Rajkot advocates ask for appointment of new district govt pleader, AGPs
Rajkot: A delegation of senior advocates from Rajkot met Gujarat minister of state for home Harsh Sanghavi during his visit to the city, demanding the appointment of a new district govt pleader and expedited appointments of assistant govt pleaders (AGPs). Dilip Patel, senior advocate and co-chairman of the Bar Council of India, said, "The current district govt pleader has been holding the post for eight years and has passed retirement age. 185 displaced persons granted Indian citizenship under CAA in Gujarat
After years of uncertainty, 185 displaced persons from Pakistan were granted Indian citizenship under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019. The recipients, many of whom have been residing in Gujarat's Rajkot, Morbi, and Kutch districts for several years, were handed over citizenship documents at an event in Rajkot. 'You are now citizens of the great nation - India,' Gujarat Minister of State for Home Affairs Harsh Sanghavi told the gathering. The announcement was met with chants of 'Bharat mata ki jai (Victory to mother India)' from the audience, with several recipients becoming emotional as they received their certificates. The beneficiaries included men, women, and children who migrated from Pakistan citing religious persecution and lack of security. Many belong to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, and Buddhist communities - groups recognised under the CAA as eligible for naturalisation. Among those granted citizenship was a young woman doctor who had completed her medical education in Pakistan. 'Just as she was about to begin her career, her family was forced to flee the country,' Mr. Sanghavi said. 'After years of waiting in India without legal status, she now holds official Indian citizenship,' he said. Mr. Sanghavi added that she was just one example of the many lives impacted by the law. Other beneficiaries included daily wage earners, homemakers, and elderly persons who had lived without formal citizenship for several years. Mr. Sanghavi said the Government of India is committed to supporting those who have suffered due to religious discrimination in neighbouring countries. 'This is not just the distribution of a certificate - it is the return of dignity, safety, and rights,' he said. He added that India, guided by the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the world is one family), respects all religions and safeguards the rights of the vulnerable. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for the implementation of the CAA, calling it a step that has saved lives and restored identity to many. Mr. Sanghavi also directed local officials to facilitate the integration of the new citizens into government systems and ensure their access to schemes related to education, healthcare, housing, and livelihood. 'From today, your children will grow up with access to the same opportunities as any other Indian citizen,' he told them. Several beneficiaries expressed gratitude after receiving their citizenship certificates. 'From today, I am part of India. I feel safe. I feel recognised,' said Asha Ben Becharbhai, a resident of Rajkot. Bhavna Ben Maheshwari, who has lived in Rajkot for the past 10 years and has been working for the past eight, said, 'Now I can say without hesitation - I am an Indian citizen. I thank the government for supporting us.'

GRSA's 5-year plan aims to reduce deaths on roads by 50%
Gandhinagar: The Gujarat Road Safety Authority (GRSA), which met in Gandhinagar last week, presented a five-year road safety plan, aiming to reduce road accident fatalities by 50% by 2030 through the combined efforts of police, RTO and other departments like the health and education. State transport minister Harsh Sanghavi had said at the meeting that a majority of fatal accidents occur because drivers do not wear helmets. To reduce fatalities, state-wide efforts will be made to educate citizens about the importance of helmets to save lives. The minister also suggested installing rumble strips on major highways to reduce accidents, as adopted in metro cities globally. In another important development, following guidelines issued by the Union govt, the Cashless Treatment Assistance Scheme will soon be implemented in the state, providing accident victims with free treatment up to Rs 1.5 lakh. This scheme aims to save lives by providing treatment during the golden hour. The govt will empanel various hospitals for this purpose, and treatment costs will be directly credited to the hospital's account. tnn You Can Also Check: Ahmedabad AQI | Weather in Ahmedabad | Bank Holidays in Ahmedabad | Public Holidays in Ahmedabad

Filed e-plaint? Visiting police station within 3 days is must
Ahmedabad: A new disclaimer uploaded on Gujarat Police's Citizen Portal has triggered concerns over its impact on the effectiveness and accessibility of digital policing. According to the disclaimer, no action will be taken on an online complaint if a complainant fails to physically visit the police station within three days of filing it. The clause — uploaded without any public announcement — contradicts the very principle of citizen-centric, technology-driven governance, sources said. The message on the website reads: "It is mandatory for the complainant to visit the police station for signing the complaint within three days after registering it. If the complainant does not visit the police station within three days, no action will be taken on such complaint. " It has left people and experts divided. Sources said that this move could mar the govt's vision on enhanced public convenience. In 2022, the minister of State for home, Harsh Sanghavi, while promoting the online complaint facility as a cornerstone of modern policing, had asserted that filing basic complaints like theft of a phone or car should not require physical presence at a police station. They added that it's ironical that policemen visit a passport applicant's residence for verification, but this onus falls on a complainant who has notified an offence online. There has been no explanation from the home department on norm. Advocate Jayendra Abhavekar called the new diktat unconstitutional. "Govt or police cannot fix the timeline or deadline for a complainant to lodge a complaint. If a person is unwell, elderly, or unaware of the police station, then how can his rights for filing a complaint be refused?" asked Abhavekar. Utkarsh Dave, a high court lawyer, defended police action, saying if a complainant is not present, then how would the probe proceed?

More than 200 Air India plane crash victims identified
Policemen carry the coffin of former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani, who died in the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad. (AP pic) AHMEDABAD : More than 200 victims of the Air India jet crash have been identified through DNA testing, Indian authorities said Wednesday, inching towards ending an agonising wait for relatives. There was one survivor out of 242 passengers and crew on board the London-bound plane on Thursday when it slammed into a residential area of Ahmedabad, killing at least 38 people on the ground. Distraught relatives have been providing DNA samples to help identify their loved ones, in a painstakingly slow process. 'As of 2pm, 202 DNA (samples) have been matched,' Harsh Sanghavi, home minister of Ahmedabad's Gujarat state, wrote on X. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner erupted into a fireball when it crashed moments after takeoff, with witnesses reporting seeing badly burnt bodies and scattered remains. Indian authorities are yet to announce the cause of the crash and investigators from Britain and the US have joined the probe. Investigators are aiming to retrieve vital information from both black boxes recovered from the site – the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder. India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau upgraded a laboratory this year where black boxes can be analysed. Following the crash, the civil aviation regulator ordered inspections of Air India's Dreamliners. Initial checks on the fleet 'did not reveal any major safety concerns', the regulator said late Tuesday. 'The aircraft and associated maintenance systems were found to be compliant with existing safety standards,' it said.
