Harley Reid from staying at the Eagles. Reid was at his influential best in the first half with 20 disposals, five inside 50s and six clearances before the Tigers sent Jack Ross to curb the No.1 draftees' influence. The 20-year-old went forward in the last quarter to kick two of their three goals for the term, but his teammates couldn't replicate his impact in the middle as they were blown away in an eight goal to one third term. Reid is out of contract at the end of next year and is yet to accept a range of extensions on the table from West Coast as Victorian clubs still hold out hope of luring him back east. Asked if continued heavy defeats would deter Reid from remaining at the Eagles, McQualter said: 'I think if you see Harley, the way he's invested — he's absolutely in and he's a competitor. 'He's wanting to do everything to get this club out of this position. 'Nobody likes losing, I appreciate that part of it. We're all sick to death of it to be honest, but we're the only people that can change that. It's the people inside the four walls that can get us out of here and we have to do it together.' McQualter praised Reid heavily for his game, saying he was 'by far our best player tonight'. Harley Reid of the Eagles celebrates a goal. He was inspirational to his teammates, I loved the way he went about it,' he said. 'We're aware we've got a 20-year-old carrying our midfield. It's not an easy position for him. We're need to help; we're going to work hard to give him help. 'We did a few things in the last quarter to give him a couple of different looks and he's fighting his way through.' West Coast are now all but destined to claim a third wooden spoon in their history and could finish with only one win for the season for the first time in their history. 'We're seeing a team and a group, they're trying, they're working hard but they're clearly just in such a void of confidence,' McQualter said. Harley Reid of the Eagles looks dejected after the loss. 'It's a tricky position that we're in that we're showing signs, we're getting better and we're playing some good football but we're not getting rewarded for that on the scoreboard which is ultimately what we play for and what we're judged on.'

Tigers find answer to Reid rampage in win over Eagles

Richmond's belated decision to put the clamps on Harley Reid has paid massive dividends as the Tigers produced their best quarter of the season on the way to a 49-point win over West Coast at Optus Stadium. Reid ran riot during the first half of Saturday night's match, tallying 20 disposals and six clearances to ensure the Eagles trailed by just nine points at the long break. But when Jack Ross was sent to Reid as a hard tag for the start of the third quarter, it proved to be the end for West Coast. Reid tallied just four disposals for the term as Richmond piled on eight goals to one for the quarter on the way to the 16.9 (105) to 8.8 (56) win in front of a 44,252-strong crowd. Tim Taranto finished with three goals and seven clearances from 30 disposals for Richmond, while Jacob Hopper (33 disposals, nine clearances two goals) also enjoyed a big night. Reid had 27 disposals and six clearances to go with two final-quarter goals when he was shifted into attack, while Liam Duggan (31 disposals) battled hard in an overwhelmed defence. Richmond's fifth win of the season means the Eagles (1-17) are now all-but guaranteed to collect the wooden spoon. West Coast dominated territory in the opening term, but it was Richmond who nailed the key moments to take a five-point lead into the first break. The highlight belonged to Tigers speedster Maurice Rioli, who produced the chase down tackle of the year when he made up a 10m deficit to run down Brady Hough as the Eagles midfielder was taking his third bounce. MAURICE RIOLI WHAT A TACKLE 🌟#AFLEaglesTigers — AFL (@AFL) July 19, 2025 Rioli's moment of magic, which was even better than Tom Liberatore's effort to chase down St Kilda speedster Brad Hill in April, set up Taranto for the first of his two goals for the quarter. "You could see him coming from a mile away," Richmond coach Adem Yze said of the Rioli's tackle. "What it does is create spirit and energy for our boys. I'm really proud of him." Just to prove he was no one-trick pony, Rioli produced another memorable moment in the second term by diving full length to smother Harry Edwards, jumping to his feet to toe poke the ball forward before delivering a pin-point pass to Toby Nankervis in the goal square. The crowd was left incensed when Reid was pushed into a seated security guard by Seth Campbell. Reid took the harsh treatment in his stride, giving the security guard a high-five before collecting the ball to take his free kick. With Reid firing in the midfield, West Coast looked every chance of pulling off their second win of the season. But their midfield became road kill once Reid was tagged out of the contest in the third quarter, with the Tigers piling on an avalanche of goals in what became their best term for the season to date. We've got your back: Eagles vow to protect Harley Reid

Richmond beware - West Coast players will have Harley Reid's back if the Tigers attempt to go after the young Eagles star in Saturday night's cellar-dweller clash at Optus Stadium. Reid produced his best display of the season in last week's 26-point loss to Port Adelaide, tallying a team-high 27 disposals and six clearances to go with a goal. But the performance didn't come without controversy, with Reid fined $6250 for a kick-trip on Travis Boak that Essendon legend James Hird said deserved to be a three or four-week suspension. Reid's heated battle with Port star Jason Horne-Francis was also a big talking point. The young Eagle reportedly sledged the Port star with words to the effect of "go back to mummy, you left after one year", in reference to Horne-Francis lasting just one season at North Melbourne before seeking a trade back to his home state of South Australia. It came a week after Reid was physically targeted by GWS players during his heated battle with star Giants midfielder Tom Green. Young Eagles midfielder Clay Hall said he and his teammates would have Reid's back in Saturday's clash with Richmond. "That's something I'd love to do for someone who is a fellow draftee of mine," Hall said. "We're the same age, and to watch how much he cops it on the field and then off the field as well in terms of media, it's a little bit unfair at times. "So we'll support him as much as we can. He's one of my best mates around the club." Reid has given away a whopping 52 free kicks across 17 games this season, and he has now been fined 13 times so far in his 37-game career, as well as copping a two-week ban for a dangerous tackle last year. West Coast coach Andrew McQualter is doing his best to encourage Reid to maintain his intense competitiveness while playing within the rules. "Me and his coaches and his teammates, we all talk to him and we're all working really hard behind closed doors," McQualter said. "We're not playing everything out publicly with Harley. "I know there have been some things that have been a bit of a distraction and take away a little bit from his game, and we acknowledge that, and he acknowledged that last week. "But he's actually playing some pretty strong football at the moment." If West Coast (1-16) are any hope to avoid the wooden spoon, they simply must defeat 17th-placed Richmond (4-13). The Eagles have recalled midfielder Tim Kelly following his one-week stint in the WAFL, while Liam Ryan and Jack Petruccelle are the other inclusions, with Elijah Hewett rested. AFL 2025: West Coast Eagles coach Andrew McQualter on Harley Reid's second-year heat

West Coast Eagles coach Andrew McQualter says the best of Harley Reid will be forged out of his difficult second season. Reid stole headlines again on Sunday as he engaged in a fierce battle with fellow No.1 pick Jason Horne-Francis. The high-profile Eagle played one of his better games of the year, but it was overshadowed by further lapses of judgment. He was issued his 13th fine that sparked further criticism of his 'childish' behaviour. But McQualter is confident in Reid's growth, especially after he led one of the huddles at the end of a quarter on Sunday. 'I have no doubt he's going to be a better player given what he's been through this year,' McQualter said. 'It's been a challenging year for him and us, and he's a young man who is really driven to help this group move forward. 'He's in a good spot working hard on his game and he'll be better for it.' McQualter said Reid embodied the Eagles in missing the impact of inside midfielder Elliot Yeo. Yeo has missed the entire season with an ankle and knee issue and is racing against the clock to play this season. 'What 'Yeoy' did for Harley last year, we just haven't had him this year,' McQualter said. '(Yeo) is an incredibly experienced contest beast and takes a bit of the pressure off Harley in that space for sure. 'So we've missed 'Yeoy' without question and I think Tim (Kelly) can help in that space, for sure, just like Jack (Graham) has throughout this year. 'We're not playing everything out publicly with Harley, but I think you've got to remember his last six or eight weeks have been pretty strong. 'I know there's been some things that have been a bit of a distraction and take away a little bit from his game and we acknowledge that, and he acknowledged that last week, but he's actually playing some pretty strong football at the moment.'
