Why recent Spurs draft pick isn't interested in a Summer League break out

The post Why recent Spurs draft pick isn't interested in a Summer League break out appeared first on ClutchPoints. Given that they picked late in the first round of the NBA Draft annually for decades and that several second-rounders were vital to their championship teams, the San Antonio Spurs hope that Harrison Ingram could become a contributor. The 48th overall selection in the 2024 NBA Draft is playing in the Summer League for a second straight offseason. Advertisement 'For me, they're very clear as far as what they want in players and what they need for the team,' Ingram said following the Silver and Black's second game of the California Classic. Ingram scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds total in just 17 minutes of action thus far. It's not statistical production, though, that the former North Carolina Tar Heel is focused on. 'I just want to play my game. I'm not an iso guy, I'm not a hesi guy,' Ingram continued, referencing the on-the-court move known as hesitation. 'I'm a get rebounds, hustle, and make open threes, get steals, be in the right place, be at the right time guy. And I'll play as hard as I can. I'm going to do the best I can at that.' Harrison Ingram opens up about Spurs Summer League Though he's been in the Alamo City often since last summer, Ingram spent much of his rookie season with the G League affiliate Austin Spurs. Advertisement 'I was in San Antonio all year, training and trying to get better. Working my body, working on shooting, and always getting better every day.' More recently, the 6-foot-5 forward is dealing with a minor groin injury. 'It happened, like, two weeks ago, playing one-on-one. It was nothing serious. It was a minor, minor strain, but they're just playing it safe, so I never miss really any days,' Ingram revealed. 'They didn't want me to play a full game, especially on a back-to-back, but I fought for it. Got to one half, so I think I'll be back next game for the full game.' In their most recent contest, the Spurs got their first win of the summer, 90-88 vs. the Golden State Warriors. Because of the injury limitations, Ingram didn't play down the stretch. Advertisement 'It's tough, it's tough. But I trust their decision-making,' Ingram noted. 'I trust the training and performance team to make the right decision. But, as a hooper, I always wanna play, so it's tough.' All in all, it's a world of difference from Ingram, who never settled into the San Antonio Spurs rotation in his first year. 'I think just my composure and the game has slowed down so much. I was drawing fouls that I just wouldn't have even seen last year, and with my 3-point shot, I feel a lot more confident shooting off the dribble,' the 22-year-old says of this summer. 'It really is my knowledge of the game, playing in Austin a lot this year. Got the ball a lot and then going back and forth. I got to learn from guys like HB [Spurs forward Harrison Barnes],' the Dallas native continued. 'And all the vets we had on our team, and seeing how they work out, seeing how they train. Advertisement 'I feel like my game has just grown so much since college.' Ingram and the Spurs now look forward to that next step. San Antonio Spurs Have Tough Pill to Swallow After Two Summer League Games

San Antonio Spurs Have Tough Pill to Swallow After Two Summer League Games originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It's the dog days of the NBA calendar, which means it's time to overreact to the Summer League. However, second-year forward Harrison Ingram is no stranger to professional basketball and was expected to be one of the best players on the San Antonio Spurs' summer roster. Advertisement He's been just fine, but "just fine" in the summer doesn't scream "NBA success." In two Summer League games, he has scored a total of 11 points and nabbed 11 rebounds. At 6-5 and 230 pounds, he has the physicality to create space on the glass and defend well, although he looks like a good college player: not fast enough for the NBA. Ingram, on a two-way contract last season, did not crack the Spurs' rotation, and in Austin averaged only 12.8 points. Granted, he posted 9.3 rebounds and played solid defense, but at 22 years old, he is already close to his ceiling. When the Spurs drafted him 48th overall last season, they obviously saw some potential, but fans of the franchise that drafted Manu Ginobili might not fully grasp how rare it is for second-round picks to make it in the NBA. Advertisement Ingram will likely play a slightly bigger role next season and will stay on a two-way deal, although the clock is ticking, and the limited Summer League sample so far suggests that Ingram will not be a rotational player in San Antonio any time soon. San Antonio Spurs Rookie Finds 'Older Brother' in Unconventional Veteran Leader

San Antonio Spurs Rookie Finds 'Older Brother' in Unconventional Veteran Leader originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The San Antonio Spurs have no shortage of all-time greats for their young players to pick over. Advertisement Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker, and Gregg Popovich all make themselves available for young players to learn from, which is one of the reasons why "Spurs Culture" has persisted long after those legends retired. However, with Duncan, Pop, and the others around, reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle has decided that he wants to join those ranks, putting himself in a position to teach his newest teammates. "He has taken great strides," said summer league coach Mike Noyes of Castle. "He's a part of our future for the long haul." Castle is not on the summer league roster, as expected, since he has firmly proven that he already belongs in the NBA, although he is practicing with the team in order to get live playing time throughout the summer. Advertisement "For him to be here, even though he knows he's not playing, it just speaks to his character," Noyes praised. "He's a competitor." While Noyes appreciates having a player in the gym who has been there before, the rookies know that Castle can be a resource. "I think the biggest thing for me, I'm just trying to be a sponge, whether that's talking to Steph, talking to Harrison [Ingram], talking to all these guys, just being around these dudes, asking questions from the coaching staff as well, just being engaged in everything," summed up rookie Carter Bryant, who is expeted to have a massive role on the summer league team. Advertisement Bryant and Dylan Harper are longtime friends and rivals and are excited to share the court together in the NBA, but Bryant's relationship with Castle is just as strong and was described as brotherly. "I've known Steph for two and a half, three years now," revealed Bryant. "And I mean, he's always been like an older brother to me. He's always took me under his wing, gave me knowledge, whether that was throughout his rookie season or before when I was going into college or whatever the case may be." Both Bryant and Castle have made it clear that they take ultimate pride in their defense, and the two are expected to work together to help the 14th overall pick play a key rotational role this season, even after a limited role in his lone college season at Arizona. San Antonio Spurs Make Free Agency Decision on Two Young Players, Fan Favorite

San Antonio Spurs Make Free Agency Decision on Two Young Players, Fan Favorite originally appeared on Athlon Sports. NBA free agency is set to start on Monday, June 30, although before that, teams can negotiate and sign players who are currently under contract to extensions and new deals. The San Antonio Spurs reached a decision on three of their free agents, including fan favorite Sandro Mamukelashvili. Advertisement The Spurs tendered offers to free agents Riley Minix and Harrison Ingram, who spent the vast majority of last season on two-way deals. Minix went undrafted last summer, and the Spurs selected Ingram 48th overall in 2024. That means the Spurs have the right of first refusal and can match any offer they receive from another team. Ingram played in five games for the Spurs last season, and Minix played in only one, although both excelled in the G League. Ingram posted 12.2 points and 8.9 rebounds, and Minix averaged 19.3 points while shooting 42 percent from deep. Both are expected to join the Summer League roster alongside rookies Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant. Advertisement Mamukelashvili, on the other hand, was not made an offer. The Spurs can still sign him, although he will be an unrestricted free agent. In his third season with the Spurs, Mamu averaged 6.3 points, highlighted by a 30-point outing in a win over the New York Knicks. There have been some rumors suggesting that Mamukelashvili is being persued by teams in the Greek League, and if he is offered more money and playing time, no one can blame him for leaving the NBA, although as a solid third-string forward and center who seems to be a positive presence in the locker room, expect him to have his fair share of suitors this summer.
