Why Huawei's new laptop is being regarded as evidence of how America's 'China ban' is hurting one of the biggest Chinese company

FILE (AP Photo/Andy Wong, File) Huawei Technologies new MateBook Fold relies on a 7-nanometer chip made by Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC), using technology from years ago, indicating that U.S. sanctions continue to hinder China's progress in advanced semiconductor development, Bloomberg reported, citing Canada-based consultancy TechInsights. This chip uses the same 7nm process as Huawei's Mate 60 Pro, which surprised U.S. officials in 2023. In contrast, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. is set to mass-produce 2nm chips, three generations ahead, later this year. The foldable notebook-tablet hybrid, launched in May, runs on Huawei's HarmonyOS and reflects Beijing's push for tech self-reliance amid U.S.-led restrictions, Bloomberg noted. However, China struggles to access cutting-edge chipmaking tools, as ASML Holding NV is barred from selling advanced lithography machines to Chinese firms. TechInsights stated, 'This likely means that SMIC has not yet achieved a 5nm-equivalent node that can be produced at scale,' highlighting the impact of U.S. technology controls on SMIC's ability to compete with leading foundries. America's China threat and fear The US sees China as a key rival in the field of artificial intelligence. The rise of DeepSeek earlier this year sending shock waves across US technology companies and wiping billions from their valuation. In addition to efforts to prevent China from securing advanced semiconductor manufacturing equipment, Washington is blocking Chinese companies from acquiring Nvidia's high-end AI chips for training, citing national security concerns. Beijing, on its part, is now pinning its hopes on Huawei and SMIC when it comes to advanced chipmaking. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play Chess on Your PC, Free Play Classic Chess Install Now Undo Despite Huawei's 2023 debut of a China-made 7nm chip, progress has stalled, with U.S. export controls limiting Huawei to producing only 200,000 Ascend AI chips in 2025, according to U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce Jeffrey Kessler, Bloomberg reported. Washington views China as a rival in AI, especially after DeepSeek's global emergence in 2025, and continues to block access to Nvidia's high-end AI chips. Huawei's founder Ren Zhengfei, in an interview with People's Daily, downplayed U.S. curbs, suggesting techniques like chip stacking could mimic advanced semiconductor results. Huawei opens HarmonyOS 6 to developers, unveils AI agents and cloud architecture updates

Huawei Technologies has unveiled the latest version of its proprietary operating system (OS), HarmonyOS 6, new artificial intelligence (AI) models and its CloudMatrix 384 AI rack architecture, as the Chinese technology giant accelerates efforts to build out its in-house software ecosystem in the face of ongoing US sanctions. The company introduced a beta version of HarmonyOS 6 at its annual developer conference on Friday, highlighting new features such as AI agents. Richard Yu Chengdong, chairman of Huawei's consumer business group, said the update was now available to developers, but did not specify a launch date for consumers. Huawei has installed HarmonyOS 5 on more than 40 device models, with over 8 million developers registered in its ecosystem and more than 30,000 apps and 'atomic services' – mini programs that run without installation – now available, according to Yu. Still, he acknowledged that HarmonyOS trails Apple 's iOS and Google 's open-source Android in terms of global reach and app support. 'But the top 5,000 apps accounted for 99.9 per cent of consumer time spent' on Huawei devices, he said. The company also announced the HarmonyOS Agent Framework, a toolkit that will allow developers to create AI agents – programs that can perform tasks on behalf of users – without the need to build or train foundation models. More than 50 AI agents, including those from Chinese microblogging platform Weibo and audio platform Ximalaya, would be available when HarmonyOS 6 launches publicly, according to Huawei. The latest family of its AI models include a natural language processing model with 718 billion parameters and a computer vision model with 15 billion parameters. Parameters are a machine-learning term for variables present in an AI system during training.

Huawei unveils HarmonyOS 6 with new AI agent framework, Dev Beta now out

Huawei kicked off its Developer Conference today, and Executive Director Richard Yu took the stage to unveil HarmonyOS 6 - Huawei's next major launch of the in-house software. HarmonyOS 6 brings the usual design polish, tweaks, and improvements, but the OS' most important new feature is the new Intelligent Agent Framework. It aims to bring more human-like and natural interaction between you and HarmonyOS 6's new personal assistant - XiaoYi. The aim here is for the OS to intuitively understand what you want and respond depending on it, instead of relying on simple voice prompts. XiaoYi supports scanning your entire smartphone screen to give you results, similar to Circle to Search. On stage, Huawei showed off HarmonyOS 6's AI framework in action - you can talk to ChatExcel to handle your Excel needs, ask XiaoYi to help you with making apps for HarmonyOS 6, etc. A neat feature of HarmonyOS 6 is Touch and Share. It works between eligible PCs and smartphones (no word yet on which those are but they could be Huawei-exclusive) and allows you to send multiple files, or connect to a game with your friends by simply tapping the phone to the computer's screen. The HarmonyOS 6 Developer Beta Program is now live, and developers can sign up until June 30. Devs need to complete verification with Huawei's Developer Alliance to enroll. The supported devices are the Huawei Mate 70 and 70 Pro, the Mate 60 and 60 Pro, the Mate X5, and the MatePad Pro 11-inch (2024) and MatePad Pro 13.2 (2025). Source | Via 1 | Via 2

Huawei's HarmonyOS gains traction in China with 103 million smartphones shipped

Huawei Technologies has shipped more than 103 million smartphones and 21 million tablets running its proprietary HarmonyOS operating system, with nearly half delivered in 2024, according to consultancy Canalys. The Shenzhen-based technology giant shipped 46 million smartphones and 10.5 million tablets last year, signalling an accelerating pivot to its in-house operating system, serving as an alternative to Google 's Android amid US sanctions. Huawei has been transitioning its devices to its own OS since 2021, ramping up efforts after Washington placed the company on its Entity List in 2019 over national security concerns. The privately held firm has since expanded HarmonyOS beyond smartphones and tablets, launching two laptops running on the system last month. Huawei made the move two months after its licence to use Microsoft Windows expired. The expiration cut the company off from the operating system that runs on roughly 70 per cent of personal computers (PCs) globally and 80 per cent in China, according to analytics service Statcounter. In a research note, Canalys analyst Emma Xu described Huawei's HarmonyOS-powered PC launch as a 'leap amid global tech restrictions', as the Chinese company makes a 'strategic pivot toward platform autonomy and technological sovereignty'. It is a 'watershed moment in its long-term goal to establish a fully self-sufficient hardware-software stack', Xu added.

China's Huawei launches laptops that run on original operating system

Chinese telecom equipment maker Huawei on Friday released laptop computers that run on its original operating system called Harmony. The company's previous models ran on US tech giant Microsoft's Windows operating system. The Chinese maker had been developing its own OS as the United States restricts Huawei from accessing US technology. Harmony has already been mounted on Huawei's smartphones. The company says using Harmony OS makes it easier for users to share files and data. A customer who came to buy a new laptop says he likes the Huawei brand, and it does not matter which operating system a computer runs on. Attention is on whether Huawei can expand its share in the computer OS market in China, which has been dominated by Microsoft and another US giant Apple. Huawei is one of the Chinese tech companies that have been stepping up efforts to develop advanced technologies in the face of US restrictions. Another smartphone maker, Xiaomi, released new models in May said to be embedded with its original advanced semiconductor.
